Yes. Phones sold by Cricket Wireless or an authorized Cricket retailer are SIM-locked to Cricket, so they cannot initially be used with another carrier—even if that carrier supports the phone. Cricket’s current unlock rules require six months of paid service for devices purchased before July 1, 2026, or 365 days of paid service for devices purchased on or after that date. Other eligibility conditions also apply.
What does “locked” mean?
Cricket’s terms state that a device bought from Cricket or an authorized retailer is programmed with a SIM lock that prevents it from operating with other compatible wireless carriers. This is a carrier restriction, not the phone’s screen passcode, a SIM PIN or PUK, or a physical SIM card. Cricket’s wireless terms, section 2.10.3, describe the lock.
How long do you have to wait to unlock a Cricket phone?
The minimum paid-service period depends on the device’s purchase date, not simply on when you submit the request. Cricket’s current Device Unlock support page states these thresholds:

These are Cricket’s published policy requirements, not a guarantee that every phone will qualify once the time has passed. Cricket says the device must be designed for its network, have an internet connection, and not be reported lost or stolen or associated with fraud. It also reserves discretion to reject requests it believes involve policy abuse or unlawful conduct. Because Cricket can change its policy, check the current support page before applying.

How do you request an unlock?
The method depends on the phone type and whether you are still a Cricket customer:
- Current customer with an iPhone: Use Cricket’s online device unlock process and sign in with your Cricket account credentials.
- Former customer with an iPhone: Contact Cricket by phone for instructions.
- Most Android phones: Start with the myCricket app.
- Certain Motorola or Cricket-branded devices launched in 2025 or later: Use the Cricket Device Unlock app.
- Android phones that do not work through the applicable app: Cricket says the request can be handled online.
After Cricket confirms the unlock, restart the phone. For help with an expedited unlock before military deployment, Cricket directs service members to call 1-800-CRICKET or dial 611 from a Cricket phone; the support page does not promise an automatic waiver or a specific turnaround time.

Can you use a Cricket phone with another carrier?
Only after the carrier lock is removed—and only if the phone is compatible with the destination carrier’s network. Unlocking removes Cricket’s SIM restriction; it does not guarantee that every phone model or feature will work elsewhere. Check the destination carrier’s compatibility requirements before switching.
Can you bring a locked phone to Cricket?
No. A phone you want to bring to Cricket must already be unlocked and compatible with Cricket’s HD Voice network. Those are separate checks: a phone can be unlocked but incompatible, or compatible but still locked to another carrier. Cricket’s model list is not exhaustive, so use its phone compatibility information and IMEI check to verify a specific device. Inserting a Cricket SIM does not unlock a phone.
