Yes, Gemini Live can continue while you use other apps. Start the conversation with the phone unlocked, then swipe up from the bottom edge to put Gemini Live in the background. To return to the conversation, swipe down from the top edge and tap the Live with Gemini card.
A screen that is merely locked is different. Gemini Live can continue after you lock the phone only when Gemini on lock screen is enabled. If that setting is off, locking the phone places the conversation on hold. You cannot start a new Gemini Live session while the phone is locked.
What works, and what does not
Google’s Gemini Apps Help separates three situations that are often confused:

These rules apply to Gemini Live on Android phones and tablets through the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant. Google says updates roll out gradually, so the available controls can differ until your device receives the latest version.

Enable the notification required for background use
The background conversation is controlled through Android’s notification settings. If Live with Gemini notifications are disabled, the session may not remain available when you leave the full-screen view.
- Open the Android Settings app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose App notifications.
- Select Google.
- Turn on Live with Gemini.
Android labels vary by device and Android version. Look for the Google app’s notification categories if the wording is not identical. This setting is separate from simply allowing all Google notifications: the specific Live with Gemini category needs to be available and enabled.
Use Gemini Live while another app is open
Start the conversation first
Unlock the phone and start Gemini Live from the Gemini mobile app or through Gemini as the mobile assistant. Starting while the device is locked is not supported, so the first step must happen in an unlocked session.
Put Live in the background
- With Gemini Live active, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to leave the full-screen Live view.
- Open the app you want to use, such as a browser, notes app or calendar.
- Continue speaking to Gemini while that app is on screen. Keep the Live with Gemini notification enabled so Android can keep the session represented outside the full-screen interface.
Leaving the Gemini screen does not automatically end the conversation. The supported behavior is an active Live session alongside other apps, not a promise that Gemini will remain available after every interruption or system action. If Android or the app places the session on hold, use the notification to check its current state.

Return to the full-screen Live view
- Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification shade.
- Tap the Live with Gemini card.
- Gemini returns to its full-screen Live interface.
If the card is not visible, check that Live with Gemini notifications are enabled and that the conversation has not ended. The exact appearance of the card can vary with the device’s Android interface.
What happens when you turn the screen off
Locking an active conversation
Locking the phone does not have one universal result. When Gemini on lock screen is enabled, an already active Gemini Live conversation can continue after the screen locks. This is continuation of a session that has already started; it is not permission to begin Live from the lock screen.
When Gemini on lock screen is disabled
If the lock-screen setting is disabled, locking the phone puts Gemini Live on hold. Unlock the device to continue the conversation. Google also notes that if a session is put on hold or ends while the phone is locked, you must unlock the phone before continuing.
Starting from a locked phone
You cannot start Gemini Live on a locked screen. Unlock the phone, then launch Gemini Live. This limitation applies even if Gemini on lock screen is enabled, because that option governs continuation of an existing conversation rather than initial launch.

Controls available from the lock screen
When an active session is represented by a lock-screen notification, you can use that notification to get back to Gemini:
- Tap the Live with Gemini notification.
- Unlock the phone when Android requests it.
- Gemini opens the conversation again.
To stop Live without opening the full app, expand the Live with Gemini notification and tap End Live mode. Ending the mode is different from putting it on hold: after you end it, you need to start a new session from an unlocked phone.
How to tell whether the phone or the session caused a pause
A pause after leaving Gemini can have several causes. Check them in this order:
- Screen locked: If Gemini on lock screen is off, unlocking is required before the conversation can resume.
- Notification category off: Revisit Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Google → Live with Gemini and enable it.
- Session ended: An ended session cannot be resumed from the notification; start Live again after unlocking.
- Gradual feature rollout: Google releases changes progressively, so your device may not yet show the newest Live controls.
- Unsupported surface: Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or in Google Messages.
Google’s help guidance does not specify a guaranteed background or lock-screen duration. Do not assume that a session will remain active indefinitely simply because the screen is off. If the notification disappears or the session is put on hold, unlock the device and check Gemini directly.

Android devices and supported apps
The documented behavior is for Android phones and tablets using the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant. It is not a general statement that every Gemini interface supports Live. In particular, Google says Gemini Live is unavailable in the Gemini web app and in Google Messages.
Android manufacturers can use different Settings layouts, navigation gestures and lock-screen notification designs. The underlying requirements remain the same: begin Live while unlocked, enable the Live with Gemini notification category for background use, and enable Gemini on lock screen if you want an existing session to continue after locking.

With the Live session active, move to the browser and ask your question verbally. If you lock the phone while reading, continuation depends on Gemini on lock screen. With that option off, unlock before speaking again.

Ending a conversation privately from the lock screen
Expand the Live with Gemini notification and tap End Live mode. This ends the current Live session without requiring you to reopen the full-screen Gemini interface.
Important limitations
- Background operation requires an active Live session; it does not let you initiate Live from a locked phone.
- Other-app use and lock-screen continuation are separate capabilities. Supporting one does not guarantee the other.
- Notification settings and menu names can differ by Android version or device manufacturer.
- Google has not published a fixed maximum time for a background or lock-screen session, so no indefinite runtime should be promised.
- Availability can lag behind Google’s documentation because updates are released gradually.

Can Gemini Live run in the background?
Yes. During an active session, you can use other apps. Enable Live with Gemini notifications, swipe up from the bottom edge, and return through the notification card.
Does Gemini Live keep going when the screen is off?
It can, but only for an already active conversation when Gemini on lock screen is enabled. Otherwise, locking the phone puts Live on hold.
