No. Replacing a nozzle or print core changes the printer’s hardware, but it does not automatically remove the melted filament already in a single-nozzle melt zone. When you switch color or material, the incoming filament pushes the old material out, so some purging is normally required for a clean transition.
Waste can be reduced with slicer settings, infill or sacrificial objects, and hardware that uses separate tools or nozzles. The amount saved depends on the specific printer, transition, material pair and purge strategy—not simply on whether the nozzle is replaceable.
Nozzle replacement and filament changing are different operations
A nozzle swap is a hardware change. You may install a larger or smaller orifice, replace a worn nozzle, or fit a print core designed for a different material. UltiMaker describes a print core as a compact hot end containing the nozzle, heater block, heater and sensor; its printer guides the operator through exchanging that core without tools. That procedure changes the component used to extrude plastic.
Recommended Free Tools
A filament change is a material transition. The printer unloads one filament and loads another, often while the hot end remains hot. Plastic that has already melted is still inside the nozzle and adjoining melt path. Loading the new filament pushes that residue toward the tip. Unless the colors and materials are compatible and contamination is acceptable, the printer must extrude some material before it can resume a clean-looking wall.

Changing a nozzle can therefore be useful for reliability or for printing a different type of material, but it is not a cleaning cycle. A newly installed nozzle can still contain the filament that was loaded during installation, and a single nozzle still has one shared melt zone for every material it processes.
Why a single nozzle produces purge waste
What remains inside the melt path
Prusa’s MMU documentation states that “during a filament change, a small amount of melted plastic remains in the nozzle.” As the new filament is loaded, it melts and pushes the old nozzle content out. The extrusion at first is a blend, so a visible color change occurs gradually rather than at one exact instant.
The volume needed to reach an acceptable color or material purity varies with nozzle geometry, melt-zone length, temperature, extrusion rate and the two filaments. Dark pigment loaded before a light filament can remain visible for longer than a light-to-dark transition. Materials with different processing temperatures or additives can also require a more conservative purge to avoid contamination or poor bonding.
Why simply installing another nozzle does not solve it
If the printer has one hot end, switching from nozzle A to nozzle B does not give each material an independent melt path. During a physical nozzle replacement, the old filament may remain in the heat break, heater block or new nozzle until it is extruded. During a color change, the same shared path is used even when the nozzle itself is new. The hardware operation and the purge operation address separate problems.
How printers manage the displaced material
Manufacturers and slicers use several strategies. Each trades material savings against color purity, surface appearance, time or setup complexity.

Purge or wipe tower
A tower is a sacrificial structure printed beside the model. At a transition, the printer deposits the mixed extrusion into the tower until the flow is stable. PrusaSlicer’s smart wipe tower sizes the tower according to the required purge and can use sparse infill, reducing the plastic compared with a fully solid tower. The tower is dependable for demanding color changes, but it consumes filament and adds print time. It also occupies build-plate area and can become unstable on a long job.
Wipe into infill
PrusaSlicer can route some purge into an object’s infill. Because the material is hidden inside the part, less plastic is dedicated to a visible tower. This works best when the infill is sufficiently dense to encapsulate the mixed material and when internal color is unimportant. It is not a free reduction: the slicer must still extrude enough to stabilize the color, and the part’s internal strength or appearance can change if the mixed material is poorly bonded.
Wipe into another object
With more than one object on the plate, residual material can be deposited into a designated sacrificial object. This may nearly eliminate a separate tower, but the receiving object will contain mixed colors and may not be usable as a finished part. The method is practical when a purge block, calibration piece or support component has value after printing.
Reduced purge volumes
PrusaSlicer provides a purge-volume matrix with values for individual filament transitions. Lowering a transition’s value can save material, but an aggressive reduction may leave streaks, weak interfaces or the previous material in the nozzle. Tune one transition at a time and judge the first layers and color-critical surfaces; do not assume one number works for every filament pair.
When multi-tool hardware changes the waste calculation
Printers with multiple tool heads, dedicated nozzles or tool-changing mechanisms can avoid forcing every material through one shared nozzle. That can remove the need for a conventional purge tower in some jobs, but “no tower” is not the same as “no waste.” A parked tool can ooze, require a priming deposit or need a brief pressure-stabilizing purge before printing.

Original Prusa XL
Prusa says the Original Prusa XL can print true multi-material jobs without a purge or wipe tower. This statement applies to the XL’s multi-tool configuration and its operating conditions; it is not a universal claim about every toolchanger. The company’s guidance also emphasizes dry filament. Moisture is identified as a main cause of filament leaking from a preheated nozzle while the tool travels or remains parked. Drying filament can reduce that leakage mechanism, but it does not clear old material from a single nozzle during a normal filament swap.

INDX pressure-stabilizing purge
Prusa’s INDX product documentation reports approximately 13 milligrams (0.013 grams) purged per material change and describes a purge collector and nozzle wiper. The figure is a manufacturer-published claim; the page does not state a publication year, and it is not an independent test or a general measurement for nozzle changes. Even with a dedicated or swappable tool, the small purge exists to stabilize pressure and control residue.
MMU3 single-nozzle changes
Prusa reports average MMU3 filament-change times of 35 to 45 seconds; the product page does not state a publication year. MMU3 uses a shared nozzle, so it purges residual filament to limit color contamination. Its documented options include wiping into infill and wiping into another object. The time figure describes the manufacturer’s average change operation, not the mass wasted and not a guarantee for every printer, filament or temperature profile.
What can and cannot be compared
Official product pages document particular designs, while independent head-to-head measurements are not established here. Compare the following attributes rather than ranking one architecture as universally waste-free.
| System or method | Material path | Waste behavior documented by the manufacturer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single nozzle with a purge tower | One shared melt zone | Mixed material is extruded into a tower until the transition is acceptable | Required purge varies by transition; tower can use sparse infill |
| Single nozzle with wipe-to-infill | One shared melt zone | Some purge is hidden in the model’s infill | Can affect internal color, bonding or strength; tower may still be needed |
| Single nozzle with wipe-to-object | One shared melt zone | Residual material goes into another object | Receiving object may have mixed colors and be sacrificial |
| Original Prusa XL multi-tool setup | Separate tools/nozzles | Prusa states that a purge or wipe tower is not required for true multi-material prints | Claim is specific to the XL configuration; moisture-related leakage remains possible |
| Prusa INDX | Swappable or dedicated tool design | Approximately 13 mg (0.013 g) per material change, according to Prusa | Manufacturer figure, year not stated, and not an independent comparison |
| Prusa MMU3 | One shared nozzle with automated filament handling | Average change time 35–45 seconds; residual filament is purged | Manufacturer average, year not stated; waste depends on purge settings |
| Exchangeable UltiMaker print core | Replaceable hot end containing nozzle, heater and sensor | Hardware can be exchanged without tools | Core replacement itself does not purge a previous color from a shared melt path |
There is no established universal waste number for “changing a nozzle.” A meaningful measurement would need to specify the printer, nozzle, material pair, temperature, transition count, purge settings and whether the test counts priming or leakage.

How to reduce waste on a current single-nozzle printer
1. Identify the transition that needs tuning
List every color or material change in the job. A black-to-white transition generally deserves more purge than two similar shades, while a material change may require a conservative setting for adhesion and contamination reasons. Treat each direction as separate: white-to-black and black-to-white do not necessarily need the same volume.
2. Set a transition-specific purge volume
- Open the filament or multi-material settings in your slicer and locate the purge-volume matrix.
- Select the row for the outgoing filament and the column for the incoming filament.
- Reduce the value in small increments, keeping a record of the original setting.
- Slice a short test containing the same transition and inspect the first layers and any color-critical walls.
- Restore or increase the value if the old color remains visible, the extrusion is inconsistent or the material interface is weak.
The goal is the lowest volume that gives the required result, not the lowest number on screen. A setting that saves a few grams but ruins a finished part is false economy.
3. Choose where the purge goes
- Enable the smart wipe tower when you need predictable external color purity.
- Enable wipe-to-infill when the part’s interior can tolerate mixed material.
- Assign wipe-to-object to a sacrificial or useful secondary object when one is available.
- Check the sliced preview to confirm that the purge is actually routed as intended and that the tower remains stable.
These options reduce dedicated waste; they do not make the shared melt zone empty. Some transitions still need a tower, especially when the outside surface must be clean.
4. Keep materials in the condition the printer expects
Dry filament helps prevent bubbling, inconsistent flow and, on the Original Prusa XL, moisture-related leakage from a preheated parked nozzle. Follow the filament manufacturer’s drying temperature and time guidance for the specific polymer. Drying is a response to moisture; it is not a replacement for purge volume when old color or material remains in a single nozzle.
5. Validate with a small test before a long print
Use a short transition test with the same nozzle diameter, layer height, temperature and material pair as the production job. Measure the discarded purge if you need a repeatable process, and record the result with the slicer profile. This creates a useful per-transition baseline without pretending that one printer’s value applies to another.

Common misconceptions and failure modes
“A larger nozzle wastes less because it changes faster”
Nozzle diameter can change extrusion rate and the volume of plastic in the tip, but changing the diameter does not remove old material from the melt path. Any waste difference must be measured for the complete hot end and transition procedure.
“A new nozzle means the next color starts clean”
Only a properly cleared melt path starts clean. If filament was loaded during installation or remains in the heat break, the first extrusion from the new nozzle can still contain it. Extrude and inspect a controlled amount before a color-critical print.
“No purge tower means zero waste”
A system can avoid a tower while still depositing a priming line, collecting ooze, wiping a nozzle or performing a small pressure-stabilizing purge. The XL statement concerns the tower, while the INDX documentation reports a small purge per change; those claims are compatible because they describe different waste streams.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Lowering purge volume only affects color”
Insufficient purging can also leave incompatible material in the nozzle, alter flow and weaken an interface. If a transition involves different polymers or processing temperatures, prioritize the material manufacturer’s compatibility and temperature guidance over a cosmetic saving.
“Wet filament can be fixed by increasing purge”
More purge may hide a color transition, but it does not remove moisture from filament. Dry the material when moisture is the suspected cause, and then tune purge for the remaining color or material residue.
Which approach fits a particular goal?
- Lowest equipment change: Keep the existing single-nozzle printer and tune the purge matrix, then route waste into infill or a sacrificial object where the part allows it.
- Most predictable external color: Use a conventional purge or wipe tower and accept its material and time cost.
- Less shared-path contamination: Consider a multi-tool or dedicated-nozzle design, checking the exact printer’s priming, wiping and leakage behavior.
- Material-sensitive production: Favor a validated transition profile and sufficient purge over an aggressive saving that could compromise bonding or nozzle reliability.
- XL tower-free printing: Follow the XL-specific multi-tool guidance and keep filament dry; do not generalize that result to every toolchanger.
Before buying hardware, compare residual purge mass per transition, tower requirements, transition time, contamination control, slicer routing options, compatible printer models and the total system cost. The available manufacturer figures are product-specific, not an independent ranking.
The practical answer
Changing a nozzle is a maintenance or configuration task, not an automatic filament-waste solution. On a single-nozzle printer, melted residue remains and must be displaced when the next filament enters. You can reduce the amount by tuning transition-specific purge volumes and directing the purge into infill or another object, but those choices carry appearance, strength and reliability trade-offs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMulti-tool and dedicated-nozzle systems can avoid a conventional wipe tower in particular configurations, yet they may still prime, wipe or purge small amounts. Treat every advertised figure as specific to the named printer and setup, and distinguish “no purge tower” from “no waste.”
