There is no confirmation in the official sources available here that a new Solo Leveling release permanently removes Sung Jinwoo’s “strongest” status. The headline does not identify the work, format, chapter or volume, or release date. A recent game update’s “Monarch of Shadows’ Successor” label is not proof of a canonical change in the comic or novel story.
Which release is the headline referring to?
“New release” could mean a webtoon episode, a novel installment, a sequel, an anime entry, or a game update. Those formats may tell different versions of the story, so a claim about one cannot automatically be applied to the others. Without a specific release to inspect, the alleged permanent change cannot be verified.
The key distinction is between a character label and a demonstrated, lasting change in the narrative. To establish that Jinwoo has permanently lost a strongest-status designation, the release would need to show or clearly state that change within the relevant story continuity—not merely use a new title, form, or gameplay description.
What do the official sources actually say?
The game material still calls Jinwoo the world’s strongest hunter
In its November 25, 2025 announcement for Solo Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE, Netmarble describes Jinwoo as rising “to become the world’s strongest hunter – the Ultimate Shadow Monarch.” That is the game publisher’s promotional description of the game’s story; it does not establish what happens in every Solo Leveling continuity. Netmarble’s announcement and the official game overview provide that context.
#1 Best Overall
Netmarble’s Sung Jinwoo profile likewise describes his rise from an E-Rank hunter after the Double Dungeon incident, his access to a system that lets him grow stronger, and his ability to turn the dead into Shadow Soldiers. This profile is also game material, not confirmation of a change in the comic or novel.
The “Successor” label is from an ARISE update
A July 30, 2026 Netmarble announcement says a Solo Leveling: ARISE update brings “the Monarch of Shadows’ Successor” into battle and describes Jinwoo taking the form of the Monarch of Shadows. That wording identifies the update’s character framing. The announcement does not say that the main-series story permanently strips Jinwoo of his strongest status or transfers it to someone else. Read Netmarble’s update announcement.
The webtoon side-story announcement does not report a status change
Kakao Entertainment’s January 2023 announcement says the webtoon’s special episodes cover side stories and an epilogue published after the original web novel concluded. It describes the webtoon as an adaptation of Chugong’s novel, but does not claim that Jinwoo permanently loses his status. The announcement reported 14.3 billion cumulative worldwide views at that time; that is a historical figure from 2023, not a current count. Kakao Entertainment’s announcement.
What remains unverified
The official material reviewed does not identify a particular new comic or novel installment as the source of the headline’s claim. It therefore does not establish whether any story makes a change to Jinwoo’s status, whether the change is temporary or permanent, or whether it applies to the original series or a sequel. A fan discussion asking whether Jinwoo remains the strongest in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok signals a reader question, but is not evidence for an answer.

“Strongest” can also mean different things: an explicit title, the most powerful character shown at a particular point, or a game’s playable-character description. Those meanings should not be treated as interchangeable. The game announcements support claims about their own game framing; they cannot settle a claim about a specific webtoon or novel chapter.

For the original printed story, Yen Press lists official Solo Leveling novel volumes and an omnibus, and its series catalog also notes comic editions. That catalog does not identify a volume containing the alleged status change. For Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Tapas lists the digital comics series; episode availability can vary by time and region.
Before treating a claim as confirmed, match it to the exact series and installment, then check the relevant official release or publisher account. If the evidence is only an in-game form or title, it supports a claim about that game—not a permanent change to the source story.
