The online membership is sold separately. Nintendo also notes that online service availability varies by country and that its terms apply, so the service should be confirmed for the account’s region before purchase or setup.

How local split-screen works on one Switch 2
Local multiplayer is the couch-play option. Everyone plays on the same Nintendo Switch 2, with the game dividing the display into views for the participating drivers. Nintendo describes this mode as split-screen with friends and lists one-system support for up to four participants.
What to prepare
- One Nintendo Switch 2 console with the game installed.
- A compatible controller for every person who will drive. A single controller cannot serve multiple simultaneous players.
- A display and play position that let everyone see the shared screen comfortably. The game supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, but the practical viewing experience differs substantially between those arrangements.
If you are using extra Joy-Con or another controller configuration, check that each device is recognized by the console before opening the multiplayer session. Nintendo’s product information establishes the per-player controller requirement but does not prescribe a particular controller model, so compatibility depends on the devices and regionally available hardware you are using.
Starting a local session
- Connect or pair the controllers with the Switch 2 and assign one controller to each participant through the console’s controller setup screen.
- Launch HOT WHEELS Infinite Rush and open the game’s multiplayer or mode-selection area.
- Select the local, split-screen, or single-system option presented by the game. The exact on-screen wording can vary with the game’s release build and language settings.
- Have each driver join when prompted, then choose the available event or race settings.

The official store listing confirms the capability and player range, not a particular menu path or whether every event type uses the same local rules. If a mode does not accept the number of people you expected, follow the limitation shown in that mode rather than assuming the entire game has lost local support.

When local play is the better choice
Choose single-system play when everyone is in the same room, you want to avoid subscriptions and account checks, or you need a session that does not depend on an internet connection. It also gives the group one shared screen and one host console, which simplifies setup compared with coordinating separate systems.
How online multiplayer works
Online multiplayer is the networked option for players who are not sharing one console. Nintendo lists an online range of two to twelve players for this Switch 2 edition. That range describes the game’s advertised online capacity; it does not guarantee that every individual race, playlist, or event always fills all available places.
Requirements before inviting players
- Each participant needs access to the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
- Each participant needs internet access for the online features.
- Each participant needs a Nintendo Account.
- Nintendo requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. The membership is sold separately.
- The account and service must be in a country where Nintendo’s online service is available.
These are service requirements, not optional enhancements. A console can run the game’s single-player and local functions without an online membership, but an online session cannot be treated as a local session when the subscription or account requirement is missing.

Setting up an online session
- Confirm that every player is using a Switch 2 and has the game available on that system.
- Check the Nintendo Account on each console and verify that the account can access Nintendo Switch Online.
- Connect each console to the internet and complete any system or game update that the console requires before launching multiplayer.
- Open the game’s online multiplayer area and use the available join, invite, or matchmaking controls shown on screen.
- Wait for the session to show the intended players before starting the event.
Nintendo’s listing does not document the game’s invitation flow, matchmaking rules, voice-chat behavior, cross-save support, or connection-quality targets. Those details should not be assumed from the player-count label alone.

The most important compatibility warning is Nintendo’s wording that online play is “Available only between Nintendo Switch™ 2 users.” In practical terms, online participants must be using the Switch 2 edition on Switch 2 hardware. Do not treat the listing as confirmation of cross-play with the original Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or another platform.
This restriction applies to online participation, not to the basic fact that the game has local split-screen. A group in one room can use the single-system option without creating a cross-platform session; a remote group must satisfy Nintendo’s Switch 2-only condition.

Planning a mixed-hardware group
If some friends own another version or another console, verify their edition before arranging an online race. The official Switch 2 listing does not promise a bridge between systems, and the safe assumption is that a non-Switch-2 player cannot join this edition’s online session unless Nintendo later publishes different compatibility information.
Likewise, do not infer that ownership of a Switch 2 console automatically grants access to every platform edition, or that a Nintendo Switch Online membership removes the hardware restriction. The membership covers the service requirement; it does not change Nintendo’s stated platform eligibility.

Controller and console setup details
Nintendo UK’s product page states that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. That requirement applies to both the local arrangement, where several controllers are connected to one console, and the online arrangement, where each console still needs its own controller for the person playing.

Before the session, open the Switch 2 controller settings and confirm that every device appears as a separate player input. If two people are sharing one controller, the console may not expose the expected number of join slots. Reassign or pair the devices before entering the game rather than waiting until a race has begun.
For handheld or tabletop play, position the console so all local participants can see the display. A TV setup generally gives a group more room, while a tabletop setup may be practical for a smaller gathering. These are physical setup considerations, not separate multiplayer modes; Nintendo lists the game as supporting TV, tabletop, and handheld use.
What Nintendo’s listing confirms—and what it does not

- Whether other platform editions share any of the Switch 2 version’s multiplayer features.
Keeping these categories separate prevents a store specification from being mistaken for a promise about every mode or service behavior. Use the in-game instructions and Nintendo’s current support information for details that are not included in the listing.

The local player cannot join
- Return to the console’s controller settings and confirm that the controller is paired and assigned.
- Make sure each participant has a separate compatible controller.
- Re-enter the game’s local multiplayer screen after changing controller assignments.
- Check whether the selected event has its own participation limit.
The online option is unavailable
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet.
- Verify the Nintendo Account currently signed in on the console.
- Check that the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, which Nintendo identifies as a requirement.
- Confirm that every participant is using Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and the Switch 2 edition.
- Consider regional service availability, since Nintendo says online service is not available in every country.
A friend on another system cannot join
First check the hardware rather than changing router settings. Nintendo’s published condition is Switch 2 users only, so a player on the original Switch or a different platform is outside the compatibility described for this edition. The listing does not provide a cross-play workaround.
