Sometimes. Android voice typing is not one feature with one privacy policy. Standard Gboard dictation, Pixel’s Advanced voice typing and the newer Enhanced Dictation mode have different offline behavior, device requirements and data paths. Standard Gboard is not guaranteed to work offline on every phone or language. Pixel Advanced voice typing is designed to process ordinary dictation on the device on eligible Pixel models, while Enhanced Dictation keeps basic functions available offline but reserves advanced rewriting and complex commands for a network connection.
Your recordings also depend on which microphone you used and which optional settings you enabled. On-device personalization, voluntary Gboard audio donations and Google Account Assistant history are separate controls; switching one off does not switch off the others or erase existing data.
Which Android voice-typing feature are you using?
Before testing offline dictation or changing privacy settings, identify the microphone on screen:
- Keyboard microphone: tapping the microphone in Gboard starts Gboard voice typing.
- Assistant microphone: speaking to Google Assistant follows Assistant processing and account-activity controls, not necessarily Gboard’s rules.
- Another app’s microphone: a messaging, note-taking or accessibility app may send audio according to its own service and permissions.
The rest of this guide concerns Gboard voice typing, Pixel Advanced voice typing and Enhanced Dictation. Menu wording can vary by Android, Gboard and language version.

Does standard Gboard voice typing work offline?
There is no universal yes. Google’s standard Gboard instructions explain how to tap the keyboard microphone and dictate, but they do not promise offline operation on every Android phone or language. Google also notes that talk-to-text is unavailable for some languages.
That means an offline test can legitimately produce different results on two Android phones, or after a language or Gboard update. A downloaded language package may provide resources needed for some local processing, but it is not proof that your particular Gboard configuration will dictate without a network.
How to test your phone
- Connect to the internet and open a simple text field, such as a note or draft message.
- Tap the Gboard microphone and dictate a short sentence containing punctuation.
- Turn on airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi and mobile data off as well.
- Open the same type of text field and try again. Record whether the microphone appears, whether words are transcribed and whether punctuation works.
- Repeat the test in each language you actually use. Offline support can differ by language.
If dictation stops in airplane mode, that is a limitation of the current device, language or configuration—not evidence that all Android voice typing is online-only.

Advanced voice typing is a separate Pixel feature, not merely a different name for the ordinary Gboard microphone. Google documents it for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. It adds automatic punctuation, emoji and voice commands while keeping ordinary dictated text on the device under the stated conditions.

Requirements and first-time setup
Google lists six supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. The primary Gboard language and the device language need to match. A new Pixel may need several hours and system updates before Advanced voice typing becomes available. Google recommends using Wi-Fi while those updates download; on Android 12, the Android System Intelligence app may also need an update.
- Open any text field so Gboard appears.
- Tap the Gboard settings icon, then choose Voice typing.
- Check whether Advanced voice typing is available and turn it on.
- Confirm that the phone and Gboard use one of the supported languages.
- Install the requested updates over Wi-Fi, restart if prompted, and test once online before testing in airplane mode.
What stays local, and what does not
For ordinary Advanced voice typing, Google’s documentation states: “The text you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the ‘Fix it’ or detailed edits features.” If you invoke one of those editing tools, the transcript and the text already in the input field are sent to Google for processing. Google says no audio is sent and that no text or audio is stored on its servers for that operation.
This distinction matters: an offline dictation result and a cloud-assisted rewrite are different actions. If you need the strongest local-processing behavior, dictate and make edits with the keyboard rather than selecting Fix it or a detailed voice edit.

Enhanced Dictation is another feature, not a synonym for Pixel Advanced voice typing. A newer Google Gboard help page surfaced in French describes a limited offline mode. Basic corrections, automatic punctuation and capitalization continue when the connection is unavailable. Advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice commands become available again when network service returns.

The same documentation says a Retry button can appear after you finish dictating if the connection dropped. Tapping Retry processes the dictation offline. Because the documented page is in French and the English equivalent and exact rollout scope were not established, treat this behavior as feature-specific rather than a guarantee for every Android phone, language or Gboard release.
What happens to your audio and transcripts?
Android voice typing can involve several independent data paths. They should not be treated as one “voice recordings” switch.
On-device personalization and learning
Gboard’s Personalize for you option can save audio recordings and transcripts on the device to improve recognition for your use. Gboard lets you delete learned words and data from its privacy controls. Google also describes federated learning: training occurs on the device and learnings are sent to Google for aggregation, rather than sending the spoken or typed text itself.

These local recordings and learned data are separate from audio that you voluntarily send to Google for broader speech-recognition improvement.

Optional Gboard audio donations
Gboard labels audio donation as voluntary. If you enable it, voice snippets may be sent to Google for conventional learning intended to improve speech recognition for everyone. Google states that donated snippets are no longer than 15 seconds. A snippet containing silence or unrecognized audio can be up to 25 seconds.
Google says donated snippets are kept for no more than 18 months, are not associated with your account and cannot be retrieved by you after they are sent. Some snippets may be listened to or transcribed by human reviewers. To stop future donations, open Gboard Settings > Privacy > Voice > Audio donations and turn the option off. This changes future donations; it does not function as a general microphone block.
Google Account Voice and Audio Activity
Assistant recordings follow a different control. Voice and Audio Activity is an optional part of Web & App Activity and is off unless you enable it. When enabled, Assistant interactions can be saved in your Google Account. Google says audio captured while offline may be saved after the device reconnects.

Turning this control off prevents new Assistant audio from being saved to the account through that setting, but Assistant still processes audio needed to answer you. It also does not delete recordings already saved and does not control other Google services or every audio file stored on the device.

To review or remove existing account activity, go to Google Account > Data & privacy > Web & App Activity > Manage activity. Google says audio saved under Voice and Audio Activity may be reviewed by trained reviewers for service improvement. That review path is distinct from voluntary Gboard audio donations.

- Identify the feature. Use the keyboard microphone for Gboard settings; use Assistant settings for Assistant recordings.
- Check Pixel processing. On an eligible Pixel, open a text field, tap Gboard settings, choose Voice typing and review Advanced voice typing, language matching and pending updates.
- Review local Gboard data. In Gboard Settings > Privacy, inspect Personalize for you. Use the delete learned words and data control if you want to remove Gboard data stored on the device.
- Review donations separately. In the same privacy area, inspect Audio donations and disable them if you do not want optional snippets sent to Google.
- Review Assistant history. In your Google Account, open Web & App Activity and inspect the Include voice and audio activity control. Then separately delete any existing items you do not want retained.
- Check app permissions. If audio comes from another app, review that app’s microphone permission and privacy policy; Gboard and Assistant controls do not govern it.
Troubleshooting offline dictation
The microphone disappears in airplane mode
Standard Gboard has no universal offline guarantee. Verify that the language is supported, update Gboard and Android, and test again. If the phone is a Pixel 6 or newer, check whether Advanced voice typing is enabled and whether the device and Gboard languages match.
Advanced voice typing is missing on a supported Pixel
Install pending system updates over Wi-Fi and allow time for a new device to finish setup. On Android 12, update Android System Intelligence. Confirm that the phone is Pixel 6 or newer and that you are using one of the six listed languages.

Dictation works, but rewriting does not
That is expected when the phone is offline. Enhanced Dictation reserves advanced rewriting and complex commands for network service. Pixel Advanced voice typing’s Fix it and detailed edits also require cloud processing.
You turned off account audio, but old recordings remain
Disabling Voice and Audio Activity stops future saving through that control; it is not a deletion command. Open Manage activity in your Google Account and remove previously saved items separately.
What “private” means in practice
No single setting guarantees that every voice interaction stays on the phone. Pixel Advanced voice typing keeps ordinary dictated text on-device under its documented conditions, while Fix it and detailed edits send text to Google. Gboard personalization can keep data locally, optional donations can send short snippets for broader model improvement, and Assistant history can save account-linked recordings if enabled.
For the most predictable offline and privacy-conscious workflow, use an eligible Pixel with Advanced voice typing configured in a supported matching language, avoid cloud editing commands while offline, keep Gboard audio donations disabled unless you deliberately want to contribute snippets, and review Assistant history independently.
