AI coding tools may make it easier to learn JavaScript and work with unfamiliar code, but current evidence does not show that they caused JavaScript’s overall popularity. Surveys and GitHub activity show that AI use and software development are growing alongside continued JavaScript use; they do not measure how many people chose JavaScript because of AI.
What the evidence says—and what it does not
Three kinds of evidence help answer whether AI tools are contributing to JavaScript’s popularity, but they measure different things. Stack Overflow surveys ask developers what they use or think; GitHub rankings reflect activity on GitHub; and a controlled experiment examined how programmers adopt AI-generated JavaScript code. None provides a causal estimate of AI’s effect on JavaScript adoption.
| Evidence | What it measures | What it can tell us |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow 2024 survey | Self-reported language and AI-tool use among survey respondents | JavaScript and AI tools were both widely reported by respondents; it does not establish that one drove the other. |
| GitHub Octoverse reports | Language activity and developer trends on GitHub | Platform rankings and AI adoption changed over time, but they are not a census of all software development or proof of cause. |
| 2025 JavaScript-code experiment | Whether programmers adopted AI-generated code in a specific task | Comments influenced acceptance of generated JavaScript suggestions; the study did not track language choice or popularity. |
How AI could help people learn or use JavaScript
An AI assistant can suggest code, explain an unfamiliar function, or help someone reason through a language feature. Those capabilities could reduce some of the friction involved in starting or continuing to program in JavaScript, just as they could for other languages. That is a plausible mechanism, not evidence that AI has increased JavaScript’s share of developers.
In GitHub’s survey, 60–71% of respondents across the surveyed countries said AI tools made it easy to adopt a new programming language or understand an existing codebase; 23–29% said those tasks were very easy. These are respondents’ perceptions, and the findings are not specific to JavaScript. GitHub described its survey category as “any developer tools that use generative AI and LLMs to provide engineering assistance throughout the software development cycle.” The question asked whether participants had ever used such tools at or outside work, not how frequently they used them. Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey offers a separate view of developer-reported language and AI-tool use.

Generated JavaScript still calls for judgment
A study by Li, Treude, and Turel examined 173 programmers adopting AI-generated JavaScript solutions. Comments accompanying the suggestions significantly influenced adoption regardless of participant expertise. This narrow result suggests that how generated code is explained can affect whether people use it. It does not show that those programmers later selected JavaScript for a project or that AI increased the language’s overall popularity. Read the study.
What the surveys show about JavaScript and AI use
Stack Overflow’s 2024 Developer Survey reported that 62.3% of respondents used JavaScript. Its survey landing page reports 65,437 respondents from 185 countries. The figure describes that survey population and depends on self-reporting; it should not be read as the share of all programmers or all code written in JavaScript.

In the same survey, 76% of respondents said they were using or planning to use AI tools in development in 2024, compared with 70% the previous year. Because the figure combines current use with intended use—and covers AI tools generally—it cannot show that those tools led respondents to JavaScript. See the Stack Overflow 2024 survey.

More recent responses also argue against treating AI as a universal or effortless change in how software is made. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, 72% of respondents said “vibe coding” was not part of their professional development work; another 5% said emphatically that it was not. The survey framed the question as, “In your own words, is ‘vibe coding’ part of your professional development work?” and defined the phrase as generating software from LLM prompts. Separately, 52% agreed that AI tools or agents had positively affected their productivity. These results describe respondents’ views, not JavaScript adoption. See Stack Overflow’s 2025 AI survey.
How JavaScript’s GitHub ranking has changed
GitHub’s language rankings provide a different lens from a developer survey: they reflect activity on GitHub, not language use across every company, platform, or private codebase. The rankings also show why “JavaScript is popular” needs a measure and a date.
- 2024: GitHub reported that Python overtook JavaScript as the most-used language on the platform. It cautioned that it could not fully explain the developer-growth surge it observed, while noting AI might be one influence.
- August 2025: GitHub reported that TypeScript overtook Python and JavaScript on GitHub. It also said nearly 80% of new developers on the platform used Copilot in their first week. That percentage applies to new GitHub developers, not to all developers or JavaScript users.
GitHub describes a correlation between AI adoption and shifts in language preferences, not proof that AI caused JavaScript’s popularity. The platform’s ranking changes also do not erase JavaScript’s reported use in Stack Overflow’s separate survey; the measures and populations differ. GitHub Octoverse 2024 and GitHub Octoverse 2025 explain their respective platform findings.
Rank #4
So, are AI tools making JavaScript more popular?
They may help some people learn JavaScript or work through code, and GitHub’s findings are consistent with AI adoption and language preferences changing at the same time. But the available figures do not tell us how many developers began using JavaScript because of an AI assistant, nor how much of the language’s popularity is attributable to AI. The accurate conclusion is that AI could lower barriers to working with JavaScript, while a direct causal contribution to its overall popularity remains unmeasured.
