Yes. Gemini can use location to answer requests such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop?” It may use a general area inferred from your IP address or saved Home and Work details, precise device location when permitted, or location supplied by another Google service, including Google Maps. So turning off one precise-location permission does not necessarily prevent every Google service involved in a request from providing location.
The key distinction is between general location and precise device location. Gemini can use general location for relevant answers by default. Precise location is an additional source, but it is not the only way a request can be location-aware. Google also says another Google service can supply precise location for a Gemini request, even when precise location is off in the Google app.
What “using your location” means in Gemini
A request like “find a park near me” needs some idea of where “near me” is. Depending on the request and the services involved, Google says Gemini may rely on several sources:
- General area from your IP address: this can help provide locally relevant answers without being the same as precise device location.
- Saved Home or Work details: addresses stored in your Google Account can be relevant when asking for directions or recommendations from home or work.
- Precise device location: a device or browser can provide a more exact location when the relevant permission is granted.
- Location from another Google service: Google says Maps or another Google service may supply precise location to fulfill a request.
That last point matters when checking settings. Gemini’s visible location indicator or the Google app’s location permission describes a particular app’s access; neither necessarily accounts for every other service that might contribute location to a request. If your concern is precise location, review permissions for the services involved, not just one toggle.

What Gemini can do with Google Maps
Gemini can use public information from Google Maps to answer questions about businesses, stores, restaurants, parks and attractions. A response may include a place’s address, description, website, ratings or opening hours. Gemini can also provide directions based on a travel mode, use saved Home or Work locations for directions, and use device location with permission. A linked place result can be opened in Maps.
For example, you can ask, “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” or “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.” Such questions make location relevant; they do not necessarily mean the answer came from GPS. The source may be a general area, a saved address, permitted device location, or information provided by another Google service.
Requirements and availability
Google’s current Gemini help information says place searches and directions require you to be signed in and to have Keep Activity on. The Maps feature is unavailable in Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. Some expanded Maps features are being released gradually; Google lists eligibility limits for those features, including being at least 18, using a personal Google Account, and asking about a place in English. Availability may therefore differ by feature, account and rollout.

What the Maps connection does not support
Google lists four unsupported actions for Gemini’s Maps connection:
- Saving location history.
- Using saved places other than Home or Work.
- Providing live traffic updates.
- Adding a review.
These limits distinguish asking Gemini for place information or directions from managing a full Maps history or account. Do not treat a directions answer as a live traffic report, or assume that Gemini can use every saved place in Maps.
Check Gemini’s precise-location access on the web
- Open gemini.google.com and open the menu.
- Choose Settings & help.
- Look at the location indicator at the bottom of the menu. Google says blue means the Gemini web app has access to and is using precise location; gray means it is not.
- If you want Gemini on the web to use the device’s precise location, choose Update location and follow the browser’s permission prompt.
The indicator describes the Gemini web app’s own precise-location access and use. A gray indicator does not establish that no location is involved in a particular answer: general location may still be used, and another Google service may provide location. Conversely, a blue indicator is an indication of access and use, not a complete history of which location source shaped every response.

Check the Google app permission on Android
On Android, Gemini’s mobile assistant capabilities are hosted by the Google app and use that app’s location permission. To inspect the permission, open Android Settings, then go to Location → App location permissions → Google. Check the app’s location access and the Use precise location setting.

Labels and available choices can vary by Android version. Choose based on the access you are comfortable granting:
- Allow all the time grants the broadest ongoing access among these choices.
- Allow only while using the app limits access to periods when the app is in use.
- Ask every time lets you make the decision when permission is requested.
- Don’t allow denies the Google app location permission.
Turning off device location or denying the Google app permission can affect other Google app features, not only Gemini. Google specifically cautions that features such as Weather and nearby Search results may be affected. Also, because location can come from another Google service, check that service’s permission if you want to limit precise location across the request path.
Review location permissions on other platforms
On platforms other than Android, the precise steps depend on the device, operating system, browser and whether Gemini is being used as the device assistant. Google advises reviewing mobile-app location permissions for services such as Gemini and Google Maps. Use your device’s app-permission controls to inspect both, and check browser location access when using Gemini on the web.
Think of these as separate checks rather than a single universal Gemini switch. A browser permission controls what the browser can provide to a web app; an app permission controls the relevant mobile app; and a service such as Maps can have its own role. The exact settings and labels vary, so verify them on the device you use.

Location permission and activity storage are related privacy questions, but they are not the same control. Google says precise location processed from a device or browser with permission is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity. It also says location data that Gemini Apps process is coarsened to a general area before storage in that activity. Google describes that stored area as larger than 3 square kilometers and containing at least 1,000 users; this is Google’s characterization of the area in its explanation, not an independent guarantee about every location event.

Location can still appear in the chat itself. If you write your city or ask about “where I am now,” or Gemini’s response names a place or city, that text may remain as part of the conversation. Deleting or reviewing Gemini Apps Activity should not be assumed to automatically erase location text from chat content. Review the conversation as well as activity settings if your concern is information written into a prompt or response.
Keep Activity and public Maps information
Google says Gemini automatically uses public information from Google Maps, but Keep Activity must be on for Gemini to use public Maps information. This is a requirement for that Maps capability, distinct from whether precise device location is granted. Google also says users can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity. If you turn Keep Activity off, be aware that the public Maps feature described by Google may no longer be available.
Connected Apps
Gemini’s Connected Apps can be connected or disconnected in Gemini settings. Google says Gemini does not access personal information or content in Google services without permission. That control concerns access to connected-service information; it does not make the separate location sources described above interchangeable. Review Connected Apps when deciding which services Gemini can use, and review device or browser location permissions when deciding whether precise location can be provided.

Choose settings based on the result you want
| Your priority | What to check | Likely trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Useful nearby places and directions | Keep Activity, sign-in, relevant app or browser location permission, and any saved Home or Work address you intend to use. | Gemini can provide more locally relevant results; precise results may require location permission. |
| Limit precise device location | Review the Gemini web/browser permission and the Google app and Maps permissions on your device; on Android inspect Use precise location. | Some precise or nearby results may be less useful. General location or a saved address can still inform relevant answers. |
| Decide request by request on Android | Consider Ask every time for the Google app’s location access, if that option is available. | You get a permission decision when requested, but may need to respond more often. |
| Reduce what is retained in activity | Review Gemini Apps Activity and Keep Activity settings; separately inspect chat text that mentions a location. | Turning Keep Activity off affects the public Maps capability Google describes, and chat content is a separate consideration. |
No single setting in this table guarantees that Gemini will never receive any location information. The practical goal is to identify which location sources you are comfortable allowing, then check the corresponding app, browser, account and activity controls.
If a location answer is unexpected
- Gemini gives nearby results even though precise location is off: general location, saved Home or Work details, or location from another Google service may still be involved. Check Maps and other relevant service permissions as well as the Gemini or Google app setting.
- The web indicator is gray but an answer names a place: the indicator reports Gemini web’s precise-location access, not whether the response can use general location, user-provided text or another Google service.
- Maps search or directions are unavailable: verify that you are signed in and Keep Activity is on, and check whether you are in a Live chat or Gemini in Google Messages, where the feature is unavailable.
- A setting name does not match these steps: Android versions and other platforms can label or organize location controls differently. Find the app’s location permission in the device’s settings rather than assuming the menu path is identical.
- A location appears in activity or a conversation: distinguish activity storage from text in the chat. Google’s stated coarsening and precise-location handling do not mean that a city or address written into the conversation is automatically removed.
What to remember
Gemini Maps can use location, but “location” is not synonymous with GPS permission. General area, saved Home or Work information, precise device location, and location supplied by another Google service are distinct possibilities. Check the Gemini web indicator or Android Google app permission for the app-specific view, then inspect Maps, browser and activity settings according to what you want to limit. For Maps place searches and directions, sign-in and Keep Activity are required under Google’s current help description; the feature does not provide live traffic or location history.
