Often, yes. A laptop may reduce CPU and GPU power, switch to integrated graphics, cap frame rates, or apply a manufacturer cooling profile when it is unplugged. Demanding games, 3D work, video effects, CAD, and other GPU-heavy applications can therefore run slower on battery. The size of the slowdown is not universal: it depends on the laptop, Windows power mode, manufacturer profile, graphics configuration, application, and workload.
Why battery power can reduce performance
A laptop has a finite battery watt-hour budget. When the system is disconnected from AC power, firmware, Windows, and graphics drivers may limit electrical power so the battery lasts longer and the chassis stays within safe temperature limits. That can reduce clock speeds, constrain sustained CPU or GPU load, or change which graphics processor handles an application.
Windows exposes these trade-offs through power modes. Microsoft describes the choices as better battery life, balanced operation, or better performance. On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, the mode can be set separately for Plugged in and On battery. Selecting the performance-oriented option can allow more speed, but Microsoft warns that it uses more power, drains the battery faster, and may make the computer warmer.

Laptop manufacturers can control GPU and thermal behavior and connect their own profiles to Windows power modes. A vendor utility may therefore select a quiet, cool, or battery-saving profile even when Windows appears to be configured for performance.

Games
Games are sensitive to both graphics throughput and frame-time consistency. A battery profile can lower average frame rate, increase stutter in complex scenes, lengthen shader or asset loading, or reduce performance after the laptop warms up. Some systems also impose a frame-rate target specifically to extend battery life.
Creative and technical applications
Video exports, 3D rendering, animation previews, CAD viewports, photo filters, AI-assisted effects, and other GPU-heavy operations may take longer unplugged. CPU-heavy tasks can also slow if processor power limits are reduced. A light document or web workload may show little difference because it does not keep the high-performance hardware busy.
Why the result can vary during one session
Battery charge, temperature, fan policy, and the application’s current scene all matter. A laptop may perform normally for a short task, then reduce clocks during a long render as heat accumulates. Conversely, an easy scene may not trigger a limit at all. “Runs slower on battery” is therefore a workload-dependent observation, not a fixed property of every laptop.
Graphics switching is a major variable
Many laptops contain an integrated GPU and a separate high-performance GPU. NVIDIA Optimus can choose between them according to the application. On battery, a system may favor integrated graphics to reduce consumption, or it may continue using the discrete GPU with a lower power budget.

Using the high-performance GPU can improve a demanding application, but NVIDIA notes that it can shorten battery life. If you change the preferred graphics processor while an application is already open, restart that application so the new choice takes effect.
NVIDIA BatteryBoost is another battery-specific control on supported GeForce laptops. It activates when the computer is unplugged and regulates GPU performance while allowing a target frame rate. NVIDIA describes the feature as balancing a smooth gaming experience with longer battery operation. Its availability and behavior depend on the laptop, supported GPU, driver, and configuration.
Battery versus AC: what to compare
To find out what your own laptop is doing, compare the same workload under controlled conditions. Keep the application version, project or game scene, resolution, graphics settings, and performance profile constant.

How to improve unplugged performance in Windows
- Open the power controls. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Look for separate controls labeled Plugged in and On battery, where your hardware exposes them.
- Choose the appropriate mode. Windows lists options such as Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Select Best performance only when the extra speed is worth shorter battery life and more heat.
- Apply the change before testing. Close or restart the game or creative application if it does not immediately respond. Some driver and profile changes are not applied to an already-running process.
- Check the manufacturer’s utility. Open the laptop maker’s control application and inspect its performance, fan, thermal, or GPU profile. A quiet or eco mode can override or supplement Windows settings.
- Confirm the application’s GPU. On a system using NVIDIA Optimus, set the application to the high-performance NVIDIA processor when appropriate, then restart the application. Use this only for workloads that need it because the discrete GPU consumes more energy.
- Inspect BatteryBoost if available. Check its target frame-rate value and whether it is automatically activating on battery. A low target can look like a graphics problem when it is an intentional battery policy.
- Retest the identical workload. Record frame rate, render or export time, temperatures, and battery drain. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which control made a difference.
What to expect from Best performance
Best performance is not a promise of plugged-in performance while running on battery. It simply tells Windows to favor speed within the limits imposed by the laptop’s firmware, battery, cooling system, and graphics configuration. Microsoft specifically cautions that the mode increases power consumption, drains the battery more quickly, and may make the device run warmer.
On a thin laptop with a small battery or conservative cooling, the improvement may be modest. On a higher-power model, the setting may remove a noticeable limit, but sustained work can still trigger thermal throttling. If the system becomes too hot, fans may run faster and clocks may fall again.

NVIDIA’s BatteryBoost feature page, accessed October 13, 2026, describes up to two times longer battery life while gaming. That is NVIDIA’s feature claim, not a measurement of how much slower every game becomes on battery and not a result that applies to every laptop.

In a 2022 discussion of Advanced Optimus, NVIDIA presented 11% to 27%, and beyond, frame-rate increases when comparing Advanced Optimus with Optimus and non-Optimus laptop configurations. Those figures compare graphics configurations; they are not a battery-versus-AC test. They should not be used as a general estimate of unplugged slowdown.

When poor performance is not caused by battery mode
- The application is on the wrong GPU. Integrated graphics may be selected for a game or renderer that needs the discrete processor.
- A frame-rate cap is active. BatteryBoost, an in-game limit, a driver setting, or a display refresh policy can hold the frame rate below what the hardware could otherwise produce.
- Thermal throttling is occurring. A blocked vent, soft surface, dust, or an aggressive quiet profile can reduce sustained speed on AC or battery.
- The laptop is not recognizing its adapter. Some systems reduce performance when the adapter is missing, defective, underpowered, or not correctly identified.
- The workload changed. A more complex game scene, larger video timeline, higher-resolution texture, or different render setting can make an unchanged power profile appear slower.
- Drivers or firmware changed. A graphics-driver, BIOS, or manufacturer-utility update can alter power and GPU-selection behavior.
If performance is poor even when plugged in
Check that the laptop reports AC power and recognizes the correct adapter. NVIDIA’s power-mode documentation states that the power adapter must be capable of providing the selected power output. Do not assume a higher-wattage replacement is suitable: compatibility depends on the exact laptop model, connector, voltage, current, charging protocol, and manufacturer requirements.
If the adapter is absent, damaged, or insufficient, use a compatible OEM-rated laptop AC adapter specified for that model. The information available here is not enough to identify a safe wattage or adapter part number for an individual computer.
A practical decision guide
Choose battery efficiency when
- You are reading, browsing, editing documents, or doing other light work.
- Maximum runtime matters more than export speed or frame rate.
- Heat and fan noise are undesirable.
Choose balanced mode when
- You need normal responsiveness with reasonable battery life.
- The application workload changes between light and demanding tasks.
- You want a sensible default before measuring a performance problem.
Choose performance mode when
- A game, render, export, or simulation is clearly power-limited.
- You accept faster battery drain and potentially higher temperatures.
- You have confirmed the correct GPU and manufacturer profile first.
Bottom line for gamers and creators
Gaming and creative software often does run slower on laptop battery, but there is no honest one-size-fits-all percentage. The slowdown may come from Windows power mode, an OEM thermal profile, graphics switching, BatteryBoost, a frame-rate cap, or heat. Set the Windows and manufacturer profiles deliberately, verify the application’s GPU, inspect any battery-specific limiter, and compare the same workload using frame rate or completion time. If the laptop is slow on AC as well, investigate adapter recognition and thermal conditions instead of treating battery behavior as the only cause.
