Yes. Cloud gaming can use several gigabytes per hour because your device continuously receives a compressed video stream of the game. At a sustained 10 Mbps, the transfer is about 4.5 decimal GB per hour; at 20 Mbps it is about 9 GB; and at 65 Mbps it is about 29.25 GB. Those are rate-based estimates before protocol overhead, not a guaranteed reading on every device or game.
Whether that amount is “a lot” depends on your service’s quality setting, how long you play, and whether your broadband or mobile plan has a data cap. The practical risk is greatest on LTE or capped plans: Xbox Cloud Gaming’s published 10 Mbps minimum already equates to roughly 4.5 GB for every hour the connection stays at that rate.
What determines cloud-gaming data use?
Unlike a locally installed game, cloud gaming renders the game on a remote server and sends the resulting video to your screen. Your controller, keyboard or touch input travels back to the server, but the continuous video stream is the main source of data consumption. The stream’s bitrate can change while you play, so a service’s bandwidth requirement is a useful planning figure rather than a promise that every session will consume exactly that amount.
Resolution and frame rate
More pixels and more frames require more video information. A 1080p stream generally needs less bandwidth than 4K, and 60 frames per second generally needs less than 120 or 240 frames per second at the same resolution. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements illustrate the range: 15 Mbps for HD, 25 Mbps for FHD, 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, 55 Mbps for QHD or FHD at 240/360 FPS, and 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS.

Bitrate, quality mode and scene complexity
Services compress the video stream. A quiet menu can compress more efficiently than a fast scene with smoke, foliage or rapidly changing camera movement. Automatic quality modes may raise or lower bitrate to keep the stream playable. Two sessions at the same nominal resolution can therefore transfer different amounts of data.
Device and connection conditions
Xbox says streaming performance is affected by the internet connection, user location, device and other factors. Congestion, Wi-Fi interference and server distance can trigger quality changes or interruptions. A faster connection improves the available headroom, but it does not automatically make the service use less data; the selected stream quality and bitrate are the primary drivers.
How many gigabytes does cloud gaming use per hour?
The following figures convert a sustained data rate to decimal gigabytes with this calculation: Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. They represent the raw transfer implied by the published rate, before protocol overhead and normal variation.

These are decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Your provider may display usage in decimal gigabytes or binary gibibytes, and network overhead can make the meter slightly higher. No universal official “GB per hour” figure is published by the services discussed here; the hourly values are transparent calculations from their stated Mbps guidance.
What Xbox Cloud Gaming’s requirement means for your data plan
Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements list a 10 Mbps minimum download speed for a Wi-Fi or LTE data connection. Microsoft also notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps for the best quality. At a sustained 10 Mbps, the calculation above is about 4.5 GB per hour; at 20 Mbps it is about 9 GB per hour.

How quickly a mobile allowance can disappear
The table below applies the 10 Mbps and 20 Mbps estimates to common play patterns. It assumes the stream remains at that rate for the entire session and excludes other phone traffic such as video, backups and app updates.

| 1 hour per day for 30 days | 135 GB | 270 GB |
| 2 hours per day for 30 days | 270 GB | 540 GB |
A 5 GB mobile allowance would theoretically cover only about 1.1 hours at 10 Mbps (5 ÷ 4.5), and a 20 GB allowance about 4.4 hours. Real usage can be lower or higher because the stream is adaptive, but these calculations show why a capped mobile plan can be exhausted quickly. Xbox supports LTE/mobile data, so check your carrier’s allowance before using a phone hotspot or cellular connection for long sessions.
Why 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Ethernet still matter
Xbox recommends a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and wired Ethernet where possible. Those options can reduce interference and improve stability, which helps prevent stalls and sudden quality drops. They do not reduce the amount of data required by a given bitrate: a 20 Mbps stream remains approximately 9 GB per hour whether it arrives over a stable wired link or stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

How much data GeForce NOW can require
NVIDIA publishes separate bandwidth guidance for GeForce NOW quality targets. The figures below are requirements for the named output, not a promise that every game will run at that exact rate or that your usage meter will match the calculation.
| GeForce NOW target | Published bandwidth | Calculated transfer per hour |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 15 Mbps | About 6.75 GB |
| FHD | 25 Mbps | About 11.25 GB |
| QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps | About 15.75 GB |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps | About 20.25 GB |
| QHD or FHD at 240/360 FPS | 55 Mbps | About 24.75 GB |
| 5K at 120 FPS | 65 Mbps | About 29.25 GB |
At the top end, a two-hour 5K/120 FPS session corresponds to roughly 58.5 GB before overhead. At the HD requirement, the same two hours corresponds to about 13.5 GB. If your plan has a monthly cap, selecting a lower resolution or frame-rate target can have a larger effect than changing from one Wi-Fi band to another.

Cloud gaming versus downloading a game
Installing a conventional game can consume a large one-time download, followed by comparatively small play-session traffic. Cloud gaming reverses that pattern: you avoid the initial installation on the local device, but every minute of play requires a continuing video stream. For someone who plays occasionally on an uncapped home connection, that trade-off may be convenient. For someone with a small monthly allowance, repeated streaming sessions can exceed the size of a one-time download within days.
How to estimate your own monthly usage
- Identify the service and target quality. Use the provider’s published requirement: Xbox lists 10 Mbps minimum and says some devices may need 20 Mbps; GeForce NOW lists 15 to 65 Mbps depending on resolution and frame rate.
- Convert the rate to hourly data. Multiply Mbps by 0.45 to obtain an approximate decimal GB per hour. For example, 25 Mbps × 0.45 = 11.25 GB/hour.
- Multiply by session length. A 90-minute session at 25 Mbps is 11.25 × 1.5, or about 16.9 GB.
- Multiply by your schedule. For four 90-minute sessions each week at 25 Mbps, the estimate is about 67.5 GB per week and roughly 270 GB over four weeks.
- Add headroom. Allow extra capacity for protocol overhead, adaptive bitrate changes and all other devices sharing the plan. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a billable guarantee.
Ways to control data use without making cloud gaming unusable
Choose a lower stream target
If your service exposes resolution, frame-rate or quality controls, lowering one of them reduces the bitrate ceiling. Moving from a 45 Mbps 4K/120 FPS target to a 25 Mbps FHD target changes the calculated rate from about 20.25 GB/hour to 11.25 GB/hour. The trade-off is less image detail or motion smoothness.
Reserve high-quality play for unmetered broadband
Use home broadband for long sessions and avoid high-resolution cellular streaming when your allowance is limited. Xbox’s LTE support means mobile play is possible, but the 10 Mbps minimum alone can represent about 4.5 GB for each sustained hour.
Measure the connection separately from the data cap
A speed test tells you whether the connection can meet a requirement; it does not tell you how many gigabytes remain in your plan. Check the carrier or broadband provider’s usage dashboard, and monitor the device’s per-app statistics where available. Reset the device’s usage counter at the start of a billing cycle if you need a session-specific comparison.
Improve stability first
Follow the services’ advice to use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Place the router close to the gaming device, reduce competing high-bandwidth activity during play, and avoid relying on a congested 2.4 GHz network when a 5 GHz signal is available. These steps address latency and interruptions; they are not substitutes for an adequate data allowance.
Does PlayStation cloud streaming use data?
PlayStation Plus Premium supports cloud streaming for select PS5 games, with saves stored in the cloud. Streaming a game through that feature has the same basic data pattern as other cloud services: the device receives ongoing gameplay video rather than reading all game assets from local storage. Sony’s service page does not provide a single universal GB-per-hour figure in the information considered here, so use the service’s displayed quality settings and your own usage meter rather than applying Xbox or GeForce NOW rates as a guarantee.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes when planning a capped connection
- Confusing Mbps with MB or GB. Mbps is megabits per second; eight bits make one byte. That is why 10 Mbps converts to about 4.5 GB per hour, not 10 GB.
- Treating a minimum as an average. Xbox’s 10 Mbps figure is a minimum download requirement. A session can use a different bitrate, especially when quality adapts.
- Ignoring frame rate. A 4K stream at 120 FPS has a substantially higher published requirement than HD. Compare the complete resolution-and-frame-rate target.
- Assuming better Wi-Fi lowers consumption. Ethernet and 5 GHz Wi-Fi improve reliability. They do not change the bitrate selected by the service.
- Planning only for game time. Include other household or phone traffic, operating-system updates and streaming video when checking whether a cap is sufficient.
What to do if the stream stutters or the cap is nearly reached
- Check whether the device is on the intended network and, where possible, switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Run a speed test at the gaming location, not only beside the router.
- Lower the cloud service’s resolution, frame rate or quality mode and retest.
- Pause other heavy downloads and uploads during the session.
- Review the provider’s usage meter and remaining allowance before starting another long session.
- If the cap remains the limiting factor, move extended play to an uncapped connection or choose locally installed games for offline sessions.
The practical answer for different plans
| Your situation | What the estimates imply |
|---|---|
| Uncapped home broadband | Data volume is usually less important than meeting the service’s speed and latency needs. Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi can improve consistency. |
| Moderate monthly broadband cap | Track play hours and select a quality target whose hourly estimate fits alongside all other household use. |
| Small mobile allowance | Cloud gaming can consume the allowance rapidly; 10 Mbps is already about 4.5 GB per sustained hour. |
| High-resolution or high-frame-rate GeForce NOW | Published requirements range up to 65 Mbps, or about 29.25 GB per hour before overhead, so an uncapped connection is preferable. |
