Yes. An Xbox controller with a compatible rechargeable battery pack can keep working while connected by USB, and the pack can charge during gameplay. Microsoft’s current Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable is designed for USB-C Xbox Wireless Controllers, charges while you play or while the console is in standby, and reaches a full charge in under four hours. The important limitation is compatibility: the battery pack, connector and controller generation must match.
What happens when you play while the controller is plugged in?
A compatible rechargeable pack has its own charging circuit. The USB connection supplies power to that circuit while the controller remains available for input, so connecting the cable does not stop a game or switch the controller into a separate charging-only mode. Microsoft describes its current pack as supporting charging “while you play or afterwards, even when your XBOX is in standby.”
The cable must be connected to the controller’s charging port and to a powered USB port. A console USB port is the obvious option, but a suitable USB power adapter or computer port can also supply power. Use the cable supplied with the pack when possible, particularly when you are diagnosing a charging problem.

A full-charge specification is not the same as a guaranteed playtime while charging. Microsoft lists a full charge in under four hours for its current pack, but its published test condition does not say that the measurement was made during continuous gameplay. Heavy vibration, a headset, accessories and other usage can change both charging behavior and battery life.

Check the controller and connector before buying anything
Xbox controllers have used more than one connector and battery system. Look at the physical port on the top of the controller and identify the exact model before ordering a pack.
| Controller or hardware | What to check | Charging guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller with USB-C | USB-C port and a battery pack intended for that controller generation | Microsoft’s current Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable is designed for this group. |
| Xbox One controller | Verify the individual controller and its port; do not assume every Xbox One unit uses the same connector | PowerA’s XBPW0119-01 kit lists Xbox One compatibility, but the physical fit still needs to match your controller. |
| Xbox Series X|S controller | USB-C port and a Series-compatible pack | PowerA lists its XBPW0119-01 kit for Xbox Series X|S, with charging while playing or directly at the battery pack. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Use hardware specifically made for the Elite Series 2 | PowerA’s XBPW0119-01 is explicitly not compatible with this controller. |
| Xbox 360 controller | Legacy Xbox 360 Play & Charge hardware and its original connector | The Xbox 360 manual documents play while charging, but this is a different system from current USB-C packs. |
A USB-C cable by itself does not make every Xbox controller rechargeable. The controller needs a compatible battery pack or an internal rechargeable battery designed to accept charge through that port.

- Charging during play: supported.
- Charging in standby: Microsoft says the pack can charge even when the Xbox is in standby.
- Full-charge time: under four hours according to the product specification.
- Stated battery life: up to 30 hours per charge.
- Qualification on battery life: Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with headsets, additional accessories, usage and other factors. Its testing used preproduction units.
The 30-hour number is therefore a maximum-style manufacturer estimate, not a promise that every player will obtain 30 hours. A wireless headset, frequent vibration, high-volume accessories or different play patterns can reduce the result.
PowerA’s licensed alternative
PowerA’s XBPW0119-01 Play & Charge Kit takes a different approach. The package contains two 1100mAh rechargeable batteries and a 10-foot (3-meter) USB cable. PowerA states up to 20 hours of gameplay per fully charged battery and provides two charging methods: charge while the battery is installed in the controller, or charge directly at the battery pack.
- Listed compatibility: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows.
- Battery capacity: 1100mAh per battery.
- Stated playtime: up to 20 hours per fully charged battery.
- Cable length: 10 feet (3 meters).
- Important exclusion: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
The two-battery design lets one pack charge while the other is in use, provided you have a suitable way to charge the spare. The 20-hour figure is PowerA’s stated maximum-style estimate, so real runtime will depend on the same kinds of usage factors that affect other battery packs.

How to charge and play at the same time
- Identify the port. Confirm whether the controller has USB-C, a legacy micro-USB-style port or Xbox 360-specific hardware. Match the pack to that system.
- Install the battery pack. Remove the existing battery cover and fit the rechargeable pack according to its markings. Make sure the contacts are seated and the cover closes without force.
- Connect the cable. Insert the correct end into the controller and connect the other end to a powered USB port. A loose connector can make the controller appear to work briefly while the battery fails to charge.
- Start or continue your game. With a compatible pack, the controller remains usable while the pack receives charge. You do not need to pause solely because the cable is attached.
- Leave it connected after play if needed. Microsoft says its current pack can continue charging after gameplay and while the Xbox is in standby.
- Disconnect when convenient. Once the pack is charged, remove the cable if you want to return to wireless play. Do not pull the cable sideways, since repeated stress can damage the port.
The exact indicator behavior depends on the controller and pack. If the battery level does not change after a reasonable charging period, use the troubleshooting checks below rather than assuming that every USB connection is charging the pack.
Do rechargeable AA batteries charge through the controller?
Usually, you should treat ordinary rechargeable AA cells as an external-charger product. Connecting a USB cable to the controller does not establish a universal charging method for every AA chemistry, brand or battery holder.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use an external AA charger unless the battery manufacturer explicitly documents charging inside that controller through its USB connection. Mixing ordinary rechargeable AAs with an in-controller charging assumption can leave the cells uncharged, create unreliable runtime or, with an incompatible charging arrangement, create a safety problem. A purpose-built Xbox rechargeable pack is the simpler choice when you want charging through the controller cable.

The Xbox 360 Play & Charge system predates the current USB-C Xbox Wireless Controller packs. Its manual states that you can continue using the controller to play on the Xbox 360 console while it charges. That confirms the play-while-charging behavior for the legacy system, but it does not make Xbox 360 hardware interchangeable with a current USB-C pack.

Troubleshooting when the controller works but the battery does not charge
The controller turns on, but the battery level stays low
- Check that a rechargeable pack, rather than ordinary AA cells, is installed.
- Remove and reseat the pack so its contacts align correctly.
- Try the supplied cable and a different powered USB port.
- Inspect the connector for lint, bent parts or a loose fit.
- Test the pack with the controller switched off. If it still never gains charge, the pack or cable may have failed.
The pack fits physically but is not listed as compatible
Do not rely on the plug alone. Compare the controller model, port and battery-cover shape with the manufacturer’s compatibility list. The PowerA XBPW0119-01 exclusion for Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is an example of why a similar-looking controller is not necessarily supported.
The cable is too short or gameplay is uncomfortable
Use a longer cable that meets the pack’s connection requirements, or choose a kit supplied with a longer lead. PowerA’s listed cable is 10 feet (3 meters), while Microsoft’s cited specification does not state a cable length. Avoid routing a cable where a chair, pet or player can snag the controller and pull on its port.
The pack becomes unusually hot, smells, swells or leaks
Stop using it, disconnect the cable and keep the damaged pack away from flammable materials. Do not puncture, open or continue charging a swollen or leaking battery. Replace it with a pack intended for the exact controller model and dispose of the damaged battery through an appropriate battery-recycling route.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the controller generation and physical connector.
- Check whether the product supports charging while installed in the controller.
- Look for a stated full-charge time if rapid turnaround matters.
- Compare stated runtime only after noting the manufacturer’s usage caveats.
- Check cable length if you plan to play from a sofa or across a room.
- Look specifically for exclusions, including Elite Series 2 compatibility.
- Do not assume rechargeable AA cells can charge through USB.
- Keep the original battery cover and cable if you may switch between battery systems.
What the specifications do—and do not—promise
Manufacturer specifications establish that the named packs support simultaneous play and charging. They do not establish one universal runtime for every Xbox controller, every headset or every brand of rechargeable AA battery. Microsoft’s under-four-hour figure and up-to-30-hour figure apply to its specified USB-C pack; PowerA’s up-to-20-hour figure applies to its 1100mAh battery under its stated product conditions. Treat those numbers as product-specific guidance, then allow for your accessories and usage.
