Yes, a higher refresh rate can use more phone battery, but there is no universal “120 Hz costs X%” penalty. Google says Pixel’s Smooth Display increases battery usage, while also noting that the display may raise or lower its refresh rate automatically. The real effect depends on your phone model, refresh-rate range, brightness, network, apps and the type of content on screen.
What refresh rate means on a phone
Refresh rate is the number of times a display can update its image each second, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz screen can present up to 60 updates per second; a 120 Hz screen can present up to 120. Higher rates can make scrolling, animations and supported games look smoother and can reduce the visible jump between frames.
The setting does not automatically mean the panel runs at its maximum every second. Many current phones use an adaptive mode that changes the rate according to what is on screen. Static text may use a lower rate, while rapid scrolling or compatible video can trigger a higher one. Google’s Pixel specifications describe this adjustment as a way to balance viewing quality and battery performance.

Display work
At a higher rate, the display driver has more updates to process. The panel electronics and, depending on the content, the graphics system may also stay active more often. That additional work can increase power use compared with showing the same content at a lower rate.

Content determines the workload
A 120 Hz option matters most during motion: fast scrolling, system animations, high-frame-rate games and interfaces that render frequent changes. Reading a still webpage does not require 120 distinct updates for every second, so an adaptive display may reduce its rate. Brightness, cellular signal strength, GPS, camera use, background synchronization and processor-intensive apps can consume more energy than the refresh-rate difference in a particular session.
Adaptive panels change the comparison
A phone advertised as “120 Hz” may have a range rather than a fixed 120 Hz mode. A panel that can fall to a very low rate while idle can spend less energy than one locked at 120 Hz. Conversely, a phone that remains near its upper range during much of your use can show a larger difference when you select a lower fixed rate.
What Google’s Pixel documentation shows
Google’s Pixel display-settings guidance says Smooth Display can automatically raise the refresh rate for some content and explicitly states: “This increases battery usage.” The same guidance says Smooth Display is disabled when Battery Saver is enabled. The examples below are model-specific behavior, not a rule for every Android phone.
| Pixel model | Refresh-rate information in Google documentation | What the range means |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8a | Up to 120 Hz | The phone can use a rate below the maximum; 120 Hz is an upper limit, not a constant. |
| Pixel Fold | Up to 120 Hz | Adaptive behavior can select a lower rate for suitable content. |
| Pixel 8 Pro | 1–120 Hz | The documented range includes very low refresh rates as well as the 120 Hz maximum. |
| Pixel 8 | 60–120 Hz | The documented range does not extend below 60 Hz. |
| Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a | Up to 90 Hz | The maximum is lower than 120 Hz, so comparisons with a 120 Hz phone are not equivalent. |
| Pixel 7 Pro | Up to 120 Hz | The phone can reach 120 Hz but may use lower rates depending on content and settings. |
Google’s hardware specifications also list refresh-rate ranges such as 1–120 Hz and explain that display behavior can adjust to optimize viewing and battery performance. Therefore, the label on a phone’s specifications should not be interpreted as proof that it refreshes continuously at the highest number.
How much battery does 120 Hz use compared with 60 Hz?
The official Google material does not provide a controlled, general percentage, runtime loss or hours-per-charge figure for 60 Hz versus 120 Hz. Its battery descriptions use mixed activities—such as calls, mobile data, standby, web browsing, audio and video streaming—and warn that actual life varies. Those profiles cannot isolate refresh rate.

A claim such as “120 Hz drains twice as fast” or “you lose exactly 10%” is therefore too broad unless it identifies a particular phone, software version, brightness, network, app or test procedure. Results from one handset cannot be transferred reliably to another because panel technology, adaptive limits, battery capacity and power management differ.
What a valid comparison would control
- The same phone, battery condition and software version.
- Identical brightness or an identical brightness measurement.
- The same Wi-Fi or cellular connection and signal conditions.
- The same apps, video, game or scripted scrolling pattern.
- The same temperature, volume, notifications and background activity.
- The same test duration, starting charge and ending-charge measurement.
Without those controls, a battery result combines refresh-rate effects with other variables. Even a carefully controlled result would describe that device and workload, not every 120 Hz phone.
When you are most likely to notice extra drain
Long periods of active scrolling
Social feeds, browsers and documents that you scroll continuously can keep the display in a high-refresh state. The difference may be more relevant during an extended session than during occasional checks of a mostly static screen.
High-frame-rate games
Games that render above 60 frames per second can make practical use of a 90 or 120 Hz panel. They also load the processor and graphics hardware, so the total gaming drain cannot be attributed to the display alone.
Bright outdoor use
Increasing brightness to overcome sunlight can draw substantial power. If your phone is losing charge quickly outdoors, brightness and cellular radio activity may dominate the refresh-rate contribution.

Video with a lower frame rate
Many films and television programs are mastered below 120 frames per second. A high-refresh display can still improve interface motion around the video, but the panel does not create additional original frames in the source material. Adaptive software may select a lower rate where appropriate.

How to choose the right setting
Keep adaptive or high refresh enabled when smoothness is your priority
Use the manufacturer’s adaptive or smooth-display option if scrolling quality and responsive-looking animations matter more than extracting the longest possible runtime. Observe a normal day rather than relying on a promised percentage: your own mix of reading, video, gaming and standby determines the result.
Reduce refresh rate when endurance matters most
If your phone offers a standard, 60 Hz or similar mode, selecting it limits the maximum refresh rate. On Pixel phones, the control is under Settings > Display & touch > Smooth Display; wording and placement can differ by model and Android version. Turning the feature off may make motion look less fluid, but it removes the adaptive high-refresh behavior.
Use Battery Saver for a broader power reduction
On supported Pixel devices, Google says Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver to review the available options. Battery Saver also changes other system behavior, so it is not a refresh-rate-only experiment. Menu names and the exact restrictions vary across manufacturers.
Adjust the bigger battery variables first
- Lower screen brightness or enable adaptive brightness.
- Prefer Wi-Fi where cellular reception is weak.
- Restrict background activity for apps that rarely need real-time updates.
- Turn off location, Bluetooth or hotspot functions when you are not using them.
- Install system and app updates, which can include power-management fixes.
- Check the battery-usage screen to identify the apps actually consuming charge.
How to measure the effect on your own phone
You can make a useful personal comparison without claiming that it applies to every device. The goal is to compare two settings while keeping everything else as similar as possible.

- Charge the phone to the same starting level on two separate test days, ideally near full charge.
- Record the model, Android version, display mode, brightness setting and whether Battery Saver is active.
- Choose a repeatable workload, such as 60 minutes of the same video, a fixed web-reading route or a scripted scrolling session.
- Use the same network, volume, case, room temperature and notification conditions.
- Run the workload once with adaptive/high refresh enabled and once with the lower-rate mode enabled.
- Compare the percentage-point change and screen-on time, while noting that battery percentage gauges are estimates and small differences may be noisy.
- Repeat each condition if possible and average the observations instead of treating one run as a definitive measurement.
Do not compare two different phones and label the difference a refresh-rate penalty. That comparison includes battery size, display efficiency, processor, modem and software differences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your result may not match someone else’s
Different refresh-rate ranges
One phone may switch between 1 and 120 Hz, while another may operate only between 60 and 120 Hz. Their idle and scrolling behavior can therefore differ even when both advertise 120 Hz.
Different display and brightness characteristics
Panel size, resolution, brightness level and display-driver efficiency affect power use. A larger or brighter screen can change the balance between display power and the rest of the phone.
Different software decisions
Operating-system updates and individual apps decide when high refresh is allowed. A game may request a high rate, while a reading app or video player may not. Manufacturers can also change those policies in updates.

Common misconceptions
“A 120 Hz phone always runs at 120 Hz”
Not necessarily. Google documents adaptive ranges and automatic increases for some content. The maximum describes capability, not constant operation.
“A higher refresh rate doubles battery consumption”
No general evidence supports that statement. The available official guidance confirms increased usage but does not quantify a universal multiplier.
“Battery Saver only changes refresh rate”
On Pixels, Battery Saver disables Smooth Display, but the mode also affects other power-related behavior. A longer runtime in Battery Saver cannot be assigned solely to the display setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“A battery percentage from a community post is an official measurement”
Questions posted in user communities, including requests for a 120 Hz-versus-60 Hz percentage, are useful descriptions of what people want to know but are not controlled technical tests.
A practical decision rule
- Choose high or adaptive refresh if you value fluid scrolling and your normal day already ends with sufficient charge.
- Choose the lower-rate mode if you routinely need maximum endurance and are willing to trade some motion smoothness.
- Use Battery Saver temporarily during travel, emergencies or long periods away from a charger when broader restrictions are acceptable.
- Check your phone’s battery-usage report before blaming refresh rate; a bright screen, weak signal or a misbehaving app may be the larger cause.
The defensible conclusion is directional rather than numerical: higher refresh can drain a phone faster, but the size of the effect is device- and usage-dependent. Google’s Pixel documentation supports that tradeoff and provides model-specific adaptive ranges; it does not support a universal battery percentage for 120 Hz.
