Everything searches file and folder names by default. Its normal search is fast because names and paths are indexed. It can also look inside files when you add the content: search function, but file contents are not indexed, so content searches read matching candidate files and may be slow.
In practice, use ordinary terms when you know part of a name or path. Use content: only when the words you need are inside the file, and narrow the candidate set with an extension, folder, or date filter first.
What Everything searches by default
Everything’s core job is locating files and folders from their names. It maintains an index of names and paths, allowing a query to return matching items without opening every file on disk. That indexed lookup is why a partial filename or folder search is normally very fast.
A name search can match text in a file’s name, a folder name, or the path leading to it. It does not, by itself, inspect the words in a document, spreadsheet, PDF, or text file. A file named project-notes.docx can be found because of “project” or “notes” in its name; a sentence that appears only inside that document is not part of an ordinary name search.

The official usage documentation describes indexing local NTFS volumes. Coverage therefore depends on which volumes are configured for Everything and on the file-system scope available to the installation. Do not assume that every volume, network location, removable disk, or file type is automatically included; check the configured indexes when an expected item is missing.
How content search works
Everything provides an on-demand content search through the content: function. Add content: followed by the text you want to find. Everything then examines the contents of candidate files instead of relying only on the name index.
For example, this query searches Word documents whose names contain “recipe” and whose contents contain “garlic”:

You can apply the same method to PDFs in a Downloads folder:
*.pdf downloads content:invoiceHere, *.pdf limits the file type, downloads limits the location, and content:invoice searches the text extracted from each candidate PDF. Adjust the path to the folder as it appears in your indexed namespace.
What the two parts of a query do
- Name and path terms: match indexed file or folder names and their paths.
content:: tells Everything to inspect text inside candidate files.- Extension filters: such as
*.docxor*.pdf, prevent unrelated formats from being opened. - Folder filters: restrict the scan to a known location.
- Date or other filters: reduce the number of files that need content inspection.
Why content searches are slower
Everything indexes names, not file contents. A normal search can consult its name index directly. A content search must open candidate files, obtain readable text, and test that text for the requested term. The official guide warns that, because file content is not indexed, content searches can be extremely slow.

The result depends on how many candidates match your other filters, their sizes, the storage location, the format, and whether the required text extraction component is available. Searching a small folder of text files is a different workload from scanning thousands of large PDFs across a volume.

Reduce the candidate set before adding content:
- Start with the narrowest folder you can identify, such as a project directory or Downloads.
- Add an extension when the expected format is known, for example
*.txt,*.docx, or*.pdf. - Add a distinctive filename term if one exists, such as
reportorinvoice. - Add a modified-date or similar filter when you know roughly when the file was created or changed.
- Only then add
content:your-termand allow the search to complete.
This order does not change what content: means; it changes how many files Everything has to read before it can return an answer.
Which file formats can be searched?
Standard text files are supported natively. For other document formats, Everything uses installed system IFilters to extract searchable text. An IFilter is a system text-extraction component associated with a file format. If the appropriate filter is installed and functioning, Everything can ask it for the document’s text and apply the content query.
When an IFilter is unavailable, Everything can fall back to searching the file directly as text. That fallback is not equivalent to full, format-aware document extraction. Binary structures, compressed data, encoding choices, or layout-specific content can affect what is found. Consequently, support and results vary with the file type and the text-extraction components installed on the system.
What this means for common documents
- Plain text: native support is expected, subject to the file being readable.
- Office-style documents and PDFs: results depend on the relevant installed IFilter or on the fallback text search behavior.
- Unsupported or unusual formats: a content query may return no match even when a viewer visibly shows words, because Everything may not have a usable extraction path for that format.
- Scanned pages and images: visible words are not necessarily text data. Without text in the file or an extraction component that can recognize it,
content:cannot match the printed words.
The last two cases are practical consequences of the extraction requirement: Everything searches text it can read from the file, not pixels on a page.

Step-by-step: find a word inside files
- Open Everything and identify the scope. Confirm that the volume or folder containing the files is included in Everything’s configured local NTFS index.
- Choose a file type. If you know the format, begin with an extension such as
*.pdfor*.docx. - Limit the location. Add the folder path, for example
downloads, rather than searching an entire volume. - Add a filename clue if available. A term such as
invoicecan eliminate unrelated files before content reading begins. - Add the content function. Append
content:and the word or text to find, such ascontent:garlic. - Review the results. Open a result in its normal application to confirm the exact context, especially when the format uses an IFilter or fallback extraction.
A complete example is:
*.pdf downloads invoice content:invoiceThe repeated “invoice” is intentional but not required: the first occurrence narrows names, while content:invoice tests the document text. If filenames do not contain a useful clue, remove the standalone term and keep the extension, path, and content function.
Troubleshooting missing or unexpected matches
The file appears by name but not by content
First check that the query actually includes content:. An ordinary search will never inspect document text. If the function is present, verify that the file is readable and that its format has a working IFilter or a text-search fallback that can interpret it.
A content search returns too slowly
Stop and narrow the candidate set instead of broadening the query. Add a folder, extension, filename term, or modified-date filter. Searching a whole indexed volume forces Everything to inspect far more files than searching a known project directory.

A PDF or Office document produces no match
Text extraction may be the limiting factor. The format might lack an installed IFilter, the document may contain only scanned images, or its internal encoding may not be exposed through the available extraction path. Test a known plain-text file with the same word to distinguish a query problem from a format problem.

A folder or drive is absent entirely
Content search cannot find a file that is outside Everything’s configured scope. Check the indexed local NTFS volumes and folder configuration first. An unindexed location is a coverage issue, not evidence that the word is absent from the file.
The result seems to match the wrong text
Content matching is based on text extracted from the file. Extraction can include metadata or represent formatting differently from what a viewer displays. Open the result in its associated application and verify the passage before treating it as a definitive phrase match.
Choosing the right search for the job
Use ordinary search when the name is known
Search terms such as a project code, customer name in a filename, extension, or folder path belong in the normal indexed search. This is the fastest way to locate an item and does not require document text extraction.
Use content search when the filename is unhelpful
If files have generic names such as document1 or scan, but you remember a distinctive word inside them, use content: with a tight path and extension filter. This is the scenario the content function is designed for.
Use a two-stage workflow for large collections
For a large archive, first identify likely folders, extensions, or date ranges with indexed searches. Then run a content query against that smaller result set. The approach preserves Everything’s fast name lookup while limiting the expensive part—opening files and extracting text—to plausible candidates.
Bottom line
Everything does both, but not in the same way. File and folder names are the indexed, fast default. File contents are searchable only when you explicitly use content:; those contents are not indexed, so the operation can be slow and its success depends on readable text, file format support, installed IFilters, fallback behavior, and whether the location is within the configured NTFS index.
