Yes. Black & White (2001) can run on Steam Deck, but it is not a one-click Steam installation. The reliable setup uses an original disc or lawful personal ISO, installs the game in Desktop Mode, applies patches v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42 in that order, adds runblack.exe as a non-Steam game, forces Proton Experimental, and uses Steam Input to emulate a keyboard and mouse. A 30-FPS cap is recommended because the original engine was not designed for higher frame rates.
What works, and what does not
The documented Steam Deck setup runs the original Windows release of Black & White (2001) in Gaming Mode after a manual installation. It is best treated as a classic PC game running through Proton, not as a native Linux or controller-supported title.
- The cited Steam Deck report lists the game’s current digital availability as none. Its installation assumes an original disc you own or a lawful personal ISO backup.
- An external USB CD/DVD drive is useful, and effectively necessary, if you are reading the original disc directly on the Deck.
- The community setup documentation requires patches v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42 in that exact order. It says the unofficial patch is required for launch and warns against installing Patch v1.3.
- Steam Deck has no native controller support in this setup. Steam Input’s Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template supplies the needed controls.
- Proton Experimental is the documented Proton choice for the direct Steam shortcut.
- A 30-FPS limit is the sensible starting point. The original engine was not built for high frame rates, so uncapped performance can create timing or stability problems even when the hardware has spare capacity.
Performance observations are encouraging but limited: one Steam Deck report described vanilla gameplay as solid, averaging about 6 watts with a 4 W TDP setting. That observation came from one author’s early play in the first Land, so it is a practical reference rather than a universal benchmark.

A legal copy of the game
Use an original retail disc that you own, or a lawful ISO backup made from your own media. The cited guide does not identify a verified current Steam store listing for the 2001 game, so do not plan around downloading it from a modern digital storefront.

Deck storage and a way to read the disc
Keep enough free space for the installed game, patch files and a backup copy of the unpatched directory. If you have a disc, connect a USB CD/DVD drive through the Deck’s USB-C dock, hub or adapter. A lawful ISO can instead be mounted or copied from another computer.
A Windows computer can simplify file transfer
The Steam Deck report transferred an already-installed game folder from a Windows computer to the Deck. This avoids making an old installer cooperate with a modern compatibility layer. It is not mandatory, but it is often the least troublesome route when the disc installer behaves badly.
Optional runtime managers
Try the direct non-Steam shortcut first. If its prefix or dependencies become unreliable, Bottles or Lutris can provide a dedicated Wine prefix and runner. The fallback procedure later in this guide uses Bottles terminology, but the same principle applies in Lutris: isolate the game, select a compatible runner and point it at the patched executable.

Recommended installation path
1. Enter Desktop Mode and make the game files available
- Open the Deck’s power menu and choose Switch to Desktop.
- Connect your USB optical drive if you are using a physical disc. If you are using a lawful ISO or a folder copied from your Windows computer, place it somewhere in your home directory, such as
/home/deck/Games/BlackWhite. - Install the game into a simple folder with no unusual characters in its name. A path such as
/home/deck/Games/BlackWhitemakes later browsing forrunblack.exeeasier.
If the original installer will not run correctly, install the game on a Windows PC and transfer the resulting installation folder instead. Preserve the entire directory, including data files and the CD’s music files.

2. Patch in the required order
Apply each patch to the same installation directory, waiting for one installer to finish before starting the next. The Black & White Community documentation states that the unofficial patch is needed for launch and specifies this sequence:

When an installer asks for a destination, browse to the directory containing the game’s existing files rather than accepting a new default folder. A patch installed beside, instead of inside, the real game directory will not change the executable you launch.
3. Restore music if the game is silent
If gameplay works but music is missing, copy the CD’s Audio folder into the installed game directory. Keep the folder name and file structure intact. This is a separate media-file issue, not a reason to change Proton versions.

After patching, open the game’s setup utility from its installation folder or Start-menu entry created by the installer. Choose a resolution that is comfortable on the Deck’s screen and enable the highest detail setting that remains responsive. Run Setup after patching so the final executable and configuration files receive the intended settings.

If a selected resolution produces a black screen or an unusable window, return to Desktop Mode, run Setup again and choose a more conservative resolution. The setup utility is the documented way to correct resolution problems; changing random Proton launch options is not the first step.
5. Add the patched executable to Steam
- Open the desktop Steam client and choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Use Browse to select the patched installation’s
runblack.exe. Confirm that the path is the directory you updated with v1.1, v1.2 and v1.42. - Add the shortcut, then return to your Steam library and open its Properties.
- Under Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select Proton Experimental.
The SteamDeckHQ installation report specifically describes adding runblack.exe as a non-Steam title and forcing Proton Experimental. Do not select an unpatched copy by mistake if you kept a backup of the original files.
Getting controls working on Steam Deck
Black & White was designed for a keyboard and mouse. In the documented setup it has no native controller support, so the Deck’s sticks and buttons must send keyboard and mouse inputs through Steam Input.
Choose the correct template
- In Gaming Mode, highlight the non-Steam shortcut and open its controller settings.
- Select the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template.
- Save the layout, launch the game and test camera movement, map interaction and creature gestures before changing individual bindings.
Tune the Deck controls for the game’s interface
- Use the left stick for WASD movement or the equivalent directional keys expected by the game.
- Assign a trackpad to mouse movement. Adjust sensitivity and trackball behavior until scrolling around the map feels controllable rather than abrupt.
- Reserve a stick click, face button or rear button for the most frequently used mouse button. Put the other mouse button on an easily reachable control.
- Use rear buttons for modifier keys or gesture commands if you find yourself taking your thumb off the trackpad repeatedly.
- Keep a physical USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse available for initial setup and troubleshooting. They are also the most predictable input method for long sessions.
Controls that feel wrong are usually a Steam Input layout problem, not a graphics or Proton problem. Re-select the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template before experimenting with custom bindings.

Frame rate, power and visual settings
Why 30 FPS is the safe target
The original engine was not built for higher frame rates. Set the Deck’s per-game frame-rate limit to 30 FPS before trying to optimize power or visual settings. A stable 30 is preferable to an uncapped result that appears faster but introduces simulation timing issues.
What the available performance report actually shows
One report described vanilla gameplay as solid, with approximately 6 watts of average system power at a 4 W TDP setting. The author tested only an early area (the first Land), so later areas, long sessions and heavily modified installations may behave differently. Use that figure as an indication that the game is lightweight, not as a guaranteed battery-life calculation.
Practical tuning order
- Apply the 30-FPS cap.
- Use the game’s Setup utility to choose resolution and maximum detail.
- Only then adjust the Deck’s TDP or refresh-rate settings if you want lower power use.
- If you see instability, return to a standard power profile before changing compatibility files.
When the direct Proton shortcut fails
Directly launching an old Windows game as a non-Steam title can require additional Wine components and configuration. The furudbat Linux guide recommends a managed Bottles workflow when the simple shortcut does not work.
Bottles fallback procedure
- Install Bottles in Desktop Mode and create a new Gaming bottle dedicated to Black & White.
- Select a Wine-GE-Proton runner. The guide lists
wine-ge-proton8-26as its example runner. - Set the bottle’s Windows version to Windows XP.
- Install the game into that bottle, or point the bottle at the installation directory copied from your Windows computer.
- Apply v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42 inside the bottle, in that order. Avoid Patch v1.3.
- In the bottle’s DLL component settings, add
d3dim,ddrawandd3dim700as native, then builtin overrides. - Set the bottle’s program entry to
runblack.exeand launch it from Bottles. - Once it works, add the Bottles program entry to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut if you want to start it from Gaming Mode.
This managed-prefix route separates the game’s old dependencies from other Windows applications. It also gives you a place to change the runner, Windows mode and DLL overrides without repeatedly rebuilding a global Proton prefix.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not launch
- Confirm that the shortcut launches
runblack.exe, not an installer or an old backup folder. - Check that the three required patches were applied to the same directory in the documented sequence.
- In Steam Properties, force Proton Experimental for this shortcut.
- If the direct prefix still fails, move the installation to a dedicated Bottles or Lutris prefix and apply the Windows XP and DLL settings described above.
It launches, but there is no music
Copy the original CD’s Audio folder into the game directory, then restart the game. This fixes missing music when the rest of the installation is functional.
The screen is black, stretched or unusable
Run the game’s Setup utility again and select a different resolution. Do this after patching and before changing runners. A resolution setting that works on a desktop monitor may not be suitable for the Deck’s built-in display.
The controls do nothing or feel reversed
Open the shortcut’s controller settings and select the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template. Then verify that the layout is applied to this specific non-Steam shortcut. A physical keyboard and mouse can help determine whether the game itself is responding before you fine-tune trackpad and rear-button mappings.
A shortcut works once and then stops
Check that Steam is still pointing to the same installation folder and that the folder was not moved after the shortcut was created. Legacy games are especially sensitive to launching an executable from a different copy than the one you patched.
Mods and maintenance
Fan-made drawing-distance changes, HD assets and other modifications exist for the game, but they add compatibility variables. Establish a working patched installation before adding them. Keep an untouched backup of the directory that launches successfully, and add one modification at a time so you can identify the change if startup or rendering breaks.
When updating a modded installation, do not assume that a new runner or patch will preserve every configuration file. Record the working Proton or Wine runner, Windows mode, DLL overrides and Steam Input layout. That small inventory makes it possible to recreate the setup after reinstalling SteamOS or moving the game to another Deck.
Bottom line
Black & White works on Steam Deck when you approach it as a patched Windows game. Use media you legally own, install in Desktop Mode, apply v1.1, v1.2 and unofficial v1.42 in order, restore the Audio folder if necessary, configure the game’s Setup utility, add runblack.exe to Steam, force Proton Experimental and select the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template.
