AI can save time on some work, but the time saved does not automatically become a faster, better, or lighter workday. In Workday’s November 2025 survey of active AI users at large organizations, respondents reported time savings alongside substantial rework and review. Controlled studies likewise find that results depend on the task, the worker, and the tools. “Verification tax” is a useful shorthand for the effort of checking and fixing AI output; it is not a standardized measure that these studies calculate in the same way.
What does the evidence say about AI efficiency?
There is no single productivity result that applies across workplaces. The evidence spans a corporate-sponsored survey, software-engineering studies, a randomized field experiment on consulting tasks, and an observational analysis of historical time diaries. Those methods measure different things: perceived savings, rework, task completion time, correctness, or work hours. Their findings should be read side by side, not combined into one economy-wide estimate.
| Study and method | Population and task | Reported result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workday, survey fielded November 2025 and reported January 2026 | 3,200 full-time employees who actively used AI at organizations with annual revenue above $100 million across North America, APAC, and EMEA | 85% reported saving one to seven hours per week; nearly 40% of reported AI time savings were lost to rework; 14% consistently reported clear positive net outcomes; 77% of daily users said they reviewed AI work as carefully as or more carefully than human work. | Self-reported experience. Rework includes correcting errors, rewriting, and verifying output from generic tools; it is not an independently timed measure of verification alone. |
| Google Research, 2024 mixed-methods user study | 76 software engineers completing a programming exam with and without Bard | Effects varied by expertise, question type, and whether outcomes were demonstrated or self-reported; novice participants improved on open-ended “solve” questions with AI. | Performance, efficiency, satisfaction, trust, and reliance in a bounded exam task. |
| Google researcher randomized controlled trial, 2024 | 96 full-time Google software engineers completing one complex, enterprise-grade task with three AI features | Estimated about 21% less time to complete the task; the confidence interval was large. | Completion time on one task using an internal-tools workflow, not general coding productivity. |
| METR randomized controlled trial, July 2025 | Experienced open-source developers working on tasks in their own repositories with early-2025 AI tools | Developers took 19% longer with AI than without it. | Task completion time in a specific repository and tool setting. |
| Organization Science field experiment, 2026 | 758 knowledge workers randomly assigned to no AI, GPT-4, or GPT-4 plus a prompt-engineering overview while doing realistic consulting tasks | On 18 tasks within the study’s measured AI capability frontier, AI users completed 12.2% more tasks and were 25.1% faster on average, with improved solution quality. On one complex managerial task selected as outside that frontier, AI users were 19% less likely to produce a correct solution. | Task volume, speed, quality, and correctness across selected tasks; not long-run enterprise return on investment. |
| NBER Working Paper 33536, February 2025 observational analysis | Individual time-diary data covering 2004–2023, analyzed by occupational AI exposure | Higher occupational AI exposure was associated with longer workdays and less leisure, especially where AI complements labor. | Historical association between occupational exposure and time allocation, not a causal estimate of current generative AI’s effect. |
The rows are not competing estimates of one quantity. For example, a survey answer about hours saved is not equivalent to a controlled measure of task completion time, and neither directly establishes whether output quality, company profit, or worker well-being improved.
Why can AI save time and still create rework?
An AI tool may produce a useful first draft or speed up a defined step while still leaving a person to check whether the answer is accurate, complete, appropriate to the audience, and consistent with workplace requirements. If errors require correction or content needs substantial rewriting, some of the apparent time saving is spent after generation. Workday’s survey groups correcting errors, rewriting, and verifying output under rework; it does not isolate how much time respondents spent on each activity.
The survey is evidence of what its respondents reported, not an independent time-and-motion study or a randomized estimate. Its participants were already active AI users at large organizations, so the findings do not represent all employees, people who do not use AI, or every type of workplace. Workday also reported that 39% of organizations put AI savings back into technology, 30% into employee development, and 32% increased workloads. Those are reported choices by organizations, not evidence that any one choice causes a particular return.

Why do controlled studies reach different results?
The task and the tool matter
Google’s 2024 Bard study found that assistance varied by expertise and question type. Its authors also observed automation complacency and increased reliance during the task. That points to a possible oversight problem, but it does not establish that software engineers generally become less efficient when using AI. A separate Google trial found a time reduction for one complex enterprise-grade task, while its authors cautioned that an internal-tools result from summer 2024 may not generalize across tools or over time.
METR’s slowdown result is similarly bounded: it concerns experienced open-source developers, their own repositories, and the AI tools available in early 2025. It is an important counterexample to assuming that AI necessarily speeds up coding, not evidence that AI slows all coding or knowledge work.

Capability is uneven across tasks
The Organization Science experiment illustrates why task fit matters. For work within the researchers’ measured capability frontier, AI assistance improved speed and task volume on average. On a complex managerial task selected as outside that frontier, AI users were less likely to reach a correct solution. The same tool can therefore help on one assignment and increase the risk of a wrong answer on another; surface similarity between tasks is not proof that the model handles them equally well.
These experiments tested particular tasks and participant groups. They do not capture every factor in sustained workplace use, such as how people learn a workflow, how often a task recurs, or whether review and handoffs change over time. The evidence supports choosing tasks deliberately and checking outcomes, rather than declaring either universal productivity gains or universal failure.

How much time do people spend checking AI output?
The cited evidence does not establish one standard number of hours or a universal share of work devoted to checking. Workday reports how often users say they review output and the share of reported savings lost to a combined category of rework; these measures are not the same as a timed audit of verification effort. The Google, METR, and Organization Science studies assess particular task outcomes rather than a common cross-industry verification measure.
It is therefore more accurate to ask what checking a particular workflow requires. Review may be light when a result is easy to validate and errors are low-consequence; it may be extensive when the task involves specialized knowledge, consequential decisions, or output that is difficult to verify independently. The practical test is whether the finished work, including review and correction, is better or faster than the available alternative.

Who benefits when AI makes work faster?
Saving time on a task does not tell us who receives the gain. It might create room for more work, reduce a customer’s wait, free time for higher-value tasks, or improve a firm’s output. Those outcomes depend on how an organization changes workloads, staffing, incentives, and workflow; the cited task studies do not determine that distribution.
NBER Working Paper 33536 analyzes time diaries from 2004–2023 and reports that higher occupational AI exposure is associated with longer workdays and reduced leisure, particularly where AI complements labor. Its authors argue that bargaining power can shape whether gains accrue to workers, firms, or consumers. Because the analysis is observational and predates the current wave of generative AI, it should frame questions about distribution rather than be treated as proof that today’s generative tools caused longer hours.

Workday’s earlier survey, fielded in November and December 2023 and reported in 2024, found that 70% of surveyed business leaders supported designing AI to allow human review and intervention. In the same survey, 42% of employees said their company did not clearly understand which systems should be fully automated and which required human intervention. These are perceptions about governance and organizational readiness, not measurements of productivity.
How should an organization reduce the verification burden?
The studies do not prescribe one universal implementation plan, but together they support practical steps that make the work and its risks visible:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Match AI to bounded tasks. Start with work where the expected output and acceptable error range are clear. Do not infer that success on one task proves fitness for a neighboring task.
- Set review rules by consequence. Define who checks an output, what they check, and when independent validation is required. A fluent answer is not itself evidence of correctness.
- Train for both use and verification. Employees need to understand tool limits, how to identify unsupported claims, and when to stop and seek another source or expert review.
- Measure the whole workflow. Compare time for the full process—including prompting, checking, correcting, and handoffs—not just generation time. Track quality and error rates alongside speed.
- Decide where any time saving goes. Make explicit whether saved capacity will reduce backlogs, support higher-value work, improve service, or change workload expectations.
- Reassess as tools and work change. A workflow that performs well with one model, task, or user group may not remain suitable after a tool update or a change in the task.
A useful “verification tax” calculation for a team is a local one, not a universal benchmark: compare the time and quality of the complete AI-assisted workflow with the existing process on representative tasks. Include the person’s review and correction time, and record failures that require rework. The result can guide a team decision, but it should not be presented as a standardized industry rate.
