Short answer: Cross-save, cross-progression, and cross-play are not confirmed for Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling. The available Steam listing describes a single-player game, while Nintendo’s Switch listing specifies one player on one system. Nintendo does document Save Data Cloud backup for Switch subscribers, but that is a platform backup feature—not evidence that a save can move between Switch and Steam.
The game’s platform information is also still developing. Steam lists the release as coming soon for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, while Nintendo lists a Switch release date of January 21, 2027. Treat feature support as unannounced until the developer or a storefront explicitly adds it.
What the current listings actually say
Two official storefront records provide the clearest information currently available: the Steam page published by Humble Reeds and Nintendo’s product page for Switch. Neither advertises a shared save system, cross-progression, cross-platform multiplayer, or ownership transfer between storefronts.
Steam version
Steam categorizes Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling as an adventure, indie, and simulation title. Its feature label is single-player. The page includes a free demo and marks the full release as coming soon. It lists versions for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, but it does not publish a date that can be matched to Nintendo’s January 2027 date.

A single-player label tells you how the game is presented on Steam: the listing does not promise an online or local multiplayer mode. It does not, by itself, describe where save files are stored, whether they synchronize through an account, or whether a purchase on another platform unlocks the same copy.
Nintendo Switch version
Nintendo lists the Switch edition as published by Humble Reeds, with a January 21, 2027 release date. Its player information says one player on one system. Nintendo also displays the statement: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) is required for Save Data Cloud backup.”
That wording establishes a backup option for the Switch edition. It does not say that a Switch save can be imported into the Steam version, exported to a computer, or used by another storefront. The listing likewise does not advertise cross-play.

“Not stated” is important here. It means the product metadata does not make a commitment either way; it is not a technical declaration that a feature can never be added.

Cross-save, cross-progression, and cloud backup are different
These terms are often used interchangeably in store discussions, but they describe separate capabilities.
Cross-save
Cross-save means the same game progress can be used on two or more platforms. For example, a player might begin on a computer, open the game on Switch, and continue from the same story position. A genuine cross-save implementation normally requires a supported way to identify the player and transfer or synchronize the save. The current listings do not name such an account, synchronization service, or transfer process for this game.
Cross-progression
Cross-progression is the broader term for carrying progression between versions. It can include story chapters, unlocked abilities, inventory, settings, achievements, or other persistent data. Some games synchronize only selected progression, so a future announcement would need to explain exactly what transfers rather than merely using the phrase “cross-progression.” No such scope is published in the available metadata.

Save Data Cloud on Switch
Nintendo’s cloud-backup statement concerns the Switch copy of the save. A backup can help restore data on a compatible Switch environment, but it does not automatically create a shared save format for Windows, macOS, SteamOS/Linux, or another storefront. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is therefore a requirement for the listed backup service, not proof of cross-platform progression.

What the single-player labels mean for cross-play
Cross-play allows people using different platforms to join the same multiplayer session. It matters only when a game offers a multiplayer mode that needs to connect those platforms. Steam currently presents Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling as single-player, and Nintendo describes one player on one system. Neither record identifies co-op, competitive play, online sessions, local multiplayer, or a matchmaking service.
That combination gives buyers no documented cross-play use case today. It is still more accurate to say “not confirmed” than “impossible,” because store descriptions can change before release and a developer could announce a feature later. Until the metadata names a multiplayer mode and explains platform compatibility, do not purchase the game expecting to play its campaign with a friend on another system.
What this means for common buying scenarios
Starting on Steam and moving to Switch
There is no published procedure for moving a Steam save to Switch. A Steam purchase, demo save, or computer file should be treated as belonging to the Steam version unless Humble Reeds later documents an account link or import tool. The listed Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux versions show where the Steam build runs; they do not establish that those saves are readable by the Switch edition.
Starting on Switch and moving to Steam
The same limitation applies in the opposite direction. Nintendo’s cloud-backup language describes protection for the Switch save, not a download that can be opened by Steam. A Nintendo Switch Online membership should therefore be evaluated as a way to back up the Switch copy, not as a subscription that unlocks a PC version.

Playing with a friend on another platform
The current player labels do not identify a multiplayer mode. If playing together is your main reason to buy, wait for a listing or developer announcement that names online or local multiplayer and specifies supported platforms. A one-player listing should not be interpreted as a promise of cross-platform co-op.
Using several computers
Steam offers builds for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, but the listing does not state how saves synchronize among those computer operating systems. Do not assume that installing the game on two computers will merge progress. Check the final release notes for the save location, Steam synchronization behavior, and any account requirements before relying on a shared computer setup.
Why the release dates do not answer the feature question
Nintendo’s page gives a specific Switch date—January 21, 2027—whereas Steam says coming soon. This difference is a timing signal, not evidence of different gameplay features. It may reflect separate storefront scheduling, staggered launches, or an unfinished PC release date. It also means that one platform’s metadata may be updated before another’s.
Because the title had not reached a uniform release state in the listed records, feature information can still change. A later announcement could add a cross-save service, clarify that saves are local, or document multiplayer. Conversely, a store page may remain silent even after launch. The safest buying decision uses the most recent developer statement and the final platform documentation, not assumptions based on another game.

How to verify the status before you buy
- Read the feature labels on the exact edition. On Steam, look for changes to the single-player description and any newly added multiplayer or account requirements. On Nintendo’s page, check the player count and the wording around Save Data Cloud.
- Look for a named synchronization method. A meaningful cross-save announcement should identify the account, sign-in step, or transfer tool used to connect platforms. A generic reference to cloud backup is not enough.
- Check what data transfers. Confirm whether story progress, unlocks, inventory, settings, and achievements move together. If the announcement covers only one category, do not assume the rest follows.
- Confirm ownership rules. Cross-save does not necessarily mean one purchase grants every version. Storefront ownership, platform licensing, and any required subscriptions should be stated separately.
- Check multiplayer wording. For cross-play, verify that the game has an online or local multiplayer mode and that Switch and PC are explicitly included. “Single-player” and “one player on one system” do not provide that confirmation.
- Recheck after launch. The Steam page is currently marked coming soon, and the Switch date is future-dated in the listing. Read launch notes or a support article for the version you actually intend to use.
Questions a future announcement should answer
If Humble Reeds adds platform-sharing features, a useful announcement should answer practical questions rather than only using a feature name:
- Which platforms can share a save: Switch, Windows, macOS, SteamOS/Linux, or only some of them?
- Is a separate developer account required, and can one account be linked to multiple storefront purchases?
- Does synchronization happen automatically, manually, or through an export/import file?
- What happens when two devices have different progress, and can an older save be restored?
- Are demo saves compatible with the full game?
- Does Save Data Cloud remain a Switch-only backup even when another synchronization service exists?
- Does cross-play involve online servers, local wireless play, or both?
- Are multiplayer sessions supported between Switch and each computer operating system?
- Are platform-specific achievements, settings, or downloadable content excluded from transfer?
These details determine whether a feature is useful in practice. The phrase “cloud save” alone cannot answer them.
Practical advice by player type
If you want one uninterrupted save
Choose the platform on which you expect to spend most of your time and plan to keep that save there unless a documented transfer process appears. On Switch, Nintendo Switch Online can provide the listed Save Data Cloud backup; on Steam, wait for the final documentation to learn whether any synchronization is offered.
If you own both a computer and a Switch
Budget for the possibility that you will maintain separate saves and separate purchases. The current records do not promise that progress or ownership carries between the editions. Buying the second version for convenience is safest only after the developer explains portability.
If multiplayer is essential
Do not use the current store labels as a multiplayer guarantee. Wait for explicit confirmation of a multiplayer mode, supported platforms, and the connection method. The information presently published supports planning for a solo experience.
If you are considering the demo
Steam lists a free demo, but no compatibility statement says that demo progress transfers to the full game or to Switch. Treat the demo as a way to sample the Steam build unless a later update documents save carry-over.
Bottom line on cross-save and cross-play
The available official metadata supports a single-player, platform-specific reading of Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling. Steam lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux with a coming-soon release and a free demo; Nintendo lists a one-player Switch edition dated January 21, 2027 and notes that Nintendo Switch Online is required for Save Data Cloud backup. Neither listing promises cross-save, cross-progression, cross-play, or ownership transfer. Revisit the developer’s announcements and the final storefront pages before release if sharing progress or playing across platforms is a deciding factor.
