For a properly installed, standards-compliant Ethernet cable within its supported distance, extra length does not normally reduce the negotiated speed or noticeably affect latency. It adds a tiny amount of signal travel time. Problems become more likely when the full cable channel exceeds its design limit or has weak components, poor terminations, damage, or interference.
How Ethernet cable length affects speed
Ethernet does not ordinarily slow down bit by bit as a cable gets longer. The devices establish a supported link speed. If the cable and installation cannot carry that rate reliably, the link may fail to establish, negotiate a lower supported mode, or experience errors that affect traffic. Which outcome occurs depends on the equipment and the condition of the whole channel; exceeding a distance guideline does not guarantee one particular failure.
For common four-pair copper Ethernet, plan for a maximum 100 m (328 ft) channel between active devices. Cisco describes the conventional construction as up to 90 m of permanent cable plus up to 10 m total of patch cords, and its guidance assumes no more than four RJ-45 connection points. Cisco’s cabling and troubleshooting guidance explains these conditions. Count patch cords and intermediate couplers, not just the in-wall cable.
Distance depends on both cable and data rate
A category label alone does not establish the reach for every installation. The relevant rate, cable construction, connections, environment, and equipment all matter. In a Cisco Catalyst 3650 guide published around 2016, the stated examples are:

- High-Bandwidth Data Transfer with PoE Support: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this Cat6a cable supports demanding applications including server networks, cloud computing, video surveillance, and HD video streaming. Supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), PoE+, and PoE++ for powering compatible devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points.
| Ethernet rate | Cable and distance stated in the guide |
|---|---|
| 10/100/1000 Mbps | Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6: up to 100 m |
| 2.5 Gbps | Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a: up to 100 m |
| 5 Gbps | Cat5e: up to 70 m; Cat6 or Cat6a: up to 100 m |
| 10 Gbps | Cat6: up to 55 m; Cat6a: up to 100 m |
These are documented installation limits for that guide, not a guarantee for every cable, port, or environment. Cisco’s multigigabit guidance likewise gives 55 m for 10GBASE-T over Cat6 and up to 100 m over Cat6a, while noting the effects of bundling, cable reach, and termination quality. Check the specifications for the exact equipment and installation. Cisco multigigabit port guidance and the Catalyst 3650 installation guide provide the model-specific details.
Does a longer cable increase latency or ping?
Yes, in principle: a signal takes longer to travel farther. But the cable’s contribution is very small at ordinary home and office lengths. Fluke Networks gives a typical signal velocity for structured wiring cable of 0.6c to 0.9c, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum. Applying that range to 100 m gives an estimated one-way propagation time of about 0.37–0.56 microseconds. This is a calculation from Fluke’s velocity range, not a figure directly reported by Fluke. Fluke Networks explains nominal velocity of propagation.

That cable delay is usually negligible compared with other contributors to a ping or application response time, such as network routing, switching, and queueing. A longer compliant Ethernet run is therefore unlikely to create a noticeable ping increase on its own.
What makes a long Ethernet run unreliable?
Reliability depends on the complete channel, not simply the number of meters. As a run approaches its supported limit, there is less margin for signal loss and other impairments. Connection points add loss and can become unreliable electrical points; poor terminations, damaged cable, unsuitable cable construction, interference, and crosstalk can also undermine a link. Cisco’s troubleshooting guidance notes that using stranded patch cable for an entire long run can make stable links difficult at 60–70 m, depending on line characteristics. That is a conditional example, not a prediction that every such run will fail.

Fluke Networks similarly summarizes the usual limit for Ethernet cable at 100 m in its Industrial Ethernet overview. Treat the figure as a channel design limit, not a sharp point at which every cable suddenly stops working.
How to check a slow or unstable Ethernet connection
- Check the negotiated link speed. Look at the network status on the computer or the switch port status, then confirm that both endpoints support the intended rate. A slow internet result alone does not show that cable length is the cause.
- Measure the whole channel. Include patch cords, couplers, and other connection points along with the permanent cable. Compare the total and the cable category with the specification for the target rate.
- Inspect cable and connections. Check the category marking, conductor construction, connector terminations, visible damage, and tight bundling. Reseat connections and, if practical, test with a known-good cable to isolate a suspect section.
- Test for wiring faults when symptoms persist. A basic cable tester can identify continuity and wiring problems; it does not by itself certify that a channel meets Ethernet performance standards. Certification requires an appropriate certification instrument. Fluke’s overview of verification, qualification, and certification explains the distinction.
- Match the cable to the rate and reach. For a 10 Gb/s copper channel approaching 100 m, Cat6a is the category specified for that reach in the cited Cisco guides; Cat6 is listed to 55 m for 10GBASE-T. Confirm the requirements for your devices and installation rather than relying on category alone.
What to use when the run exceeds 100 m
Do not assume a higher category of copper cable removes the normal four-pair Ethernet channel limit. For a longer path, use an appropriately specified active extension point or a fiber-optic link with compatible equipment. The choice depends on the required rate, total path length, installation environment, endpoint or transceiver compatibility, and the added complexity of the extension. Cisco’s Converged Plantwide Ethernet design guide covers the 100 m copper-channel planning limit and the need to plan longer links accordingly.
