Short answer: Alice Nation is available on Steam and may be playable on Steam Deck, but its official compatibility rating is Unknown. The store lists a Windows build rather than a native Linux version, so SteamOS is expected to run it through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. There is no published Alice Nation-specific frame-rate, battery, crash-rate, or Proton-version test yet, so “runs well” cannot be promised as a verified result.

The most sensible approach is to install the game normally, keep Steam’s default compatibility choice, and begin with a mouse-like control layout. Alice Nation is built around dragging action and item cards onto locations and characters, and its mouse-oriented, untimed, save-anytime design fits a touchscreen or trackpad and relaxed handheld sessions. Change Proton versions only if the default launch fails, and test the current build yourself before relying on it for long travel or a specific performance target.

What is confirmed about Alice Nation on Steam Deck

Several facts are established by the Steam store and SteamDB, but they do not amount to a Deck performance certification.

Question What the available listings establish What remains unverified
Is the game on Steam? Yes. Alice Nation, by Hanamiriro and 2P Games, released on October 15, 2026. Nothing about the purchase listing guarantees a particular Deck experience.
What is the official Deck label? Steam displays Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown. There is no Verified or Playable assurance from Valve.
Is there a native Linux build? SteamDB records a Windows system and the executable alicenation.exe. A native Linux version is not listed.
How would SteamOS run it? Through Proton, Valve’s Windows-compatibility layer, unless a future native build changes that. Steam and SteamDB do not identify a required or best Proton release.
Is performance measured? Steam and SteamDB publish no Alice Nation-specific frame-rate, battery, resolution, or crash measurements. Actual results can vary with the current game build, SteamOS version, display settings, and control layout.

Steam’s store page lists 98% positive reviews from 105 reviews, but that is a general game-reception figure, not a Steam Deck benchmark. SteamDB also records Steam Cloud, controller metadata, and accessibility tags; those entries help with setup decisions but do not convert the Unknown label into a compatibility guarantee.

Why a Windows game can work on SteamOS

Steam Deck is a portable gaming PC that normally runs SteamOS. Valve describes Proton as a translation layer that allows most Windows games to run on SteamOS “with equal or better performance” without requiring developers to perform heavy porting work. Proton translates the Windows-facing game and graphics calls into forms the Linux-based system can use.

That makes Proton the expected path for Alice Nation because the listed executable is Windows-only. It does not mean every Windows game behaves identically on Deck. A title can launch, display correctly, accept input, save, and resume—or fail at any one of those points. Valve’s compatibility label is intended to communicate the experience users can expect; Verified status also requires the game and its middleware to meet Valve’s support criteria. Alice Nation currently has neither Verified nor Playable status, so treat Proton as a likely mechanism, not proof of a finished Deck port.

What kind of game is Alice Nation?

The control and hardware implications follow from the game’s interaction model. The Steam description tells players to “Drag action and item cards onto locations and characters to explore, interact, and solve puzzles.” The game also involves gathering resources, crafting, and making choices such as offering a greeting, using force, or sneaking an item away.

This is a slower, turn-based, card-and-puzzle structure rather than a reflex-heavy action game. Steam lists Mouse Only Option, Playable without Timed Input, Save Anytime, and Playable At Your Own Pace. Those tags support short sessions and reduce the consequences of a less precise handheld pointer. They do not establish frame rate or battery life, but they do make the game’s interaction style a plausible match for Deck controls.

Game feature Deck implication Practical recommendation
Card dragging onto locations and characters Pointer accuracy and a reliable drag gesture matter more than rapid button presses. Start with the touchscreen or right trackpad as a mouse surface.
Mouse-oriented selection A conventional gamepad-only layout may feel unnatural. Map one button to left click and keep a pointer available at all times.
No timed input You can make decisions without a countdown pressure, according to the listed accessibility tag. Use the game to test controls and readability at your own pace.
Save anytime Short stops are less risky if the in-game save function works correctly. Save before suspending the Deck during your first sessions.
Resource gathering and crafting Menus and inventory navigation may require repeated pointer movement. Prefer the control surface—touchscreen or trackpad—you can use consistently.

Recommended first installation and launch

Use the default path first. Avoid changing several variables at once, because doing so makes a later failure difficult to diagnose.

  1. Install from your Steam Library. Download the standard Steam build of Alice Nation to the internal drive or a supported microSD card. Steam and SteamDB do not list a special Deck package or a separate Linux download.
  2. Open the game’s Properties. From the Library, select Alice Nation, open the gear menu, and choose Properties. Go to Compatibility and leave the option to force a specific compatibility tool disabled for the first launch. This allows Steam to use Valve’s default choice.
  3. Launch once without performance tweaks. Do not begin by changing frame limits, TDP, GPU clocks, resolution, or community control layouts. You need a clean baseline for the current build.
  4. Wait through first-run setup. If Steam or the game performs shader, runtime, or first-launch preparation, let it finish. A delayed first start is not by itself evidence that the game is incompatible.
  5. Reach an interactive scene. Confirm that the title screen, menus, card selection, drag-and-drop action, and text are visible. A launch that reaches only a splash screen is not a successful compatibility test.
  6. Test saving. Use the game’s save-anytime feature, leave the scene, and reload the save. The accessibility tag indicates that saving at any time is supported, but your own first-session test confirms that the current build writes and restores saves on your Deck.
  7. Test suspension. Press the Steam button, return to the home screen, suspend briefly, and resume. Check that the pointer, card position, audio, and save state remain usable.
  8. Only then adjust controls. Once the game works with the baseline configuration, create a personal layout rather than troubleshooting launch and input simultaneously.

General Steam Deck guidance recommends leaving Valve’s default Proton choice unless troubleshooting is needed. That conservative order is especially important while the store label remains Unknown.

Control layout that suits card dragging

Alice Nation has no published official Deck control map. The following layout is an editorial recommendation inferred from its mouse-only accessibility tag, card-drag description, and the Deck’s integrated touchscreen and touchpads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Deck control Suggested action Why it helps
Touchscreen Move the pointer; touch and drag cards; tap to select. Direct manipulation is the closest match to a mouse drag.
Right trackpad Pointer movement; press the pad for click. Useful when you want the screen untouched or are playing with the Deck held in both hands.
A button Left click or confirm. Provides a physical selection button for menus and cards.
B button Right click, back, or cancel where the game exposes that action. Gives you a consistent escape route without guessing at touchscreen gestures.
D-pad Optional menu navigation or directional focus. Some interfaces expose keyboard-like focus; leave this unassigned if it conflicts with pointer control.
Steam button plus trackpad or touchscreen Desktop-style pointer recovery and text entry when SteamOS overlays appear. Helps recover if focus leaves the game or a text field appears.

How to refine the layout

  1. Open the game’s controller settings from the Steam Library and choose the standard Steam Input configuration editor.
  2. Set the right trackpad to a mouse or trackball behavior, then assign its press to left click.
  3. Assign A to left click as a second option. Having both a pad press and a face button reduces hand movement during long inventory or crafting sequences.
  4. Assign B to right click only if the game responds to it; otherwise use it for back or cancel. Do not assume that every screen has a right-click action.
  5. Test a complete card drag: place the pointer over a card, press or touch, move to a valid location or character, and release. Test both touchscreen and trackpad methods.
  6. Keep a way to reach the Steam overlay. If the pointer becomes trapped in a menu, the Steam button and touchscreen or trackpad provide a recovery route.

If text is too small, try the game’s own display or interface options before changing system scaling. Alice Nation’s published information does not state which resolution or font-size settings Alice Nation provides, so record what works on your particular Deck rather than assuming a universal setting.

If Alice Nation does not launch

Change one thing at a time and keep notes. Proton troubleshooting is more useful when you can identify the exact version and result.

  1. Restart Steam and the Deck. A clean restart removes a transient process or overlay problem without changing the game installation.
  2. Verify the installation. In Properties > Installed Files, use Steam’s file-verification command. Let it complete before trying another compatibility tool.
  3. Try a current Proton release. Return to Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, choose one current Proton release, and launch. Do not switch several versions in one session.
  4. Record the result. Note the Proton version, whether the game reached the menu, whether cards accepted input, and whether saving worked. If it fails, return to the previous setting before trying another version.
  5. Remove conflicting customizations. Temporarily disable a community controller layout, overlays, launch options, and undocumented tweaks. Re-test with Steam’s standard input and the selected Proton version.
  6. Check for a game update. Because the release is new, a later build may alter compatibility. Apply Steam updates, then retest the default Proton choice before keeping a forced version.

No current official Alice Nation or Valve documentation identifies a known Alice Nation crash, launch flag, required runtime, or confirmed Proton release. Do not copy a launch option from an unrelated game unless a current developer or Valve support note specifically documents it for Alice Nation.

How to judge whether it “runs well” on your Deck

With an Unknown rating, use a repeatable acceptance test instead of a promised frame-rate number. A game can be perfectly comfortable for a card puzzle while still lacking the evidence needed for a Verified label.

  • Launch reliability: Start the game three times from a cold launch and confirm that it reaches the menu each time.
  • Input reliability: Drag several action and item cards to locations and characters, cancel a selection, and navigate menus using your chosen controls.
  • Save reliability: Save, quit to the Library, relaunch, and load the same state. Repeat after a brief suspend/resume cycle.
  • Readability: Check dialogue, card text, crafting information, and any item descriptions from your normal seated distance and lighting.
  • Stability over a session: Play long enough to visit exploration, resource, crafting, and choice screens. Watch for freezes, missing cursor states, audio loss, or broken focus.
  • Power behavior: Observe your own battery drain and fan noise under the current build. No published battery figure is available, so treat your measurement as device- and setting-specific.

Alice Nation’s untimed, save-anytime design makes it easier to stop after a short test, but those accessibility tags are not a substitute for checking resume and save behavior on the actual hardware.

Steam Cloud, desktop play, and save safety

SteamDB records Steam Cloud for the game. Keep Steam Cloud enabled if you move between a Deck and a desktop, but remember that cloud behavior depends on the game’s implementation and on Steam completing its synchronization. Before switching devices, wait for the Library’s sync state to finish and avoid launching the same save on two devices at once.

During the first week of play, make a manual save before leaving the game and after returning from sleep. If a save appears missing, do not immediately overwrite the slot on another device; first allow Steam to finish syncing and confirm which local or cloud copy is newer.

What the Unknown label means for a purchase decision

Unknown is not a statement that Alice Nation fails on Deck. It means Valve has not assigned a more specific expectation in the compatibility system. Proton can run many Windows games, but the absence of a Verified or Playable label leaves details such as text readability, pointer behavior, keyboard prompts, middleware, and resume handling for the player to confirm.

Buy or install with the expectation of a short validation session. If card dragging, saving, and resume all work with the default setup, the game’s slow pace and mouse-oriented design are strong reasons to keep it on Deck. If the title launches only with a particular Proton release, loses input after suspend, or makes text unreadable on the built-in display, those are practical limits even if the game technically starts.

Troubleshooting symptoms and targeted responses

Symptom First response What not to assume
Nothing appears after pressing Play Restart Steam, verify files, then test one current Proton release through Properties > Compatibility. Do not assume a fixed Proton version is officially required; none is documented.
The game opens but the pointer is missing Press the Steam button, restore focus, and test the touchscreen or right-trackpad mouse layout. Do not assume the game is unusable until both pointer methods have been tested.
Cards select but will not move Check that the control is sending a held left click during movement, then test a direct touchscreen drag. Do not treat a single community layout as the game’s official mapping.
Menus work but text is hard to read Try the game’s own interface or display options and adjust your viewing distance or system scaling. No universal resolution or font recommendation is established for this title.
The game resumes to a broken scene Save before suspension, fully quit, relaunch, and report whether the issue repeats. Do not claim general suspend reliability from one successful resume.
A save is absent on another device Wait for Steam Cloud synchronization and check which device has the newest local save. Cloud listing does not guarantee conflict-free synchronization in every situation.

Bottom line: is Alice Nation a good Steam Deck candidate?

Alice Nation is a reasonable candidate for Steam Deck, not a verified recommendation. Its Windows build should normally use Proton; its card-dragging, mouse-oriented interaction points naturally to the touchscreen or right trackpad; and its no-timed-input, save-anytime, play-at-your-own-pace features suit handheld sessions. The official status remains Unknown, and no game-specific performance or battery testing is available.

Install it with Valve’s default compatibility setting, validate launch, dragging, saving, readability, and suspend behavior, and only then experiment with a forced Proton release if necessary. Keep the working version and control layout recorded so you can reproduce the setup after a game or SteamOS update.
