Gaming can be associated with faster reaction times and better visual attention, especially among experienced action-game players. That does not mean ordinary gaming reliably makes someone faster on a field, court or track. The clearest pattern is task specificity: people often improve at the type of response they practice. Transfer to real sport is smaller, and structured physical exercise currently has more consistent evidence for improving esports reaction time than leisure gaming has for improving traditional athletic performance.
Whether gaming helps depends on the game’s visual demands, the skill being measured, the player’s experience, the training schedule and whether performance is tested in the real environment rather than only in a laboratory or game.
What the evidence actually shows
Gaming studies answer several different questions that are often treated as one:
- Do regular players perform differently from non-players?
- Can a training program cause a measurable improvement?
- Does an improvement transfer to a sport, match or physical movement?
- Does a short gaming or exercise session change performance immediately?
Those questions produce different effect sizes. A 2020 dual systematic review by Bediou and colleagues reported that regular action-video-game players outperformed non-players in 25 of 28 included studies on attention-related abilities, including reaction time and attentional control. Because most comparisons were observational, the result shows an association rather than proof that gaming caused the advantage. People with naturally strong visuomotor skills may also be more likely to choose or persist with action games.

A 2023 meta-analysis by Smith and Basak combined 63 studies, 118 investigations and 2,079 participants. It found an overall cognitive-training effect of g=0.25, a small average benefit, with selective rather than universal transfer. The features of a game predicted outcomes better than a broad label such as “action” or “strategy.” In other words, two games in the same genre can train very different abilities.
Does gaming make reaction time faster?
Action-game players often respond faster on related tests
Action games commonly require rapid visual search, target detection, divided attention and precise hand-eye responses. Regular players frequently perform better on reaction-time or attentional-control tests that resemble those demands. The 25-of-28 finding from Bediou et al. is substantial, but it should be read as a comparison between groups, not as a guaranteed training prescription.
A laboratory reaction-time score measures the interval between a stimulus and a recorded response, usually a button press or controller action. It does not measure how quickly an athlete recognizes a passing lane, brakes, changes direction, accelerates, maintains balance or executes a sport technique. Those additional stages can dominate real performance.

Training can improve the practiced response
When a controlled intervention improves reaction time, the largest gains usually occur on tests that resemble the training task. A 2024 meta-analysis of 22 perceptual-cognitive-training studies illustrates the difference:
| Outcome | Effect size | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Task-specific response accuracy | ES=1.51 | Large improvement on closely matched laboratory tasks |
| On-court transfer accuracy | ES=0.65 | Moderate improvement when tested in sport context |
| Task-specific reaction time | ES=−0.91 | Large reduction in response time on the trained type of test |
| Transfer-test reaction time | ES=−0.44 | Smaller reduction on a different or more realistic test |
For reaction time, the negative sign indicates a reduction in time, which is beneficial when accuracy is maintained. The same analysis found that the transfer effect on real-game performance was inferior to the laboratory effect. A faster button press is therefore evidence of improved response speed, not automatic evidence of faster athletic movement.
Why faster game reactions do not automatically produce better athletic performance
Sport performance has more steps than stimulus detection
In a match, an athlete must identify relevant information, predict what will happen, choose an action, move the body, control equipment and adjust to an opponent. Gaming may exercise parts of visual attention or decision speed, but it generally does not reproduce the strength, mobility, balance, timing, technical mechanics or physical conditioning required by a sport.

Transfer falls as the task becomes less similar
Transfer is strongest when the trained and tested tasks share visual cues, timing, decisions and response requirements. A game that demands peripheral target detection may help a similar visual-attention test. It is less likely to improve a goalkeeper’s dive, a tennis player’s split step or a sprinter’s acceleration unless those components are trained directly.

Game labels are too broad to predict benefits
Smith and Basak’s 2023 analysis found that specific gameplay features predicted cognitive outcomes better than genre names. A slow strategy title and a fast game can both be sold as “strategy” or “action” while requiring different attention patterns, response speeds and decisions. There is no established universal genre, duration or weekly dose that improves athletic performance.
Can game-based training help athletes?
Video-based football training
A 2022 systematic review examined video-based training in football. Eight of 10 studies reported improved anticipation or decision-making after training. Video drills can expose players to structured tactical situations, allow repeated viewing and focus attention on relevant cues. The review also called for retention tests and transfer tests, because an immediate improvement after viewing does not establish that the skill remains weeks later or appears in competitive play.

For an athlete, video work is best treated as a supplement to technical and physical practice. Use clips that match the athlete’s position, tactical choices and viewpoint, then test decisions in representative drills rather than relying on a computer score.
Virtual reality and perceptual-cognitive drills
VR and other perceptual-cognitive systems can provide controlled, repeatable scenes and record response accuracy or timing. The category evidence supports potential benefits, but it does not establish that every consumer product works or that one product is suitable for every sport. A valid program should specify the target skill, use sport-relevant stimuli and include a test outside the training system.
How physical exercise affects esports performance
The direction of evidence is clearer for exercise and esports than for ordinary gaming and traditional sport. A 2026 exercise-intervention meta-analysis included 10 randomized controlled trials and 503 participants. Across interventions, the pooled reaction-time effect was SMD=0.84 (95% CI 0.50–1.18).

Subgroups differed by exercise type: VR or exergame interventions produced SMD=1.01, while traditional aerobic exercise produced SMD=0.64. Operational accuracy also improved, with SMD=0.58 (95% CI 0.40–0.76; I²=0%), indicating consistent results across those studies for that outcome.
A broader 2026 systematic review of 12 experimental studies reported that acute physical exercise generally improved executive function, reaction time, aiming accuracy and elimination rate during esports tasks. “Acute” means the change followed a single exercise session or short exposure; it does not prove a lasting training adaptation. Chronic exercise programs produced mixed direct game-performance results, so regular exercise should not be advertised as a guaranteed rank or win-rate increase.
Acute versus chronic effects
- Acute exercise: may temporarily improve readiness, attention and response speed when testing follows the session.
- Chronic exercise: can improve general fitness and may support performance, but studies have not produced a consistent direct improvement in game outcomes.
- Ordinary gaming: is associated with some cognitive advantages, yet controlled evidence for broad athletic transfer remains limited.
Does competition change the effect?
Competitive pressure can alter attention and physiological arousal. A 2020 review of 17 studies found that non-competitive play was generally unrelated to psychophysiological stress, while competitive settings produced mixed findings for anxiety, cortisol and sympathetic responses. Some players may become more alert; others may become distracted or over-aroused. The evidence does not support a universal claim that competitive gaming improves or harms athletic reactions.

A practical way to use gaming without overclaiming its benefits
For athletes
- Define the target skill. Choose anticipation, visual search, decision speed or another measurable ability instead of “reflexes” as a vague goal.
- Select a matching task. Use video, VR or game scenarios that reproduce the athlete’s visual cues and decisions.
- Keep sport practice primary. Continue strength, conditioning, technical and tactical work; game-based practice cannot replace those components.
- Test outside the training system. Compare a baseline with a delayed test and a representative sport drill. Include accuracy, not just speed.
- Check retention. Re-test after a gap without daily exposure. An effect that disappears quickly is not the same as a durable skill.
For esports players
- Use short, repeatable tests. Track reaction time, aiming accuracy and decision errors under the same settings.
- Add physical exercise deliberately. A moderate aerobic or exergame session may improve acute readiness, but monitor whether fatigue offsets the benefit.
- Separate warm-up from training. A temporary post-exercise boost should not be counted as a permanent improvement in skill.
- Protect the conditions of play. Keep sleep, breaks, hydration and input settings consistent when comparing sessions so a changing setup does not masquerade as a cognitive gain.
For coaches and parents
- Ask what was measured, how long training lasted and whether participants were randomly assigned.
- Prefer studies with a control group, delayed retention testing and transfer tests in the real sport or game.
- Do not infer a physical-performance benefit from a faster button press alone.
- Judge a program by accuracy and decision quality as well as speed; rushing can increase errors.
How to interpret claims and avoid common mistakes
- Correlation is not causation: experienced players may begin with better visual skills.
- Laboratory improvement is not match improvement: the 2024 meta-analysis found larger task-specific effects than on-court transfer effects.
- One game is not every game: gameplay features, not a simple genre label, better predict outcomes.
- Immediate effects are not permanent: acute exercise findings describe short-term changes unless a study tests lasting retention.
- Speed without accuracy is not progress: a lower reaction-time number is useful only when correct responses remain stable.
- Different populations limit generalization: studies vary in age, gaming experience, sport, game, test and intervention duration.
The practical answer
Gaming can sharpen reaction time, attention and visuomotor responses in some players, particularly when the game repeatedly trains those demands. The strongest evidence concerns closely matched cognitive tasks. Transfer to traditional athletic performance is real in some structured perceptual-cognitive programs but smaller than laboratory gains and not guaranteed by recreational play.
If the goal is faster esports performance, physical exercise has more consistent recent support, especially for short-term reaction-time and accuracy outcomes. If the goal is better field or court performance, combine sport-specific practice with appropriately designed video or VR drills, then verify improvement in realistic, delayed tests. Treat gaming as a targeted supplement—not a substitute for physical conditioning, technique or tactical training.
