Yes. Airtel operates a live 5G service in India called Airtel 5G Plus. Whether you can use it depends on your exact location, a compatible 5G phone, supported software and an eligible plan or offer. An Airtel 4G SIM generally does not need to be replaced.
The most reliable way to check is to search your address or PIN code on Airtel’s 5G coverage map, then confirm phone and city readiness in the Airtel Thanks app. Treat both as guidance rather than a guarantee of an indoor signal.
What is Airtel 5G Plus?
Airtel 5G Plus is Airtel’s consumer 5G service in India. Airtel describes it as live in multiple Indian cities, but a city appearing on a rollout list does not mean every street, building or room has usable 5G. Coverage is local and can change as the network expands or is adjusted.

5G can provide higher capacity and faster downloads than older mobile technology when the network, device and signal conditions support it. Airtel’s service page advertises “up to 30x faster downloads” and attributes the claim to Airtel CTO Randeep Singh Sekhon, who said: “Airtel 5G Plus can deliver up to 30x speeds compared to existing technologies.” The wording is a maximum promotional claim, not a typical speed or a guarantee for every customer.
Is Airtel 5G available in my area?
Availability must be checked at the address level. Airtel’s map provides an approximate view of expected outdoor coverage. Airtel explicitly says the map does not reflect indoor availability, and that buildings, geography and surrounding conditions affect real service. The map is approximate, can change and is not a guarantee that your phone will connect at a particular spot.
Use Airtel’s coverage map
- Open Airtel’s official coverage map.
- Search for your address or PIN code.
- Switch the map to the 5G view.
- Read the result as predicted outdoor coverage, not a promise of service inside your home, office, shop or vehicle.
If the map shows 5G near you but your handset remains on 4G, test the phone outdoors in the same area shown on the map. A nearby tower or a city-level listing cannot overcome a building’s walls, local terrain, congestion or a device that lacks the required bands or software.
Confirm readiness in the Airtel Thanks app
Airtel’s FAQ directs customers to the Airtel Thanks app to check whether their handset is 5G-ready and whether their city is shown as ready. App labels and eligibility checks can change, so use the current result for your account rather than an old screenshot or a generic phone list.

Will my Airtel 4G SIM work on 5G?
Usually, yes. Airtel states: “All Our existing Airtel 4G SIMs are already 5G enabled.” That means replacing a working Airtel 4G SIM should not be your default troubleshooting step. You still need a compatible 5G handset, supported software, local 5G coverage and any plan or offer requirements that apply to your account.
A SIM statement does not make a 4G-only phone a 5G phone. If the handset cannot use 5G, a SIM swap will not add that capability. Likewise, an eligible SIM cannot create coverage where Airtel has no usable signal.
Do I need a 5G phone for Airtel?
Yes. The phone must support 5G, and Airtel may require a software update before the 5G option appears or works correctly. Exact menu names differ between manufacturers and Android or iOS versions, so the path on one handset may not match another.
Check the phone and software
- Open the Airtel Thanks app and run its handset-readiness check.
- Install any pending operating-system or carrier-settings update offered by the phone.
- Open the mobile-network settings and choose 5G as the preferred network mode. Depending on the handset, this is usually under Settings → Connections or Settings → Mobile Network.
- Return to the location where the coverage map predicts 5G and allow the phone a short time to register.
A phone can be marketed as “5G” yet still have regional, carrier or software limitations. Before buying a new handset, check the exact model’s Airtel compatibility and your address-level coverage. If your current phone is already supported, buying another phone is unnecessary.

How to turn on Airtel 5G
The general procedure is simple, but labels vary by model:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Connections, Mobile Network or the equivalent cellular-settings menu.
- Select the Airtel SIM if the phone has two SIMs.
- Open Preferred network type or Network mode.
- Choose an option that includes 5G, such as 5G/4G/3G/2G automatic.
- Restart the phone if the setting does not take effect, then install any remaining software update.
Do not force a 5G-only mode if your phone offers one unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it. Automatic 5G/4G selection lets the handset fall back to 4G when 5G is unavailable, which is useful when moving between coverage areas.
Is Airtel 5G unlimited?
“Unlimited 5G” is an offer label with conditions, not an automatic entitlement for every Airtel customer. Airtel says the offer must be claimed through the Airtel Thanks app with a compatible phone. Eligibility, the required recharge and the offer terms can vary by account and change over time.
When the offer is available in your account, claim it in the Thanks app before assuming that a qualifying recharge alone activates unlimited 5G. Read the app’s current terms, including any restrictions, validity period or conditions attached to the benefit.

The following were displayed when the recharge listing was reviewed in 2026. They are dynamic examples, not permanent prices or a promise that every customer sees the same options.

Airtel’s FY 2025–26 Q1 investor pack also reported bundled prepaid packs combining unlimited 5G data and calls with OTT access starting at ₹598 for 28 days. That is a company-reported plan example for that quarter, not a current universal price. Check the recharge flow in your own account for the current amount, validity, included data and claim requirements.

There is no single Airtel 5G speed that applies to every location. Results depend on signal strength, indoor attenuation, the phone’s supported bands, network load, backhaul and the server used for a test. The reviewed Airtel material does not establish an independent, current speed figure for every area.

Why your phone may stay on 4G
- The address is outside usable 5G coverage: Recheck the exact location on the map, not only the city name.
- Indoor signal loss: Move near a window or outdoors. Airtel’s map predicts outdoor coverage and does not guarantee an indoor connection.
- Unsupported handset: Confirm the exact model in the Thanks app and verify that it is not merely a 4G variant with a similar name.
- Outdated software: Install the phone’s pending system or carrier update.
- 5G disabled: Select a preferred network mode that includes 5G under Connections or Mobile Network.
- Offer or account limitation: Check the current plan and any required Thanks-app claim before treating “unlimited 5G” as active.
- Temporary network conditions: Test again at another outdoor point or time. A map prediction is approximate and can change.
Replacing a functioning Airtel 4G SIM is not the first fix because Airtel says existing 4G SIMs are already 5G enabled. Consider a SIM replacement only if Airtel support identifies a separate SIM fault or account problem.
How to compare Airtel 5G with another network
A fair comparison requires the same conditions. Compare both services at the same address, with the same or equivalent 5G phone, at similar times and in the same indoor or outdoor position. Record whether each network connects, the plan’s price and validity, the daily data allowance, and the exact terms for any unlimited-5G benefit.
Do not declare one network universally fastest from a city list, a single speed test or a promotional maximum. Airtel’s reviewed sources do not provide a controlled, independent Airtel-versus-competitor performance comparison.
What to check before buying a 5G phone for Airtel
- Confirm the exact model and regional variant in Airtel’s handset-readiness check.
- Check that the phone’s software is current and supports selecting 5G in network settings.
- Search your home, workplace and regular travel locations on Airtel’s coverage map.
- Verify the current recharge or offer terms in the Airtel Thanks app instead of assuming every “unlimited 5G” label applies to you.
- Do not buy a new phone solely because Airtel has 5G if your existing handset is already supported and your locations are covered.
Bottom line: does Airtel have 5G?
Yes. Airtel 5G Plus is a live service in India, but access is determined by your exact location, phone, software, settings and account eligibility. Keep your Airtel 4G SIM unless support identifies a problem, enable 5G on a compatible handset, and verify both the coverage map and Airtel Thanks app. Treat map colors, city labels, “unlimited 5G” offers and speed claims as qualified information that must be checked for your address and account. Coverage, plans and offer terms can change, so recheck them before making a purchase or recharge.
