Yes. Gears of War: E-Day supports cross-platform multiplayer between its supported Xbox and PC versions, including Steam. Cross-progression depends on where you own the game and how your accounts are linked: Xbox Play Anywhere shares progression between Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC, while Steam offers roaming saves through optional account linking. To send a cross-platform squad invitation from Steam, the official FAQ says you must link an Xbox account.
What cross-play means in E-Day
Cross-play lets players using different supported platforms join the same online session. In E-Day, that includes multiplayer between Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam versions. The Steam listing describes two main online formats: cooperative play for two to four players and competitive multiplayer for up to eight players across supported platforms.
Cross-play is separate from cross-progression. You can join a friend’s game from another platform without automatically having every save, unlock or entitlement available on your own copy. Multiplayer compatibility answers “Can we play together?” Cross-progression answers “Will my progress follow me when I change platforms?”
Which platforms are supported?
The official Xbox product listing names Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam as E-Day release platforms. The available product information confirms cross-play among supported Xbox and PC versions, but it does not document a PlayStation version or PlayStation cross-play. Do not interpret “cross-platform” as support for every console.

How cross-progression works between Xbox and Microsoft Store PC
Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest shared-progression arrangement documented for E-Day. The official Xbox page says Play Anywhere lets you play across Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression. That means an eligible purchase in the Xbox/Microsoft Store ecosystem is designed to keep your progression available when you move between those two versions, provided you sign in with the same account.
What you need
- An Xbox Series X|S copy or an eligible Microsoft Store PC copy of E-Day.
- The same Xbox/Microsoft account on the console and the Microsoft Store PC installation.
- The game installed through the corresponding Xbox or Microsoft Store service rather than an unrelated Steam installation.
What “shared progression” covers
Shared progression means the game can make your account-linked progress available on both Play Anywhere platforms. It is not the same as receiving two unrelated licenses from every storefront. Play Anywhere applies to the Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC relationship described on the product page; it should not be treated as a blanket cross-buy promise for Steam.
How Steam roaming saves and account linking work
Steam’s store description says that optional account linking lets players carry progress with roaming saves, connect with friends and send cross-platform invites. This indicates that Steam can associate your progress with a linked account instead of leaving all save data isolated to one computer.

The wording is intentionally narrower than the Xbox Play Anywhere statement. It does not promise that every campaign, profile or unlock transfers identically among Xbox, Microsoft Store PC and Steam in every circumstance. Treat Steam’s feature as account-linked roaming saves, and keep a local or platform backup where the game and platform support one.
Is an Xbox account required to play on Steam?
No. The official Gears of War FAQ, published August 4, 2026, states that an Xbox/Microsoft account is not required to play on Steam. You can therefore start the Steam version without creating or linking an Xbox account solely for basic play.
When must you link an Xbox account?
The same FAQ says that you must link an Xbox account if you want to send a cross-platform squad invite. In practical terms, a Steam player who wants to invite an Xbox or Microsoft Store PC friend should complete the account-linking step before trying to send that invitation. The documented requirement concerns sending the invite; it does not say that every Steam player must link an account to join ordinary Steam multiplayer.

Cross-play, cross-progression and cross-buy are different
These terms are often used together but describe different rights:

For example, you may be able to join a Steam friend from Xbox even if your purchase rights are held separately. Conversely, owning an Xbox copy does not by itself establish that the same purchase unlocks the Steam edition.
How to play with someone on another platform
Xbox or Microsoft Store PC joining a Steam player
- Install E-Day on your Xbox Series X|S or Microsoft Store PC system and sign in to the account that owns or accesses the game.
- Ask the Steam player to confirm that the Steam version is installed and online multiplayer is available.
- Use the game’s friend or squad interface to locate the other player. The exact display name can differ from the platform account name.
- If the Steam player is sending the invitation, have that player link an Xbox account first, because the official FAQ makes that a requirement for sending a cross-platform squad invite.
- Accept the invitation and select the intended co-op or competitive mode. Confirm that everyone appears in the same squad or lobby before launching.
Steam joining an Xbox player
- Launch E-Day from Steam and sign in to Steam normally.
- Link an Xbox account if you need to send the invitation or want to use the roaming-save and account-connection features described by Steam.
- Have the Xbox player create or open the multiplayer lobby.
- Use the game’s cross-platform friend or squad tools to join the lobby, then verify the player list before starting the match.
Because menu labels can change between builds, look for terms such as Friends, Squad, Invite, Link account or Cross-platform rather than relying on a particular button name.

Game Pass availability
The official Xbox page says E-Day is included at launch with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That gives subscribers a way to access the Xbox or Microsoft Store PC version without buying a separate copy while the title remains included in the applicable catalog and region.
Game Pass access and Steam ownership are separate storefront arrangements. A Game Pass entitlement should not be assumed to unlock the Steam edition, and a Steam purchase should not be assumed to create an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.
Common setup problems and fixes
You can play alone but cannot invite a cross-platform friend
If the Steam player is trying to send the invitation, check the Xbox-account link first. Steam play itself does not require that link, but the official FAQ specifically requires it for sending a cross-platform squad invite. After linking, restart the game or sign out and back in if the friend list does not refresh.

The game appears on one platform but progress is missing on another
First identify the two storefronts involved. Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC are the pair covered by the explicit Play Anywhere shared-progression statement. If one side is Steam, check that the intended account is linked and understand that Steam describes roaming saves rather than promising identical transfer behavior for every save category.
A purchase does not appear on the other platform
Check whether you are expecting cross-buy rather than cross-progression. Play Anywhere documents shared progression and access across Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC. It does not establish that an Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase grants the Steam license. Verify which account owns the game and which storefront launched the installation.
A friend cannot find your account
Confirm that both players are online, using the correct in-game identity, and running supported Xbox or PC versions. If the Steam player is sending the invite, complete the Xbox-account link. Also check privacy, communication and parental-control settings on the relevant platform accounts, since those can prevent invitations even when the game supports cross-play.

The documented platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam. The available information does not confirm Xbox One, PlayStation or other-console support. If a friend is using an unlisted platform, cross-play cannot be assumed.

Bottom line for choosing a version
Choose the Xbox or Microsoft Store PC ecosystem when guaranteed shared progression between those two versions is your priority; that is the relationship explicitly covered by Xbox Play Anywhere. Choose Steam if that is where your group plays, knowing that cross-play is supported and roaming saves are available through optional account linking, but that sending a cross-platform squad invite requires an Xbox account link. In all cases, verify the storefront entitlement separately from the multiplayer feature.
