No. Changing an iPhone icon’s appearance does not, by itself, disable notifications, remove the app, or stop it receiving updates. The important exception is that a custom picture added through Shortcuts creates a separate Home Screen shortcut, and Apple’s instructions do not promise that this shortcut will display the underlying app’s notification badge. The original app remains responsible for alerts, badges and updates.
First, identify which kind of icon change you made
“Changing an icon” can describe three different actions. They have different effects because one is a visual setting, one creates a shortcut, and one is performed by the app’s developer.

Keeping these cases separate prevents most confusion. A tinted icon is still the app. A Shortcuts tile is an additional route to the app. A developer’s icon change is software shipped through the App Store.

Apple’s current iPhone guide documents Home Screen controls for changing icon size, choosing a light or dark appearance, applying a clear appearance and applying a tint. These controls alter how icons are rendered on the Home Screen; they do not replace the installed application or change its notification permission.

Because the underlying app is unchanged, the operating system continues to deliver its notifications according to the app’s settings. Scheduled updates, automatic updates and manual updates also continue to use the installed app. Applying a tint is not an installation, deletion or update operation.
To use these controls, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, choose Customize, and select the appearance option you want. The exact choices can vary with the iOS release and device, so use Apple’s current instructions for the labels shown on your phone: Customize apps and widgets on the iPhone Home Screen.
If an alert disappears after a visual change, treat that as a notification-settings or delivery problem rather than evidence that the tint or size control switched notifications off.
A custom photo made with Shortcuts is a separate Home Screen tile
Shortcuts handles custom images differently. Apple’s instructions let you add a shortcut to the Home Screen and choose a photo from Photos or a file for the shortcut’s icon. The result is a shortcut tile, not a replacement of the app’s internal icon asset.

In practical terms, the tile points to a shortcut. Tapping it can open the app or run an action, while the real app remains installed elsewhere on the device. You can therefore have both the original app icon and a custom shortcut, or remove the original icon from the Home Screen without deleting the app.
How to add a custom shortcut icon
- Open the Shortcuts app and select or create the shortcut you want to launch.
- Open the shortcut’s details or share controls and choose Add to Home Screen.
- Tap the icon preview, choose a photo from Photos or a file from Files, and enter the Home Screen name.
- Tap Add. iOS places the new shortcut tile on the Home Screen.
Apple’s documentation explains this creation process but does not explicitly state that notification badges from the underlying app are copied onto the custom tile. Do not rely on a custom tile as a guaranteed badge indicator. If seeing a badge is important, keep the original app icon available or check Notification Center and the app itself.
The shortcut does not create a second installation. Removing the shortcut removes that Home Screen route; it does not delete the underlying app. Deleting the app, by contrast, is a separate action and can remove its locally stored data depending on the app.
Notifications, alerts and badges are different things
“Notifications” can mean an alert on the Lock Screen, a banner while you use the phone, a sound or vibration, or the red numeric badge on an icon. These are related but independently controlled parts of the notification system.
Alerts and banners
Alerts are generated by the installed app and governed by its notification permission and delivery settings. A Home Screen appearance change does not grant, revoke or rewrite those permissions. If alerts stop, open Settings and inspect the notification controls for the actual app, including whether notifications are allowed and which delivery locations are enabled. Also check Focus or other system modes that may silence or delay alerts.

Notification Center
Notification Center is a useful test because it separates delivery from Home Screen artwork. If a message appears in Notification Center but no red badge is visible on your chosen tile, the notification arrived; the issue is badge presentation or the tile you are watching, not necessarily delivery.
Badges on the original app icon
The original app icon is the clearest place to expect the app’s badge when badges are enabled for that app. A custom Shortcuts tile may launch the same app, but Apple’s cited Shortcuts guide does not guarantee that it mirrors the app’s badge count. Avoid assuming that a missing badge on a custom image means the app missed a notification.
What happens when you remove an app from the Home Screen?
Removing an icon from the Home Screen is not the same as deleting the app. iPhone can keep the installed app in App Library, where it remains available and can continue receiving notifications and updates.
Apple provides a separate App Library control for badge visibility. In Settings, open Home Screen & App Library and enable Show in App Library if you want badges displayed for apps that are no longer on a Home Screen page. This setting concerns badges in App Library. It does not establish that a custom Shortcuts tile will show the same badge. If you depend on a badge, leave the original app icon on a Home Screen page or use App Library with its badge option enabled.

App updates are tied to the installed app and the App Store account, not to the picture displayed on a Home Screen tile. Tinting an icon, changing its size or adding a shortcut does not turn off automatic updates and does not block manual updates.

To update an app manually, open the App Store, tap your account picture, and review available updates. The app must still be installed; a removed Home Screen icon is harmless because the app can remain in App Library. If the app is genuinely deleted, it cannot update until you install it again.
A Shortcuts tile also does not become an independently updateable copy. Updating the underlying app updates the app that the shortcut opens. The shortcut may continue to point to it, although a shortcut can fail for reasons unrelated to icon appearance, such as a deleted action or changed app permissions.

A developer’s official icon change is a release, not a Home Screen customization
There is a separate situation in which the app’s shipped icon really does change: the developer publishes a new app version. Apple’s App Store Connect documentation says the app icon appears in system locations, including notifications, and that changing a published icon requires the developer to create and upload a new app version and submit it for review: Add an app icon — App Store Connect Help.
That process is controlled by the developer and Apple’s review and distribution system. It is not triggered when you tint an icon, choose a clear appearance or add a Shortcuts tile. A developer’s release can include other code changes as well, but the icon change itself does not represent a change to your personal notification permissions.
Use this troubleshooting sequence if notifications seem to stop
- Confirm what changed. Decide whether you used Home Screen Customize, created a Shortcuts tile, removed the original icon, or installed a new app version.
- Open the real app. Find it in App Library or search for it. If it opens normally, the app is still installed; the custom image is not the app itself.
- Check notification permission. In Settings, open the notification settings for the underlying app and verify that notifications are allowed and that the desired alert locations and badges are enabled.
- Check Notification Center. Look for a recent alert there. Its presence shows that delivery occurred even if a Home Screen tile has no badge.
- Check Focus and scheduled delivery. A Focus mode or scheduled notification delivery can delay visible alerts without any connection to icon customization.
- Check App Library badges. If the app is no longer on the Home Screen, enable Show in App Library under Home Screen & App Library when you want badges there.
- Restore the original icon for a badge test. Keep or return the app’s original Home Screen icon. If its badge appears there, the custom shortcut tile was not a reliable badge surface; the app itself was still functioning.
- Check for an app update. Use the App Store account page to see whether an update is available. An icon change is not a reason to expect the update to be missing.
Safe ways to use custom icons without losing visibility
- Use built-in Home Screen customization when you want a different look but still want the normal app icon behavior.
- When using a Shortcuts tile, keep the original app icon on another Home Screen page if its badge is important.
- Use Notification Center as a second place to verify alerts instead of relying only on a red badge.
- Remember that removing an icon from the Home Screen preserves the app in App Library; deleting the app is a different command.
- After a major iOS update, recheck the labels for Home Screen, App Library and notification settings because Apple can move controls between releases.
The practical answer
Changing an iPhone icon’s built-in appearance does not affect app notifications or updates. A custom image created through Shortcuts is a separate shortcut tile; it still launches the installed app, but Apple does not document guaranteed badge mirroring on that tile. Keep the original icon or use App Library’s Show in App Library option when badge visibility matters. Only a developer’s official icon change alters the shipped app asset, and that arrives through a reviewed app update.
