No. Checking your own credit score or credit report does not lower your score. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) classifies a self-request as a soft inquiry, not an application for new credit. A lender’s report request after you apply is usually a hard inquiry, which can affect scoring models.
The distinction depends on who requested the report and why—not on whether you looked at a score through a bank app, requested a report yourself, or spoke with a lender. Here is how each type works, when rate shopping is grouped, and how to check your records without accidentally authorizing a credit application.
The short answer: your own check is a soft inquiry
When you request your own credit report or view your own score, the action is not treated as an application for new credit. It does not reduce your score. The CFPB states on its consumer page “Does requesting my credit report hurt my credit score?” (last reviewed May 14, 2024): “Checking your own credit report is not an inquiry about new credit, so it has no effect on your score.”

The same principle applies whether you obtain a report directly, use a legitimate financial-account dashboard, or access a score supplied as part of a consumer service. The act of looking is not the event that scoring models associate with seeking new credit.

A hard inquiry is different. It normally occurs after you authorize a lender or other creditor to obtain your report while evaluating an application. Hard inquiries are recorded on the report and scoring models may consider their recency and frequency. One can affect a score, although the effect depends on the scoring model and the rest of the person’s credit profile.
Hard and soft inquiries compared
A credit inquiry is a request to view a credit report for a stated purpose, such as evaluating credit, housing, employment, or insurance. The table shows the practical distinction.
| Question | Hard inquiry | Soft inquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Who usually starts it? | A lender or creditor after you apply or otherwise authorize a credit evaluation. | You, an existing account provider, or a company conducting an authorized prescreening or account review. |
| Why is the report requested? | To decide whether to approve new credit, such as a card, auto loan, mortgage, student loan, or other consumer loan. | To let you inspect your records, manage an existing account, or identify people who may qualify for a prescreened offer. |
| Can it affect a score? | Yes. Scoring models may take the timing and number of applications into account. | No. A soft inquiry does not affect your score. |
| Who can see it? | It appears in the version of your report used by creditors and is visible when those parties obtain the appropriate report. | It is generally shown to you, but not to other companies purchasing your report for credit decisions. |
| Typical examples | A submitted credit-card application, auto-loan application, mortgage application, or other new-credit request. | Your own report request, an existing lender’s account review, or a prescreening check. |
The categories describe the usual purpose. A company’s exact process and the report it obtains still matter, so read the authorization language before proceeding.
How a hard inquiry gets created
Most hard inquiries follow an application workflow:
- You submit information for new credit. This may be a full application or another step that asks the creditor to evaluate you for a product.
- You authorize access to a credit report. The application’s consent language usually explains that the creditor may obtain consumer-report information.
- The creditor requests the report. That request is recorded as a hard inquiry associated with the creditor and the application purpose.
- The scoring model processes the inquiry with other data. The model may consider how recently and how often you have applied, along with the other information in your credit file.
Asking a lender for general rates is not automatically an application. CFPB guidance says that if you are simply asking about rates, the lender cannot pull your report. A preapproval, formal application, or other authorization to access the report is a different event. Before clicking “apply,” submitting a preapproval form, or accepting a consent screen, look for wording that permits a credit-report pull.

Why hard inquiries can affect scores
Scoring models use inquiries as one signal of recent credit-seeking activity. Several applications close together can indicate that a person is seeking substantial new credit, so a model may treat that pattern differently from a single isolated application. The model, the type of inquiry, and the information already in the credit file determine the result.
There is no single guaranteed point deduction that applies to everyone. The CFPB’s explanation is intentionally conditional: hard inquiries “can” affect scores, while soft inquiries do not. A lender may also use a version of a score that differs from the score a consumer sees in an app. For that reason, do not assume that a displayed score will move by a fixed amount after an application, or that every creditor uses the same calculation.

Rate shopping: when several inquiries may be grouped
Comparing offers for the same loan type can produce multiple lender checks. CFPB guidance describes a general grouping window of 14 to 45 days for same-type mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries, depending on the scoring model. Within the applicable window, a model may treat the inquiries as a single rate-shopping event rather than as separate applications.
The guidance is not a universal promise. Models differ, the window can be shorter or longer within that 14-to-45-day range, and the rule concerns inquiries for the same type of loan. Applying for a mortgage, an auto loan, and a credit card during the same period does not turn those different products into one inquiry category.

Common models also have a separate protective feature: CFPB guidance notes that specified mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries made during the 30 days before scoring are commonly disregarded. That does not mean every model or every creditor will implement the rule identically, so treat it as general guidance rather than a guarantee.

|---|---|---|
| Loan type | Grouping applies to same-type mortgage, auto, or student-loan inquiries. | Different kinds of credit are not automatically grouped. |
| Time between inquiries | A model-dependent window is generally 14 to 45 days. | There is no single deadline that works for every score. |
| Very recent inquiries | Common models may disregard specified inquiries in the 30 days before scoring. | Every scoring model will not necessarily use the same treatment. |
| Application pattern | Keeping same-loan comparisons inside a short window is the safest approach. | Shopping outside the relevant window may be treated as multiple inquiries. |
To reduce uncertainty, gather quotes first, then submit applications for the same loan type within the shortest practical period. Ask each lender whether the quote requires a credit pull and what kind of authorization you are giving.
How to check your reports and scores safely
You can monitor your credit without creating a hard inquiry. The CFPB identifies AnnualCreditReport.com as the official no-cost route for reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Its guidance says consumers can request reports online weekly from each of those three nationwide consumer reporting companies.
- Open the official report-access route. Use AnnualCreditReport.com rather than a link supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Select the reporting company. You may request a report from Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, or all three.
- Complete the identity-verification questions. The reporting company uses these questions to confirm that the request is yours.
- Review the report sections. Check personal-information fields, accounts, payment history, balances, and the inquiry section for entries you do not recognize.
- Save a dated copy for comparison. Keeping your own records makes it easier to notice changes on a later visit.
- Check a score separately if needed. A report and a score are related but different products; a page that provides a free report does not necessarily include every score version a lender may use.
The CFPB also describes an additional Equifax free-copy allowance available through December 2026. That date-bound availability should be verified when you request the report because allowances and access terms can change.
Requesting a report from any of the three companies, or checking a score supplied to you, is a consumer-initiated soft inquiry. Neither action itself lowers the score.

Report versus score: what you are actually checking
A credit report is the underlying record: identifying information, accounts, balances, payment history, and inquiry entries. A credit score is a number calculated from information in a report using a particular scoring model and version.
Because lenders can use different models, a score you see as a consumer may not match the score a lender orders. That difference does not mean your self-check caused a drop. It means the two parties may be looking at different scoring formulas, data snapshots, or product-specific versions.
When you monitor your score, record the date and the source. When you monitor your report, compare all three reporting companies because the files may not update on the same schedule or contain identical information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who can see each type of inquiry?
Soft inquiries are generally visible to you in the inquiry portion of your report but are not shown to companies that purchase the report for credit decisions. This allows account reviews and prescreening activity to be recorded without turning routine monitoring into a credit-seeking signal.

Hard inquiries are associated with applications and appear on the report a creditor receives in the relevant report view. If you are reviewing an application decision, look for the creditor name and date of each hard inquiry. The entry can help you distinguish a legitimate application from a check you did not authorize.

An inquiry entry by itself does not prove that an account was opened. It records that a report was requested. A separate account entry, if any, shows whether the creditor ultimately reported a new account.
Common situations and the correct classification
You open a score in a banking app
This is a self-view of a score and does not lower it. The app may refresh the number on a schedule, so a later change can reflect updated account data or a different score calculation rather than the act of opening the screen.
You download your report before applying for a mortgage
The download is a soft inquiry. It lets you check for errors before a lender evaluates the mortgage. The mortgage application itself can produce a hard inquiry once you authorize the lender to obtain your report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou call a lender to ask about rates
A general rate question is not the same as an application. CFPB guidance says the lender cannot pull your report merely because you are asking about rates. Do not provide application consent unless you are ready for the lender to evaluate you.
You request a formal preapproval
Preapproval commonly involves an evaluation of your creditworthiness and may require a hard inquiry. Read the lender’s disclosure to determine whether the preapproval uses a hard or soft pull; the label “preapproval” alone is not enough to classify it.
Your existing lender reviews your account
An existing lender may review your report for account-management purposes. CFPB guidance treats that type of review as a soft inquiry, so it does not affect the score.
You receive a prescreened offer
Prescreening is an example of a soft inquiry. It does not affect your score and is generally not shown to other companies buying your report for credit decisions.
Practical mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a score page with an application page. A “check your eligibility” or “apply now” flow may request authorization for a lender pull even when it first displays an estimated offer.
- Assuming every prequalification is soft. Ask whether the process uses a soft or hard inquiry before submitting personal information.
- Submitting rate-shopping applications over an unlimited period. The grouping rule is model-dependent and generally limited to 14 to 45 days for the same loan type.
- Mixing loan categories. Mortgage, auto, student-loan, and credit-card inquiries are not one universal rate-shopping group.
- Treating a consumer report as the same thing as a lender score. Your report is the data record; the score depends on the model and version applied to it.
- Ignoring unfamiliar inquiry names. Compare the name and date with applications you remember. If an entry does not match anything you authorized, contact the listed creditor and the reporting company for an explanation.
- Relying on an outdated access allowance. Free-report policies can change; the additional Equifax allowance described by the CFPB is stated through December 2026.
A simple decision rule before you click
- Are you only viewing your own report or score? That is a soft inquiry and does not lower the score.
- Is a company evaluating you for new credit? Expect that a hard inquiry may be requested and may affect scoring.
- Are you comparing mortgages, auto loans, or student loans? Keep same-type applications close together and within the model-dependent 14-to-45-day guidance window.
- Are you merely asking for a rate? Ask whether the conversation requires a report pull; a general rate question alone should not authorize one.
- Does the consent language remain unclear? Stop and ask the provider which bureau will be checked, whether the inquiry is hard or soft, and whether you are submitting an application.
Scope of this guidance
These definitions and access instructions are U.S. consumer guidance from the CFPB. The broad distinction between hard and soft inquiries is stable, but scoring-model implementation, report-access allowances, and lender workflows can change. The CFPB’s mortgage-checking page was last reviewed August 28, 2026; its self-report page was last reviewed May 14, 2024. Check the current wording at the time you apply, especially for rate-shopping windows and time-limited free-report provisions.
