Sometimes—but not simply because one player owns a PC. In fast shooters, a mouse and keyboard usually provide finer, faster camera control than a PS5 or Xbox controller. Console aim assist is designed to compensate for that difference, and developers may reduce aim assist, separate competitive pools, or match players by input. Whether PC has an unfair advantage therefore depends on the game’s rules, not the platform label alone.
What “advantage” means in cross-play
Cross-play puts players from different hardware ecosystems into the same online matches. The relevant comparison is usually not PC versus console hardware in the abstract; it is mouse-and-keyboard input versus controller input, together with each game’s matchmaking and aim-assist rules.
A PC player using a mouse can move the camera directly with their hand. A controller player moves a thumb stick through a limited range, then relies partly on software assistance to keep the reticle on a target. That difference matters most in games requiring rapid turns, small target corrections, recoil control and precise shots while moving.
It matters less in slower games, cooperative modes, genres that do not depend on precision aiming, or games that place different inputs in separate pools. A controller player can also outperform a mouse user through better positioning, game knowledge, movement and decision-making. Input advantage is real, but it is only one part of a match.

Why mouse and keyboard can be stronger in a fast shooter
Direct, fine-grained camera control
A mouse provides continuous movement across a surface. You can make a tiny correction for a head-level target or sweep quickly across a wide angle without waiting for a thumb stick to reach its physical limit. Riot Games described the competitive concern directly: console aim assist combined with a computer mouse’s ability “to flick across the screen with ease would easily outperform controller-based players.”
Keyboard keys also give discrete controls for movement, crouching, jumping and abilities. Experienced players can press several keys independently while keeping the mouse on a target. A controller offers analog movement and many functions on fewer controls, which can be comfortable but may require more thumb travel or button combinations.
Evidence from a small input study
A 2024 CHIRP workshop study tested 11 participants using three input methods. The computer mouse was the most accurate, followed by a standard Xbox controller. A gyroscope-enabled controller showed lower accuracy and slower reaction times in that test. The sample was small, so it cannot predict every player or every game, but it supports the mechanical explanation: a mouse can deliver more precise aiming for many tasks.

- High-speed first-person shooters with frequent close-range fights.
- Games where targets appear briefly or move unpredictably.
- Weapons that reward tiny recoil corrections and rapid flicks.
- Matches where players can turn quickly in any direction rather than follow predictable lanes.
These conditions do not guarantee a PC win. They simply give mouse users more precise control to convert reaction and tracking skill into hits.

How aim assist changes the equation
Thumb-stick aiming is less precise than a mouse for many tasks, so console games commonly apply aim assist. Electronic Arts explains that aim assist is automatically enabled for console players and for controller users on PC, with stronger assistance for console players. EA’s Apex Legends guidance says, “PC players using a mouse and keyboard can have an advantage over console players, so aim assist helps better balance the game.”
Aim assist is not one universal feature. A game may slow the reticle as it passes over a target, subtly pull toward a target, help track movement, or combine several behaviors. Strength can vary by platform, performance mode, input device and matchmaking pool. A controller player may therefore feel competitive in one title and disadvantaged in another.
Apex Legends’ published adjustments
In 2024, Electronic Arts said it reduced aim-assist strength in situations where controller players entered PC-facing matches. The published reductions were:

EA said the change followed data indicating that aim assist was too strong in the competitive ecosystem. The figures are EA’s 2024 figures, not a universal standard for all cross-play games. They illustrate why the same controller can feel different after entering a PC pool.

How developers balance mixed platforms
Games use several approaches instead of assuming every PC and console player should share one pool.
Separate competitive pools
Competitive modes may keep PC and console players apart even when casual playlists allow cross-play. Blizzard’s Overwatch cross-play FAQ stated: “For balance purposes, PC players and console players will not be mixed in the same pool for competitive matches.” This protects ranked competition from a platform difference that developers consider material.
Input-based matchmaking
A game can match controller users together and mouse-and-keyboard users together, regardless of whether the device is connected to a PC or console. Blizzard later described an Overwatch arrangement with a mouse-and-keyboard pool without aim assist and a controller pool. The exact implementation can change with updates, so check the current in-game explanation for the mode you are entering.

Some games leave aim assist active in ordinary console matches but reduce or disable it when a console player joins a PC group. Overwatch’s original FAQ said console aim assist was disabled by default when a console player grouped with a PC player. Apex instead published percentage reductions for PC-facing controller situations.

Routing by peripheral
Rainbow Six Siege gives controller users a console-only option while sending console players who use mouse and keyboard to the PC cross-play pool. This treats the input method as the relevant competitive factor: native mouse control is allowed, but it carries the same matchmaking consequences as PC mouse control.
Keeping cross-play out entirely
VALORANT does not implement console-to-PC cross-play and does not allow mouse and keyboard for console gameplay. Riot cited competitive-integrity concerns, including the possibility that a mouse could be combined with controller-style assistance. A game can therefore decide that the fairest solution is separate ecosystems rather than continuous balancing.
Is the PC advantage universal?
No. Use these five questions to evaluate a particular title instead of relying on platform stereotypes.

Hardware alone is therefore an incomplete comparison. A high-end PC running a mouse in an unrestricted pool may have a meaningful control advantage. A PC player using a controller in a controller pool may not. A console player with strong aim assist and excellent positioning can still win individual fights.

Should you turn cross-play off?
Disabling cross-play is a preference and queue-time trade-off, not a guaranteed fairness switch. Use the game’s own option if your priority is avoiding mouse users or mixed-platform parties, but first determine what the option actually excludes.
Turn it off when consistency matters most
- You are losing close-range aim duels and the game confirms that console players enter PC pools.
- The title does not reduce or disable aim assist when mixed matches occur.
- You play a ranked mode where platform or input separation is not already enforced.
- You prefer a smaller, more predictable pool and accept longer matchmaking times.
Leave it on when queue time and population matter
- The game uses input-based matchmaking or separate competitive pools.
- Aim assist is retained or tuned for the mixed playlist.
- Your friends use another platform and the social benefit outweighs a possible control disadvantage.
- The game’s population is small enough that disabling cross-play produces long waits or repeats the same opponents.
Check the setting after major patches. Developers can change pool routing, aim-assist values or which modes support cross-play.
Can you use a mouse and keyboard on PS5 or Xbox?
Only where the specific game and console support them. Native support does not mean you will remain in the controller pool. Rainbow Six Siege, for example, routes console mouse-and-keyboard users to the PC cross-play pool. Other games prohibit the setup, disable assistance, or do not offer console-to-PC cross-play at all, as with VALORANT.

Unauthorized adapters that make a mouse appear to be a controller are a separate issue. Riot identifies mouse-and-keyboard spoofing on console as a major competitive-integrity problem because it can combine mouse precision with controller aim assist. Blizzard likewise says unapproved peripherals can be treated as an unfair advantage and has proposed separate mouse-and-keyboard pools without aim assist.
Before using any adapter, read the game’s current rules. A device that works technically may still violate the terms of the competitive mode and may expose the account to enforcement. Native, explicitly supported input is the safer route.

A practical way to assess a game before you queue
- Identify the input you will use. Record whether you are playing mouse and keyboard, a standard controller or a controller with motion aiming. Do not compare “PC” and “console” without this detail.
- Open the game’s cross-play and controller menus. Look for labels such as input-based matchmaking, console pool, PC pool, mixed pool or aim assist in PC lobbies.
- Check the mode separately. Read the ranked, casual and special-event rules because one playlist may separate players while another mixes them.
- Confirm party behavior. Find out whether joining a friend on another platform moves the whole group into a PC pool or changes aim assist.
- Review peripheral rules. Distinguish native mouse-and-keyboard support from adapter-based spoofing, which may be prohibited.
- Run a controlled comparison. Play several matches with the same sensitivity, field of view and graphics settings. Compare target tracking and turn speed, not one unusually good or bad game.
- Recheck after updates. Patch notes can alter aim-assist strength, pool routing and supported devices.
What players should remember
- Mouse-and-keyboard aiming can be more precise, especially in fast shooters.
- Aim assist exists to compensate for controller limitations and can materially change the balance.
- Developers may separate pools, match by input, alter assistance or prohibit cross-play.
- Unauthorized input spoofing is treated as a competitive-integrity problem by major developers.
- The meaningful comparison is input method plus game rules—not hardware branding by itself.
