Does IFTTT have to be running to work? Usually, no: most Applets run through IFTTT’s connected services, so the phone app does not need to stay open. The key exception is certain Android phone-based triggers, which rely on IFTTT’s foreground service running in the background. Whether an Applet runs promptly also depends on how its trigger reaches IFTTT, and whether its connected accounts remain authorized.
What happens when an IFTTT Applet runs?
An Applet connects a Trigger—an event or changed data—to an Action, the work IFTTT starts in response. Some Applets also use Queries, filter code, delays, or multiple Actions. When those elements are present, IFTTT describes the order as Trigger, Queries, filter code, delay, then Actions. IFTTT’s Applet overview explains the basic structure.
For most Applets, the trigger comes from a connected service rather than continuous activity on your phone. The IFTTT app can be closed while IFTTT and the connected service handle the automation.

IFTTT integrations use either polling or real-time notifications. The service integration determines which method applies; users cannot switch an Applet between them with a setting.

| Trigger method | How IFTTT learns about an event | Documented timing |
|---|---|---|
| Polling | IFTTT checks the trigger service for new events on a schedule. | IFTTT’s Help Center, updated July 14, 2025, says polling checks run every five minutes on Pro and Pro+, and every hour on Free. These are check intervals, not a promise that the Action will finish within that time. Source |
| Real time | The trigger service notifies IFTTT when an event occurs. | IFTTT says these Applets normally run within a few seconds of the notification. An API or Action delay can still affect completion. Source |
To identify the method for a specific Applet, look in IFTTT’s activity feed. “Successful trigger checks” indicates polling; “Listening for trigger notifications” indicates real-time delivery. A polling Applet can seem inactive between checks even when it is working as designed.
When does the IFTTT app need to run on Android?
Some triggers depend on events detected on the Android phone itself. IFTTT says its Android foreground service is needed for reliable operation of many Applets using Android Device, Android Battery, Location, Group Location, Android SMS, and Android Phone Call triggers. The persistent notification indicates that this service is active. In this context, “running in the background” means a system-managed service—not keeping the IFTTT app screen open. IFTTT’s Android notification explanation describes the requirement.

Android version can also affect certain Actions. IFTTT says Android 14 and later restrict some activities started by background apps. Its Help Center identifies two Actions that may require a tap to continue: Android Device – Launch Google Maps Navigation and Android Device – Play music. This is specific to those Actions; it does not mean every Applet needs manual approval. See IFTTT’s Android 14 guidance.

What to check if an Applet is delayed or not running
- Check its trigger method. Open IFTTT’s activity feed and look for “Successful trigger checks” or “Listening for trigger notifications.” Use the polling interval for your plan to judge whether a check is due.
- Allow for a polling delay or timeout. A polling check can be delayed if the service API times out. IFTTT says a later successful check can find events since the previous successful check, so one failed check does not by itself prove an event was lost. This is not a guarantee that every third-party service retains every event. IFTTT explains skipped trigger events.
- Verify the connected service and account. An Applet can stop working if its service is removed, its authorization expires, or account credentials change. Reconnect the service; IFTTT says affected Applets should resume. If you changed accounts, update the Applet’s inputs if they point to a resource unavailable through the new account. See IFTTT’s service-disconnection guidance.
- For a local Android trigger, check background activity. Confirm Android is not restricting the IFTTT background service if the Applet uses one of the phone-based triggers covered above. For the two Android 14+ Actions named by IFTTT, be prepared to tap to continue.
- Check when the Applet was enabled. IFTTT Applets act on trigger events after activation; they do not backfill content or events from before you enabled the Applet. See the Applet overview.
