Yes. ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE supports multiplayer and full cross-play across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The officially documented flight-stick option is Thrustmaster’s licensed T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO Ace Combat 8 Edition, sold in separate PlayStation/PC and Xbox/PC variants. Official documentation does not confirm that every generic HOTAS works, so choose a device-specific model rather than assuming universal compatibility.
What Ace Combat 8 supports at a glance
| Question | Confirmed answer |
|---|---|
| Which platforms are listed? | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. |
| When is the worldwide launch? | Bandai Namco lists October 2, 2026 as the planned worldwide launch date. |
| Is there multiplayer? | Yes. ACE COMBAT ONLINE is a dedicated multiplayer mode with progression and save data separate from Campaign Mode. |
| Is cross-play supported? | Yes. The multiplayer FAQ describes full cross-platform support. |
| Which HOTAS is officially documented? | Thrustmaster T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO Ace Combat 8 Edition models, with a PlayStation/PC version and an Xbox/PC version. |
| Will any generic HOTAS work? | That is not established by the official documentation reviewed. Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact device and platform. |
Does Ace Combat 8 support HOTAS?
The safest confirmed answer is yes, for the officially licensed Thrustmaster T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO Ace Combat 8 Edition models. Thrustmaster publishes a native mapping specifically titled “Mapping – Ace Combat 8 – PC & PS5 – T.Flight Hotas NEO – Native Mapping.” That is stronger evidence than a generic claim that the game accepts ordinary USB flight sticks.
There are two platform-oriented versions:
| HOTAS version | Documented platform labeling | Best match |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation model | Officially licensed; Plug & Play on PS5 and PC; product labels include PS4, PS5, and PC. | PlayStation 5 or PC players using the PlayStation/PC variant. |
| Xbox model | Officially licensed; Plug & Play on Xbox and PC; product listing covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. | Xbox Series X|S or PC players using the Xbox/PC variant. |
The console families matter. A PlayStation-labeled model should not be treated as interchangeable with the Xbox-labeled model simply because both are called T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO. Before buying or connecting a stick, match the device variant to the console you intend to use. On PC, verify the manufacturer’s platform labeling and the game’s detected controls rather than relying only on the product name.

How to use the officially supported HOTAS
The documented path is straightforward, but the exact in-game menu wording can vary by platform or final release build. Use this sequence to avoid the most common setup mistakes:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify your platform. For PlayStation 5, select the PlayStation/PC edition. For Xbox Series X|S, select the Xbox/PC edition. For Steam, either platform-oriented model is described as covering PC, but check the product labeling before purchase.
- Connect the HOTAS before launching the game. A direct connection helps the game enumerate the throttle and stick as an input device during startup.
- Start Ace Combat 8 and open its control or input settings. Look for the connected HOTAS or flight-control device in the available input assignments.
- Load or reproduce the native mapping. Thrustmaster’s support material provides the Ace Combat 8 PC-and-PS5 native mapping for the T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO. Use that mapping as the reference when checking axis and button assignments.
- Test every axis and primary control. Confirm that pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, weapon selection, target selection, and the main action buttons respond before entering a mission.
- Save the configuration and test in a low-pressure situation. If an axis is reversed or a button is absent, correct the assignment in the control settings before joining an online session.
“Plug & Play” describes the manufacturer’s platform positioning; it does not guarantee that every possible control preference is already arranged exactly as you want. A short control check is still worthwhile, particularly when moving the device between PC and console.
Are generic HOTAS devices compatible?
Official documentation reviewed for this FAQ confirms native Ace Combat 8 mapping for the T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO, but it does not establish universal support for every third-party HOTAS. That distinction is important because flight sticks can differ in USB identification, axis handling, button counts, console authentication, and platform-specific firmware.
Use this decision rule:
- Safest choice: a T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO Ace Combat 8 Edition variant labeled for your platform.
- Possible but unconfirmed: another HOTAS that the game or platform recognizes as a standard controller. Its operation is not guaranteed by the official Ace Combat 8 documentation reviewed here.
- Do not assume: that a device working on PC will also work on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Console compatibility can depend on the exact licensed variant.
If you already own another HOTAS, check the manufacturer’s Ace Combat 8 compatibility statement for the precise model and platform. If no device-specific confirmation exists, be prepared for partial operation, missing buttons, or no detection at all. Do not represent an unverified generic device as officially supported.

Does Ace Combat 8 have multiplayer?
Yes. Bandai Namco describes ACE COMBAT ONLINE as a multiplayer-only mode with progression and save data separate from Campaign Mode. Your online reputation and progress therefore belong to the online mode rather than sharing the campaign’s progression structure.
The publisher lists these online activities:
- Co-Op Assault, a cooperative mode for tackling objectives with other pilots.
- Co-Op Warfare, another cooperative format identified separately by the publisher.
- Special missions that sit outside the named co-op formats.
- Limited-time PvP and PvE events, which can rotate as scheduled activities.
The available description establishes the modes and the separate progression model, but it does not specify details such as player-count limits, matchmaking filters, ranked rules, or whether every event is available at launch. Those details should not be inferred from the existence of cross-play alone.
Is Ace Combat 8 cross-play between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC?
Yes. The multiplayer FAQ states that the game has “full cross-platform support.” The North American launch announcement also confirms cross-platform play. For the listed platforms, that means PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam players are intended to play together in the supported online activities.

Cross-play is broader than simply having a multiplayer mode on each platform. It means the platform boundaries do not prevent players on the supported systems from joining the same online ecosystem. The confirmed scope covers the three platforms Bandai Namco lists for the game:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Platform | Cross-play status | Online content identified by the publisher |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Included in full cross-platform support. | Co-Op Assault, Co-Op Warfare, special missions, and limited-time PvP/PvE events. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Included in full cross-platform support. | Co-Op Assault, Co-Op Warfare, special missions, and limited-time PvP/PvE events. |
| Steam | Included in full cross-platform support. | Co-Op Assault, Co-Op Warfare, special missions, and limited-time PvP/PvE events. |
The official wording does not document every practical account or invitation step, nor does it describe a separate cross-play toggle. If you need a particular party, matchmaking, or privacy option, check the final in-game online menus and platform guidance after launch rather than assuming a setting exists.
What is separate between campaign and online play?
ACE COMBAT ONLINE is explicitly described as multiplayer-only, with its own progression and save data separate from Campaign Mode. Treat the two as distinct progression tracks. Advancing through the campaign should not be assumed to advance your online reputation, and online progress should not be assumed to unlock campaign progress.

This separation also helps explain why a player can own the game and still see a different progression state when entering the online mode. The separation is a design characteristic, not evidence of a missing save file.

Troubleshooting HOTAS problems
The game does not detect the stick
- Confirm that the HOTAS variant matches the console family.
- Disconnect and reconnect the device before restarting the game.
- On PC, verify that the operating system and Steam see the device before checking the game’s input settings.
- Test the device in the game’s control screen before entering multiplayer.
An axis moves in the wrong direction
- Open the control assignments and check whether the affected axis has an invert option.
- Move the control through its full range and save the revised assignment.
- Test the change in a noncompetitive session before joining a live event.
Some buttons work but others do not
- Compare the assignments with the T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO native mapping reference.
- Check whether the missing control is assigned to a keyboard, gamepad, or duplicate HOTAS input.
- Remove conflicting assignments, save, and test again.
A friend on another platform cannot join
- Confirm that both players are using one of the three listed platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam.
- Verify that both players have entered ACE COMBAT ONLINE rather than Campaign Mode.
- Recheck the final online or party menus for the game’s current invitation and matchmaking controls.
These checks address connection and configuration issues without assuming undocumented matchmaking behavior or universal third-party-device support.
Bottom line for prospective pilots
Ace Combat 8 supports the multiplayer experience most readers are asking about: ACE COMBAT ONLINE, separate online progression, cooperative modes, special missions, limited-time PvP/PvE events, and full cross-platform play across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. For HOTAS, the firm official answer is narrower: the licensed T.FLIGHT HOTAS NEO Ace Combat 8 Edition has documented native mapping and platform-specific variants. Other HOTAS hardware may work, especially on PC, but official documentation reviewed here does not justify promising compatibility for every model.
