Yes, sometimes—but gaming is not a universal or stand-alone treatment. A well-chosen, time-limited session can provide short-term relief through distraction, positive emotion, a sense of mastery, or social connection. Controlled studies of therapeutic, applied, and casual games report modest average benefits, yet outcomes vary widely by the game, player, setting, duration, and comparison activity.
For persistent anxiety, panic, depression, trauma symptoms, or suicidal thoughts, gaming should complement—not replace—evidence-based professional care. The useful question is not “Are games good or bad?” but “Does this particular way of playing leave me better able to function afterward?”
What the research actually shows
The strongest evidence points to a conditional, generally modest benefit rather than a blanket mental-health effect. Studies use very different games and outcomes: some measure anxiety during a medical procedure, others assess symptoms over weeks, and others record a momentary change in mood. Those results cannot be treated as interchangeable.
Large review of studies in young people
A 2024 systematic review identified 145 randomized controlled studies involving people aged 6 to 24. In clinical or subclinical groups, applied games showed their clearest signals for social skills, verbal memory, and anxiety. Casual games also showed benefits for depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Among healthy participants, games were promising as a distraction in medical settings and for improving momentary affect (how someone feels at that moment). The authors noted that studies used inconsistent outcome measures and that nonspecific factors—such as attention from researchers, novelty, and expectations—need better study.

Meta-analysis of therapeutic games
A separate 2024 systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis covered 14 studies, 2,027 participants, and 18 effect sizes. Across the measured outcomes, the average standardized effect was d = 0.35 (95% confidence interval 0.23 to 0.47; p < .001). That is a small-to-medium average effect. It supports the possibility that purpose-designed therapeutic games can help, while the variation between interventions and outcomes means the number is not a promise for any individual player.
Why commercial games cannot be generalized
A review of commercial off-the-shelf games found that results depend strongly on game characteristics, platform, and time played. The evidence spans consoles, computers, smartphones, mobile consoles, and virtual reality. A positive finding for one title, genre, or context therefore does not establish that every commercial game reduces anxiety. It also does not identify a universally “best” game or a safe number of hours for everyone.
Evidence during COVID-19 restrictions
A 2022 PRISMA review by Pallavicini, Pepe, and Mantovani examined 24 studies conducted during the early COVID-19 restrictions. Augmented-reality and online multiplayer games sometimes reduced stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness in adolescents and young adults. The same review found detrimental effects in some at-risk groups. Isolation, vulnerability, and the reason someone is playing can change the outcome in opposite directions.
What “help” can mean
People use the word help for several different outcomes. Separating them prevents a brief mood lift from being mistaken for treatment of an anxiety disorder.

Momentary coping
A bounded session can shift attention away from an acute stressor and create a temporary change in mood. This is similar to taking a walk, listening to music, or watching a show: useful for getting through a difficult moment, but not proof that the underlying source of stress has changed.
Social connection
Cooperative and multiplayer play can provide conversation, shared goals, and a sense of belonging, especially when in-person contact is limited. The quality of the interaction matters. Supportive teammates may be calming; harassment, competitive pressure, or fear of letting a group down can increase distress.
Structured intervention
Applied or serious games may deliver behavioral exercises, relaxation training, exposure tasks, or skills practice according to a study protocol. Their design, instructions, dose, and supervision are part of the intervention. Entertainment play does not automatically reproduce those ingredients.

Distraction during medical care
Games have shown promise for reducing anxiety around some medical procedures. In that setting, the game is a focused distraction used for a defined period, not a general prescription for chronic anxiety.

How gaming might reduce stress in the short term
Several mechanisms can operate at once, and none works for every player or game.
- Attention shift: A game occupies working memory and sensory attention, leaving less mental bandwidth for rumination during a short stressor.
- Positive emotion: Humor, curiosity, music, and visible progress can temporarily broaden mood and motivation.
- Mastery and agency: Clear goals, feedback, and achievable challenges can provide a sense of competence when real-life demands feel uncontrollable.
- Social support: Cooperative play can create a scheduled point of contact and shared activity.
- Relaxation or physiological pacing: Some purpose-designed experiences use slow interaction, breathing cues, or guided exercises. Their effects should be attributed to those features, not to the label “video game” alone.
These mechanisms explain why one person may feel restored after 30 minutes while another feels keyed up, frustrated, or guilty. Challenge intensity, competitive ranking, narrative content, social environment, and the player’s starting mood all matter.
Ordinary entertainment versus therapeutic games
| Dimension | Ordinary entertainment play | Purpose-designed therapeutic or applied game |
|---|---|---|
| Primary aim | Enjoyment, challenge, story, or social play | A defined skill, symptom, or behavioral outcome |
| Structure | Chosen and adjusted by the player | Usually follows a protocol, lesson, exercise, or treatment plan |
| Evidence | Findings are game- and context-specific | Evaluated in controlled studies of a particular intervention |
| Typical outcome measured | Short-term mood, engagement, or social experience | Target symptoms or skills over a stated period |
| Clinical status | Not established as a stand-alone treatment for an anxiety disorder | May show modest benefits, but effectiveness depends on the studied design and population |
This distinction is why a study of a therapeutic game cannot be used to claim that an unrelated entertainment title treats anxiety. The 2024 reviews support potential benefit from categories of interventions, not a product recommendation.

A game can be enjoyable and still be part of an unhealthy pattern. Conversely, spending time gaming is not by itself evidence of a disorder.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines gaming disorder in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as a pattern characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation despite negative consequences. For a diagnosis, the pattern must cause significant impairment or distress in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas and is normally evident for at least 12 months.
WHO says gaming is a healthy hobby for most users and that only a small proportion develop clinically significant impairment or distress. Published problem-gaming prevalence estimates range from 1.3% to 9.9% across populations. These are proxy estimates rather than one worldwide rate because researchers use different definitions and measurement instruments.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRisk is not evenly distributed. Someone with existing anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, social isolation, or a history of problematic gaming may respond differently from a healthy participant in a laboratory study. A game that provides connection for one person may become avoidance or loss of control for another.

A practical, low-risk way to use gaming as coping
The following approach treats gaming as one tool in a broader coping plan and makes its effect observable.
- Define the job. Decide whether you need a brief distraction, social contact, a mood lift, or a structured exercise. Do not expect a recreational session to resolve a persistent disorder.
- Choose the least aggravating format. Prefer a game that reliably leaves you calmer, connected, or restored. If ranked competition, frightening content, aggressive voice chat, or rapid time pressure raises your arousal, choose a different format.
- Set the stopping cue first. Use an alarm, a natural chapter or match boundary, or a written end time. Keep the cue outside the game so you do not negotiate with yourself at the moment of stopping.
- Protect essentials. Schedule play after—not instead of—sleep, meals, movement, work or study, medical care, and important relationships. Avoid starting a session so close to bedtime that it predictably delays sleep.
- Check the after-effect. About 10 to 30 minutes after stopping, note anxiety, irritability, physical tension, guilt, energy, and sleep readiness. Repeat this check across several sessions rather than judging from one unusually good or bad day.
- Adjust the pattern. Shorten sessions, change the game, mute hostile communication, play cooperatively, or replace gaming with another coping activity if the after-effect is repeatedly negative.
- Escalate support when needed. If you cannot control play, major responsibilities are being displaced, or distress continues despite attempts to change, discuss the pattern with a qualified mental-health professional.
Protect your hearing while you play
Sound is a separate health issue from anxiety relief. In 2024, WHO reported that studies involving more than 50,000 people found game sound levels often near or above permissible limits, with possible risk of hearing loss or tinnitus. Keep volume as low as practical, take listening breaks, and treat ringing, muffled hearing, or sound sensitivity as reasons to reduce exposure and seek medical advice.
When gaming is not enough
Seek professional assessment when anxiety is persistent, causes avoidance, disrupts sleep or work, produces panic attacks, follows trauma, or occurs with depression or thoughts of self-harm. In an emergency or if you may act on suicidal thoughts, contact local emergency services or a crisis service immediately. Gaming can coexist with therapy, medication prescribed by a clinician, exercise, sleep treatment, and social support; it should not delay them.
How to interpret claims about games and mental health
Use these checks when reading a study, app description, or online recommendation:
- Was the intervention a named therapeutic game or an unrelated commercial title?
- Were participants healthy, clinically anxious, or already experiencing problematic gaming?
- Was the outcome a momentary mood rating, anxiety during a procedure, or sustained symptom change?
- How long was the intervention, and what was the comparison condition?
- Could novelty, researcher attention, social contact, or expectations explain part of the result?
- Did the study report harms, sleep effects, dropout, or functional impairment as well as benefits?
The answer to “Does gaming help?” is therefore conditional: some games and play patterns can provide short-term coping or modest symptom benefits, while uncontrolled or distress-amplifying use can do the opposite. The evidence does not support a specific console, title, headset, controller, headphones, or book as an anxiety or stress treatment.
