Usually, no—not because of the higher resolution alone. A Sony Walkman can decode 24-bit files, high sample rates and native DSD, but controlled listening tests generally find the audible difference from CD-quality audio small, difficult to reproduce, or dependent on the listener and test conditions. The recording’s mastering, your headphones, the connection and the listening level usually matter more than a Hi-Res label.
You can still hear an improvement when a high-resolution release uses a better master, avoids an audible bottleneck, or is played through a revealing wired system. That improvement should not be assumed to come from 24-bit/96 kHz or DSD itself.
What “high-resolution” means on a Walkman
CD-quality PCM audio is 16-bit at 44.1 kHz. High-resolution audio generally means PCM with greater word length, such as 24-bit, and/or a higher sample rate, such as 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz. DSD is a different one-bit format that stores a very high-frequency stream rather than PCM samples. “Hi-Res” describes the file and the equipment’s capability; it does not describe the quality of the mastering.
A 24-bit/96 kHz file can contain more production headroom and bandwidth than a 16-bit/44.1 kHz file, which is useful during recording and mixing. During normal listening, however, the playback chain and human hearing determine whether that extra information reaches your ears as an audible difference.

What the evidence says you can hear
Double-blind DSD and high-resolution PCM comparison
An Audio Engineering Society paper titled “DVD-Audio versus SACD: Perceptual Discrimination of Digital Audio Coding Formats” used double-blind ABX tests to compare DSD with 24-bit/176.4 kHz PCM. The abstract reports that hardly any subjects made a reproducible distinction and concludes that no significant differences were audible in that test. This does not prove that every possible DSD and PCM recording sounds identical; it shows that a claimed format difference was not reliably detected under the study’s conditions.
Audibility of a CD-quality bottleneck
Another AES Journal report, “Audibility of a CD-Standard A/DA/A Loop Inserted into High-Resolution Audio Playback,” compared high-resolution playback with and without a 16-bit/44.1 kHz analogue-to-digital-to-analogue loop. Across the systems and listeners tested, the loop’s noise became audible only at very elevated levels. A normal CD-quality stage in a competent system therefore is not automatically an audible failure point.
The 2016 AES meta-analysis
A 2016 AES meta-analysis reviewed experiments that compared high-resolution audio with 16-bit/44.1 or 48 kHz audio. It found a small aggregate ability to discriminate the formats. Results changed with listener training, programme material, equipment and test design. The finding is probabilistic: some trained listeners may detect a difference in particular circumstances, but the evidence does not support promising an upgrade to every listener.

These studies also explain why casual demonstrations can be misleading. If the two files have different mastering, are played at different loudness, or are identified in advance, you may be hearing those variables rather than resolution.

Why the mastering often matters more
Mastering controls level, dynamics, equalisation, stereo balance and clipping. A carefully mastered 16-bit/44.1 kHz release can sound more natural than a harshly mastered 24-bit release. Conversely, a high-resolution download can sound better because it was prepared from a superior master, not because its sample rate is higher.
When comparing releases, use the same album edition and the same master whenever possible. A catalogue may contain a standard master, a remaster and a high-resolution edition with different peak levels. Without matching those variables, a louder or less-compressed version commonly wins the comparison even when the file resolution is irrelevant.
What Sony Walkman hardware can do
Sony’s support guidance says that every component in the system should be Hi-Res compatible to fully enjoy Hi-Resolution quality. That means the source file, player, digital processing, amplifier, headphones or speakers and, for wireless playback, the codec and receiving device all become part of the chain.

The NW-WM1AM2 is a premium dedicated player. Sony listed its US price as $1,399.99 when the information was retrieved; price and availability can change, so check the current product listing before buying. Its cost reflects the complete device—storage, battery, analogue output stage, construction and software—not a guaranteed audible benefit from high-resolution files.
Does Bluetooth cancel out Hi-Res?
Bluetooth changes the answer because the player must encode audio for wireless transmission and the receiving device must decode it. Sony states that ordinary Bluetooth speakers do not meet Hi-Res specifications because of bandwidth limitations. In practice, a standard Bluetooth connection cannot carry an untouched high-resolution stream from the Walkman.
Sony identifies LDAC as its higher-rate wireless option. The company describes transmission of up to 990 kbps, about three times the information rate of conventional Bluetooth audio. To use that mode, both the Walkman and the headphones or speaker must support LDAC, and the connection must remain stable enough for the selected quality setting. Other codecs, including aptX HD, AAC and SBC, may be available on compatible Walkman models, but each applies its own compression and bandwidth limits.

If your goal is the most controlled comparison, use a wired output with known-good headphones. If convenience is more important, identify the active codec in the Walkman and treat the wireless path as part of the test.

How to test your own Walkman fairly
A short, controlled comparison is more informative than switching files casually. Use music you know well and avoid changing several variables at once.
- Choose matching material. Obtain a CD-quality and a high-resolution version made from the same master. If the mastering is different, record that limitation rather than attributing the result to resolution.
- Use a wired baseline. Connect headphones or earphones you know are working correctly. A wired connection removes codec changes and wireless dropouts from the first test.
- Disable processing. For the baseline, turn off equaliser presets, DSEE or other enhancement modes, crossfeed and sound-field effects. Keep the Walkman’s volume and output mode unchanged.
- Match loudness. Adjust the files so peaks and average listening level are as close as you can make them. Even a small loudness advantage can bias a preference.
- Switch without changing the rest of the chain. Use the same headphones, track position, volume and player. Change only the file resolution.
- Use a blind or ABX method. Have another person identify the files, or use software that hides which version is playing. Note your choices over multiple trials rather than relying on one impressive passage.
- Repeat with several recordings. Try quiet acoustic material, dense mixes and recordings with natural ambience. A result on one album does not establish a universal format difference.
- Test wireless separately. If you use Bluetooth, confirm whether the connection is LDAC, aptX HD, AAC or SBC. Repeat the comparison only after the codec and its quality setting are known.
If you cannot identify the high-resolution file reliably, that is a valid result. If you can identify it only with one recording or after extensive training, describe the finding narrowly instead of treating it as a general improvement.

Headphones and earphones
The transducer, fit, seal and frequency response usually have a much larger audible effect than moving from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/96 kHz. A poor seal on an in-ear model can remove bass; a mismatched or damaged cable can create channel imbalance. Use a comfortable, properly fitted model before judging file formats.
Amplifier and output level
Headphones need sufficient voltage and current without audible clipping or noise. A Walkman’s S-Master HX stage is designed for high-quality digital amplification, but the practical result still depends on the headphone’s sensitivity and impedance. If the player reaches a comfortable level cleanly, a more expensive amplifier is not automatically an audible upgrade.

Noise, distortion and room conditions
Background noise masks low-level detail. Fans, traffic and conversation can make a subtle difference impossible to detect. For repeatable listening, use a quiet room and a consistent position. With speakers, room acoustics and placement dominate much of what you hear; a portable player’s file resolution cannot correct a poor room setup.
Digital processing and volume
Equalisation, replay gain, crossfade and resampling can alter the signal more than its nominal resolution. Keep settings documented. If you apply EQ for comfort, use the same settings for both files and leave enough digital headroom to prevent clipping.
When a high-resolution Walkman file is worthwhile
- You want a lossless library. FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless and DSD can preserve a preferred master without the data reduction used by lossy formats.
- The high-resolution release has the best master. The audible advantage may be the mastering, but the file can still be the most satisfying edition to own.
- You work with audio. Extra bit depth and sample rate provide useful production headroom, even though that does not imply a larger audible benefit during final playback.
- You have a compatible wired system. A capable Walkman and revealing headphones let you evaluate the file without a basic wireless bottleneck.
- You value format support and build quality. Native DSD, broad lossless support, battery life, storage and physical controls may justify a dedicated player independently of a resolution difference.
When the Hi-Res label is unlikely to matter
- The two releases use different mastering, so the comparison is not format-only.
- You listen through ordinary Bluetooth equipment that does not support a higher-rate codec.
- Your environment is noisy or your headphones do not fit consistently.
- The Walkman is applying different EQ, enhancement or volume settings to each file.
- You expect a dramatic change from a format distinction that controlled tests find small on average.
Is the Sony NW-WM1AM2 worth it for 24-bit or DSD music?
It can be worthwhile as a premium music player if you want native DSD playback, broad lossless-format support, a dedicated interface and Sony’s S-Master HX amplification in a portable device. Those are functional and ownership benefits.

Consider the complete system and your priorities before assigning value to the Hi-Res badge.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- Buy or keep high-resolution files when they provide a preferred master, lossless archival copy or a format you specifically need.
- Choose a Walkman for its hardware, controls, battery, storage, native format support and output quality—not for a promised universal resolution effect.
- Use wired headphones for critical comparisons and identify the codec whenever you listen wirelessly.
- Spend first on the weakest link: mastering, headphone fit, a quiet listening environment and a clean signal path generally offer more dependable gains.
