Yes. A Jio “dongle” needs an activated Jio SIM to connect to the mobile network. Jio’s official product name for this type of portable hotspot is JioFi. You place the SIM inside the JioFi, switch it on, and then connect laptops, phones or tablets to the JioFi Wi-Fi network. Those client devices do not need their own SIM cards merely to use the hotspot.
What people mean by “Jio dongle”
“Jio dongle” and “Jio Wi-Fi dongle” are informal terms. Jio’s support pages call the product JioFi, describing it as a portable Wi-Fi device for Jio 4G connectivity. The explanation below applies to the JioFi setup documented by Jio, not automatically to every USB modem or hotspot sold under the word “dongle.”
A JioFi system has three separate parts:
- The JioFi hardware: the battery-powered hotspot that creates a local Wi-Fi network.
- The Jio SIM: the identity that lets the hotspot register on Jio’s mobile network.
- The service or recharge: the active plan or allowance that supplies mobile data.
Buying the device alone does not provide mobile data, and having a SIM alone does not create a Wi-Fi hotspot unless it is placed in compatible hotspot hardware.

No. Only the JioFi needs the cellular SIM. After it connects to Jio, it broadcasts Wi-Fi. A laptop, smart TV, tablet or second phone joins that Wi-Fi network in the same way it would join a home router. The client device uses Wi-Fi for the local connection and does not need a separate Jio SIM for that session.

You would still need a SIM in a client device if you want that device to use its own mobile network when it is away from the JioFi. The JioFi arrangement is a shared hotspot connection, not a way to give every device independent cellular service.
What you need before setup
Hardware and power
- A JioFi unit with its battery installed and charged sufficiently to complete setup.
- The SIM tray or slot and the battery cover, which must be opened according to the markings on your model.
- A Wi-Fi client device, such as a phone or laptop, for the first connection.
An activated Jio SIM
Jio’s setup instruction is explicit: insert an activated Jio SIM into the JioFi before switching it on. A new SIM therefore has to complete Jio’s identity and activation process first. New-SIM onboarding can involve in-store identity and address documents. Jio also describes an eKYC route using a biometric fingerprint and Aadhaar details; requirements can change, so confirm the current list with Jio when ordering.
A current data service
The SIM must have service available for data use. A hotspot can power up and show a Wi-Fi name even when the SIM has no usable plan, has expired service or has not finished activation. Treat the device, SIM and recharge as separate requirements.

How to set up a JioFi step by step
- Obtain the SIM and complete onboarding. Ask for a Jio SIM intended for use in the JioFi, or verify that your existing SIM and plan are compatible before inserting it.
- Finish activation. Do not assume that receiving the SIM means it is ready. Complete any required verification and wait for confirmation of activation.
- Insert the battery and SIM. With the JioFi switched off, open the cover, fit the battery and place the SIM in the orientation shown by the tray or diagram.
- Switch on the JioFi. Allow the unit time to register on the Jio network. Signal and status indicators may take a short time to settle.
- Find the Wi-Fi network. On your laptop, phone or other client, open Wi-Fi settings and select the network name broadcast by the JioFi.
- Enter the password. Jio says the default Wi-Fi password is printed inside the battery cover. Type it exactly, including capitalization or symbols if shown.
- Test data access. Open a simple webpage or app. If Wi-Fi connects but data does not work, check activation, signal and the service or recharge rather than repeatedly changing the Wi-Fi password.
Once the first client has connected, other Wi-Fi devices can join using the same network credentials, subject to the hotspot’s capacity and your data allowance.
Activating a data-only JioFi SIM
Jio provides a separate tele-verification process for a data-only JioFi SIM. Its published instruction directs the customer to call 1800-890-1977 from a mobile number. During the process, you may be asked for an alternate-number PIN, the last four digits of an accepted identity document, or assistance from a contact-centre adviser.
Keep the SIM details and the identity information used during onboarding available before calling. If the instructions presented to you differ from this sequence, follow the current Jio guidance for your order; onboarding flows can be revised. Jio states that, after successful tele-verification, the SIM activates immediately. “Immediately” refers to activation completion, not a guarantee that every handset, hotspot indicator or data session will refresh at the same instant.

Which SIM should you use?
The safest choice is a SIM supplied and activated for Jio service and confirmed as compatible with your JioFi model. A SIM that works in a phone is not automatically guaranteed to work in every hotspot, because device compatibility, account provisioning and plan rules can differ.
Jio says an activated SIM obtained for JioFi may be used in another compatible 4G LTE device. That is a conditional statement, not a promise of universal compatibility. Before moving the SIM, check that the second device supports the relevant Jio LTE bands, accepts the SIM size and is not restricted by another operator or firmware.
Is JioFi a 4G or 5G dongle?
Jio’s cited support answer says that all JioFi models currently available in the market are 4G-compatible. The same material does not establish that a JioFi connects to Jio’s 5G network. Do not buy or configure a JioFi expecting 5G speeds simply because the SIM itself may be associated with a newer mobile plan.

If 5G is essential, verify three things for the exact product and location before purchase:
- Whether the hardware has a stated 5G radio, rather than only 4G LTE.
- Whether the device firmware and SIM provisioning support the intended network.
- Whether Jio lists 5G hotspot use for that model and your region.
Without those confirmations, describe a JioFi as a 4G portable hotspot.

Device, SIM and recharge: what each purchase covers

Jio’s M2S cashback FAQ illustrates why offer details need checking. That page lists a device price of ₹2,800 and an offer involving ₹1,500 in vouchers, with an eligible recharge having a minimum 28-day validity. It also says the SIM must be inside the device and the device switched on when the eligible recharge is made. Those are conditions of the described promotion, not permanent rules for every Jio plan. Confirm the current price, voucher terms, validity requirement and eligibility immediately before relying on them.

Troubleshooting common JioFi setup problems

A Wi-Fi connection proves only that the local wireless link is working. It does not prove that the SIM has registered on Jio or that a valid data allowance remains.
How many devices can connect?
The exact number depends on the JioFi model and its firmware. The cited support material establishes the hotspot method—clients connect over Wi-Fi—but does not provide one universal device-count figure for every model. Expect performance to vary as more devices share the same radio link and mobile data connection. For a precise limit, use the specifications for the model printed on your unit or its current support page.
When a JioFi SIM can be useful outside the hotspot
A JioFi-specific SIM can be convenient when you want one data account dedicated to a portable router. Jio says an activated SIM obtained for JioFi may be placed in another compatible 4G LTE device. Before doing so, consider:
- Whether the destination device accepts the physical SIM format.
- Whether it supports Jio’s required LTE bands and network settings.
- Whether the account or offer limits use to a particular device type.
- Whether moving the SIM leaves the JioFi without service for other household devices.
Compatibility is a technical and account-level condition, so test only after checking the destination device and the terms attached to the SIM.
Questions to check before buying or activating
- Is the product really a JioFi model? “Dongle” is a broad informal label; confirm the model and network generation.
- Is the SIM activated? Complete the required verification rather than relying on the SIM’s delivery status.
- Is there a current data plan? Device purchase and mobile service are separate transactions.
- Does the offer have special conditions? Promotional voucher amounts, prices, validity periods and recharge requirements can expire or change.
- Do you need 5G? Jio’s cited information identifies currently available JioFi devices as 4G-compatible and does not establish JioFi 5G support.
The practical answer
A JioFi hotspot cannot provide Jio mobile data without a compatible, activated Jio SIM and an active service or recharge. Insert that SIM before powering on the unit, then connect your laptop, phone or tablet through the JioFi Wi-Fi network. The connected devices do not need separate SIM cards for hotspot use. Treat any price, voucher or recharge requirement as specific to the offer and date shown by Jio, and verify the exact model if you need capabilities beyond 4G.
