Where does Boruto take place in the timeline?
After the Fourth Shinobi World War
The sequel opens in the post-war era. Shueisha’s official story guide describes the Shinobi World War as being in the past and the Hidden Leaf Village as enjoying an era of peace. That peaceful setting is important because Boruto grows up with opportunities and technology that Naruto did not have. The new generation is not trying to recreate the original war; it is dealing with what peace, modernization, and inherited expectations do to the shinobi system.

Who are the key Naruto-connected characters?
Boruto Uzumaki

Sasuke Uchiha

In an official Q&A, artist Mikio Ikemoto explains that Boruto follows Sasuke after Sasuke leaves the village and begins calling him “Master.” The relationship is a teacher-student bond: Sasuke’s experience, combat knowledge, and history with Naruto make him an unusually significant mentor for Naruto’s son.

Himawari Uzumaki
Himawari is Boruto’s younger sister and another direct bridge between the two family lines. The official Q&A says she inherited both Uzumaki and Hyuga blood and that those factors work synergistically with Kurama’s chakra. The statement establishes a specific family and chakra connection; it does not, by itself, provide a complete prediction of every ability she may develop.
Kawaki
Kawaki is Boruto’s central counterpart rather than a distant supporting character. Shueisha’s official synopsis identifies both boys as being caught in a reversal of their fates through the godlike power called Omnipotence. That reversal is a core mechanism of the later story and explains why identity, memory, and public allegiance become central questions in Two Blue Vortex.
How are Boruto and Kawaki connected?

“Canon” can become confusing when readers mix manga and anime-only material. For the clearest continuity reference, use the official manga sequence: Naruto, followed by Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, then Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The anime is an adaptation and has its own release schedule and coverage choices; an anime episode’s position in the broadcast order should not be mistaken for a separate manga continuity.

Common misconceptions about Boruto’s continuation
“Boruto replaces Naruto.”
Boruto becomes the central viewpoint character, but Naruto remains a major part of the setting as the Seventh Hokage and Boruto’s father. The sequel changes protagonists without erasing the original protagonist’s consequences.
“The time skip is officially confirmed as exactly three years.”
A major time jump is confirmed. The official pages cited for the story do not state an exact number of elapsed years, so “three years” should not be presented as an official figure.
“Two Blue Vortex is a reboot.”
It is the continuation after the time jump, not a reset. Its altered identities and changed public reality result from events inside the established story, especially Omnipotence.
“You can start with Two Blue Vortex without missing anything.”
You can begin there, but you will encounter family ties, mentorships, and the Boruto–Kawaki reversal after they have already been established. The original Boruto series is the intended foundation.
