Usually, you can turn off a smart TV’s Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) and continue using streaming apps. The trade-off is mainly at the television-platform level: features that identify what is playing, find the same program in other apps, list related episodes, or tailor the TV home screen may become less useful or unavailable. Recommendations inside a signed-in streaming app can continue to use that app’s own account and watch-history data. The exact result depends on the TV brand, model, software version, country, consent agreements, and the particular feature you disable.
What smart TV tracking actually does
“Smart TV tracking” commonly refers to ACR, a television-level content-recognition system. Roku describes ACR as sampling pixels from the screen, creating an encrypted fingerprint, and checking that fingerprint against a catalog. A match can identify programming from a streaming service, an antenna, or a connected HDMI device, not only from the TV’s own apps.
That recognition supports discovery features. For example, Roku’s More Ways to Watch can identify a program, show services where it is available, list additional episodes, and surface related titles. Roku says ACR must be enabled for that feature. Turning ACR off therefore changes what the TV itself can recognize and recommend; it does not automatically remove every app, account, or network connection.
ACR is only one data layer. Manufacturers describe separate controls or agreements for device discovery, voice recognition, interest-based advertising, and other connected features. Disabling one viewing-information control should not be treated as a universal “stop all telemetry” switch.

What changes when you disable ACR
TV-level recommendations and discovery
The clearest effect is a reduction in recommendations that depend on recognizing the current picture. A TV may no longer identify a show coming through an HDMI box, antenna, or app and then offer alternate ways to watch it. Related-title carousels, episode lookups, or “continue watching” style suggestions supplied by the TV platform can also change if they rely on that recognition layer.
There is no published universal percentage for how much recommendations worsen after opting out. The impact varies with the home-screen software, the model, the country, and the feature’s design. A TV that builds its home page mostly from app-account data may change little; a platform that emphasizes screen recognition may lose more discovery functions.
Recommendations inside streaming apps
A streaming app can personalize its own interface from information associated with your account, such as titles watched, ratings, profiles, searches, and playback history. That processing is separate from the TV’s ACR setting. Disabling ACR therefore does not establish that an app will stop recommending programs, nor does it guarantee that the app will behave exactly as before. The app’s privacy and history controls determine that layer.

App access and playback
Manufacturer guidance does not say that disabling ACR universally disables streaming applications. LG’s September 2026 statement says that, in supported markets and subject to the agreements accepted, declining optional data-driven services can still leave core functions available, including streaming apps, live TV, HDMI-connected devices, and software updates. That is a qualified statement about supported markets, not a promise for every LG model or every country.

How to turn off TV-level tracking without losing useful services
1. Identify the control you are changing
Look for labels such as ACR, Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, Viewing Data, or Interest-Based Advertising. Read the description on the confirmation screen. A setting that mentions advertising is not necessarily the same as ACR, and a voice-assistant consent is a separate decision.
2. Record the feature’s stated consequences
Before confirming, note whether the screen names a feature that will stop working. Roku explicitly ties More Ways to Watch to ACR. Other televisions may describe changes to personalized home-screen rows, program recognition, or cross-app discovery. If the description is vague, check the current support instructions for your exact model and region rather than assuming another model behaves identically.

3. Disable the setting
- On a Roku TV: open Settings, choose Privacy, select Smart TV Experience, and turn off the ACR-related option. Confirm the change when prompted.
- On a Samsung TV: open the privacy or terms-and-services area shown on your model and look for Viewing Information Services. Samsung’s cited guidance does not provide one menu path that applies to every model, so use the wording displayed on your set.
- On an LG TV: open the TV’s privacy or agreements settings and manage the ACR option separately from device discovery, voice recognition, and advertising choices. LG describes availability and consent by market, so the labels can differ.
4. Test the functions you actually use
After the change, open each streaming app, play a title, switch to an HDMI device, and return to the TV home screen. Confirm that playback, sign-in, live TV, and software-update checks still work. Then test any recognition feature you care about, such as identifying a program or finding it in another service. This separates a lost TV discovery feature from an app outage or account problem.

5. Adjust app-level personalization separately
If your concern is recommendations inside an individual service, use that service’s account settings, profile controls, watch-history tools, or privacy page. The TV’s ACR switch cannot be assumed to erase an app’s history or change the app’s recommendation algorithm. Conversely, changing an app profile does not necessarily disable the television platform’s recognition system.
Does turning tracking off delete data already collected?
Do not assume that opting out is the same as deletion. Roku expressly says that data collected or used while ACR was enabled will be retained after the setting is disabled. That is Roku’s stated rule and should not be generalized to Samsung, LG, or another manufacturer without checking its current privacy documentation.

If deletion matters, look for a separate privacy-request, account-management, reset, or data-deletion process. A factory reset may remove local accounts and settings while leaving data already held by a platform subject to its retention policy. Keep the questions separate: stopping future ACR collection, deleting historical records, and limiting advertising use can require different controls.
Why one TV can behave differently from another
- Model and software: manufacturers change menu labels, consent screens, and home-screen functions across model years and firmware releases.
- Country: feature catalogs, advertising partners, legal notices, and app availability differ by market. LG’s core-function statement is expressly limited to supported markets.
- Agreements: optional services may be governed by separate consent screens. Accepting one agreement does not prove that every connected feature is enabled.
- Input source: ACR may recognize streaming, antenna, and HDMI content when a catalog match exists, so the effect can be more noticeable for people who use several sources.
- Account data: a signed-in app can continue personalizing from its own records even when TV-level recognition is off.
What independent and historical evidence can—and cannot—show
A 2024 peer-reviewed ACM Internet Measurement Conference paper examined ACR traffic on Samsung and LG televisions in test scenarios in the United States and United Kingdom. It compared viewing modes, privacy controls, and country differences. Its scope was two manufacturers and its test setup, not every model, app, or network request. It is useful context for separating ACR traffic from other connected-TV activity, but it does not show that disabling ACR stops every request made by a television.
An FTC staff presentation from 2017 summarized an investigation of five sets—LG, Samsung, Vizio, Sony, and TCL/Roku—and reported that each offered a settings control intended to limit viewing-data collection. The presentation also described a possible loss of functionality when collection was limited and noted that controls could be difficult to find. Because the investigation is historical, use it to understand the long-running privacy trade-off, not to infer the current menu on a 2026 model.

The same presentation records a $1.5 million Federal Trade Commission settlement announced in February 2017 involving Vizio’s collection of viewing activity without consent. That figure concerns the Vizio matter; it is not a current fine and is not a finding about the other manufacturers.
Troubleshooting after opting out
An app disappeared or will not open
Check whether the TV is connected to the network, whether the app is still supported on that model, and whether you remain signed in. Re-enable only the specific optional service that the TV identifies as required; do not turn every privacy control back on by default. If the manufacturer says core apps remain available without optional services, contact its model-specific support channel when the behavior conflicts with that statement.
The home screen looks less personalized
That can be an expected consequence if its rows depended on ACR or another viewing-information service. Review the TV’s remaining personalization choices and then adjust each streaming app’s profile or history settings for in-app recommendations.

Disabling ACR does not prove that all telemetry, updates, diagnostics, voice processing, advertising, or device-discovery traffic has stopped. Review those controls individually. The ACM study’s limited scope also cautions against treating one ACR switch as a complete network-privacy guarantee.
You want old viewing records removed
Find the manufacturer’s data-deletion or privacy-request procedure and read its retention terms. Roku’s documented retention statement means that merely switching ACR off does not remove data collected earlier.
A practical privacy decision
Disable ACR if reducing television-platform viewing collection matters more to you than automatic program recognition and cross-app discovery. Leave it enabled if those features are central to how you find shows and you accept the associated data use. In either case, treat the TV platform and each streaming account as separate privacy decisions, verify the exact wording on your model, and test playback after changing the setting.
