Short answer: An 8K (8,000Hz) mouse can reduce the time you may wait for the next mouse report from a maximum of 1 millisecond at 1,000Hz to 0.125 milliseconds. That 0.875-millisecond interval difference is real, but it is only one part of the input path. It does not prove a universal improvement in aim or reduce total click-to-photon latency by the same amount. Whether you notice a benefit depends on the game, display refresh rate, operating system, USB connection, CPU headroom, mouse implementation and your own sensitivity to latency.
For most players, 8K is best treated as an optional performance setting rather than an automatic aim upgrade. Test it on your own system, keep a lower rate available, and judge frame-time stability and consistency as well as the headline polling number.
What a mouse polling rate actually measures
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often a mouse sends its position and button state to the computer. It is expressed in hertz (Hz), or reports per second. A 1,000Hz setting sends up to 1,000 reports each second; an 8,000Hz setting sends up to 8,000.
The nominal interval is the reciprocal of the frequency:

| Setting | Reports per second | Nominal interval between reports |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000Hz (1K) | 1,000 | 1 millisecond |
| 2,000Hz (2K) | 2,000 | 0.5 milliseconds |
| 4,000Hz (4K) | 4,000 | 0.25 milliseconds |
| 8,000Hz (8K) | 8,000 | 0.125 milliseconds |
In the simple report-interval comparison, moving from 1K to 8K lowers the maximum wait for the next report by 0.875ms. That calculation describes only the reporting interval. It is not a measurement of complete input lag from your hand, through USB and the operating system, game processing, rendering and display scan-out.
Polling rate is not DPI
DPI (dots per inch) controls how much the cursor or crosshair moves for a given physical movement. Polling rate controls how frequently that movement is sent to the computer. Changing DPI changes sensitivity; changing polling rate changes the timing granularity of position updates. A higher value in one category does not make the other category better.
Does 8K improve aim?
There is no established universal answer that 8K improves aim. More frequent reports can make motion updates arrive at finer time intervals, which may make a cursor feel smoother under some conditions. However, the evidence available for this topic does not include an independent, controlled study showing that 8K produces a measurable aim improvement across games, hardware and player skill levels.
Aim is affected by many variables that can overwhelm a sub-millisecond report-interval difference:
- Game input handling and whether it samples mouse input continuously or in discrete ticks.
- Frame rate, frame-time consistency and the game engine’s render queue.
- Display refresh rate, scan-out timing and pixel response.
- USB, driver and operating-system scheduling.
- Sensor tracking, click latency, wireless transmission and firmware behavior.
- Your sensitivity, grip, control technique and ability to reproduce a movement.
Razer said its testing with competitive players and mouse enthusiasts produced reports of “significantly smoother and more responsive input” with its HyperPolling technology. That is a manufacturer account of user impressions, not an independently published controlled aim-performance result. It supports the possibility that some players feel a difference, but it cannot establish that 8K itself improves accuracy.

Can 8K reduce input lag?
It can reduce the report-wait component of latency. If a movement occurs just after a 1K report, the next report could be nearly 1ms away; at 8K, the corresponding maximum interval is 0.125ms. The theoretical maximum reduction in that specific wait is therefore 0.875ms.
Total input latency is a chain, not a single number:
| Stage | What happens | Why polling rate is not the whole answer |
|---|---|---|
| Physical action | You move the mouse or actuate a button. | Switch and mechanical characteristics still contribute their own delay. |
| Sensor and mouse firmware | The mouse detects movement and packages a report. | Sensor processing and firmware scheduling can differ between devices. |
| USB or wireless transport | The report reaches the computer. | Connection quality, receiver placement and interference matter. |
| Operating system and driver | The report is delivered to software. | Scheduling and system load can add variability. |
| Game input and simulation | The game reads the input and updates its state. | Polling cannot force a game to process input more often than its design allows. |
| Rendering and display | A frame is rendered and scanned to the screen. | Frame rate, queueing, refresh rate and display response often dominate the remaining delay. |
Consequently, an 8K mouse may lower one small component without producing an equal reduction in the end-to-end time you perceive.
What the published vendor comparison does—and does not—show
Razer reports an average latency of 0.090ms for its HyperPolling setup, compared with 0.549ms for a stated best non-Razer 1,000Hz setup. Razer describes this as a controlled measurement from electrical mouse-click actuation until the signal is reflected at the host computer.
Those figures are useful for understanding the company’s test boundary, but they are not a promise that every 8K mouse reaches 0.090ms, nor a measurement of total gameplay latency. The test ends at the host-computer signal before game processing, rendering and display timing. Treat the comparison as vendor-reported device-path data, not proof of a universal aim benefit.

Why 8K can hurt performance on some PCs
An 8K setting creates many more USB reports and input events for the computer to process. Logitech warns that a higher report rate can increase USB traffic and affect system performance, including FPS drops in some games. Razer likewise notes that a CPU-limited computer may not have enough resources to process 8,000 reports each second.

The practical symptom is often not a lower average FPS number but worse frame-time consistency: brief stutters, hitching when moving the mouse, or a game that feels less responsive despite a high polling setting. A stable 1K or 2K configuration can be preferable to an unstable 8K configuration because inconsistent frame delivery is itself noticeable during aiming.
How to test the trade-off fairly
- Use the same mouse, sensitivity, DPI, game settings, display mode and USB port for every test.
- Record a baseline at 1,000Hz. Note average FPS, frame-time behavior and whether mouse movement feels consistent.
- Change only the report rate to 2K, 4K and 8K, if those options exist.
- Repeat the same game scenario or practice routine for each setting. Look for stutter while making fast, continuous movements.
- Keep the highest setting that remains stable. If 8K causes hitching or frame-time spikes, select the lower rate that does not.
Do not infer a benefit from the polling number alone. The relevant result is the combination of input consistency and game performance on your hardware.
Connection and setup considerations
Wired mice
For the wired Razer Viper 8KHz, the manual recommends a direct USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connection to optimize polling. That is a product-specific recommendation, not a guarantee that every 8K mouse requires a particular USB generation. Avoid unpowered hubs and adapters during troubleshooting so that the connection path is as simple as possible.
Wireless mice and receivers
Wireless 8K operation generally depends on a compatible high-rate receiver as well as the mouse. Razer advises keeping its wireless HyperPolling receiver away from active USB 3 hubs because of possible 2.4GHz interference. Place the receiver where it has a clear, short path to the mouse, and follow the manufacturer’s pairing and firmware instructions.

Wireless models also introduce practical trade-offs that a polling number does not capture: receiver arrangement, selectable report-rate modes and battery/runtime at the chosen rate. Higher reporting activity can change power consumption, so check the specific device’s stated runtime rather than assuming that a wireless mouse will behave like a wired one.
How to set and verify an 8K rate
- Install the mouse manufacturer’s configuration utility and update the mouse and receiver firmware if an update is offered.
- Open the device page and find the control labelled “Polling Rate,” “Report Rate” or an equivalent performance setting.
- Select 8,000Hz, apply the setting and reconnect the mouse if the utility requests it.
- Launch the game and watch for stutter, frame-time spikes, USB disconnects or missed input.
- If the game becomes unstable, return to 4,000Hz, 2,000Hz or 1,000Hz and retest. Keep the setting that gives consistent play rather than automatically restoring the maximum.
Why a browser polling checker may show less than 8K
A third-party browser polling checker is not definitive proof of the mouse’s true maximum report rate. The browser, operating system, USB path and computer capability all influence what the test can observe. Logitech notes that a high-capability mouse may report below its maximum depending on the computer’s capabilities and directs device-specific questions to support.
Use such a checker as a rough diagnostic, not as a laboratory measurement. Compare results under the same conditions, close background applications, and verify the configured rate in the manufacturer’s utility. A lower reading in a browser does not by itself prove that the mouse is defective or that the game receives no high-rate reports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does 8K affect FPS?
It can, particularly on a CPU-limited system or in a game that handles every mouse event individually. More reports mean more work for drivers, input processing and the game. The effect is system- and game-dependent: one title may show no meaningful change, while another may exhibit lower FPS or intermittent stutter.

If your frame rate is already limited by graphics settings, increasing reports will not raise it. Conversely, if CPU headroom is scarce, 8K can compete with game simulation and background tasks. Monitor frame times while moving the mouse, not only an idle benchmark, because the additional work is tied to input activity.

When 8K is most likely to be worthwhile
- You use a high-refresh display and a game that handles high-rate input cleanly.
- Your CPU has enough spare capacity that 8K does not produce frame-time spikes.
- You can select intermediate rates and have tested them under real play.
- You value minimizing every measurable part of the input path and accept diminishing returns.
When a lower rate is the better choice
- Mouse movement at 8K causes hitching, inconsistent frame times or FPS loss.
- Your game or operating system does not reliably process the additional reports.
- You use a lower-refresh display where the report-interval difference is unlikely to be perceptually important compared with display timing.
- You need longer wireless battery life and the mouse’s high-rate mode materially reduces runtime.
- You cannot verify that the mouse, receiver, firmware and game all support the selected rate.
How to choose an 8K mouse without overvaluing the specification
Evaluate the complete implementation rather than treating “8K” as a quality score. Check these items before buying:
- Connection: Determine whether the rate is available over a cable, wirelessly, or only with a separate receiver.
- Selectable modes: Confirm that 1K, 2K and 4K options are available so you can match the setting to your system.
- Game and OS support: Look for compatibility notes and known limitations in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Measured stability: Test for stutter and frame-time changes in the games you actually play.
- Receiver placement: For wireless models, plan a clear receiver location away from potential USB 3 interference.
- Power behavior: For wireless models, check battery/runtime specifications at the intended report rate.
- Other latency factors: Sensor behavior, click implementation, firmware quality, shape and control matter more to practical aiming than a headline frequency alone.
The Razer Viper 8KHz is a concrete example of a mouse designed around a true 8,000Hz wired rate. Its existence demonstrates that the mode is technically available; it does not establish current retailer availability, pricing or a guaranteed improvement for every player.

8K polling reduces the nominal report interval from 1ms at 1K to 0.125ms, so it can reduce one small component of input latency. That does not establish a universal aim improvement or an equivalent reduction in end-to-end gameplay latency. Use 8K when your game, connection and CPU handle it without stutter; otherwise, a lower, stable rate is the more responsive choice in practice.
