Yes—if it is a Nintendo 2DS-family system. The original Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL run Nintendo 3DS games normally in 2D, without the glasses-free stereoscopic effect. The New Nintendo 2DS XL also runs software made exclusively for New Nintendo 3DS systems. A generic handheld with a flat, non-3D screen is different: portability alone does not make it compatible with Nintendo 3DS cartridges or software.
What “properly” means on a 2DS
Nintendo designed the 2DS as a member of the 3DS family with the stereoscopic display removed. Games still run through the same Nintendo software environment, use the two-screen layout, and respond to the same controls. The upper screen simply presents a conventional 2D image instead of separate images that create depth.
Nintendo’s explanation of the 3DS feature describes stereoscopic 3D as an optional display effect controlled by the system’s depth slider. Turning that effect off does not disable the game. On a 2DS, the screen is permanently configured for 2D, which is the supported way to play when you do not want glasses-free 3D.

Why the New Nintendo 2DS XL is usually the safest 2D choice
If your priority is broad official compatibility without stereoscopic 3D, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is the clearest choice. Nintendo states that it plays all existing Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games in 2D and specifically includes New Nintendo 3DS software, such as Super Nintendo Virtual Console games.
That distinction is important because the original 2DS and the New 2DS XL are not equivalent internally. Some later games use the extra processor, memory or controls introduced with New Nintendo 3DS systems. Those titles will not run on the original 2DS, even though both consoles have 2D screens.

The statement applies to the Nintendo software supported by that hardware family. It does not mean every game sold for every Nintendo console, nor does it make a 2DS compatible with unrelated cartridges. A Nintendo 2DS-family system accepts Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS formats that Nintendo lists as compatible; it is not a universal retro-cartridge reader.

What you lose by playing in 2D
You lose the depth effect, not the game itself. 3D-enabled games continue to render their normal scenes, menus, text and animations on a flat display. A title may use depth as an artistic enhancement, but its underlying levels, rules and story are not removed when 3D is unavailable.
Some games use the 3D slider for visual impact rather than essential interaction. Others include optional effects that are easier to perceive in stereoscopic mode. Nintendo’s 2DS design treats those effects as nonessential: the software is expected to remain playable in 2D.
Controls and two-screen layout
A 2DS still has the touch screen, directional controls, buttons, shoulder triggers and two-screen arrangement expected by 3DS software. A game that uses touch input, the microphone, cameras or motion controls can still call those functions on compatible 2DS hardware. The difference is the upper-screen display mode, not a replacement of the control system with a generic single-screen interface.

New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive games: the key exception
Check every title marked “New Nintendo 3DS” or “New 3DS” before buying an original 2DS. Nintendo’s compatibility information distinguishes these games from ordinary 3DS software:

- New Nintendo 2DS XL supports New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive titles, displayed in 2D.
- Original Nintendo 2DS does not support those exclusive titles.
- Original Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL also do not support them, despite having a 3D display.
This is a hardware-generation issue, not a 2D-versus-3D issue. Buying a 3D-capable original 3DS does not solve the compatibility limitation; the relevant requirement is New Nintendo 3DS-class hardware.
How to check a game listing
- Read the exact system label on the box, cartridge listing or Nintendo product page.
- Look for “New Nintendo 3DS,” “New 3DS” or wording that says the game requires New Nintendo 3DS.
- If the listing only says “Nintendo 3DS,” it is generally referring to the standard 3DS software family, but verify unusual accessories or editions.
- For a used cartridge, ask the seller for a clear photograph of the front and back labels and compare the region and system requirement.
Is a generic handheld without 3D automatically compatible?
No. “No glasses-free 3D” describes a display characteristic, not a software license or hardware architecture. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance identifies Nintendo 3DS-family systems as the supported systems for Nintendo 3DS software. A Windows, Android or Linux handheld with a two-screen-looking case may still be unable to read 3DS cartridges, decrypt the software or reproduce the required controls.
Third-party devices may advertise emulation, but compatibility must be judged for the exact model, operating-system build, emulator version and game. Do not assume that a device runs a game correctly because another model with a similar processor does. A claim of “3DS support” can mean that an emulator launches a menu, while individual games may have graphical, audio, speed, save-state or control problems.
Evidence to require from a third-party device
- The manufacturer’s documentation names Nintendo 3DS emulation specifically, not merely “retro” or “Nintendo” support.
- The device has a practical way to reproduce both screens and touch input.
- The documented software setup identifies the emulator, operating-system version and supported file format.
- Independent testing covers the particular game you want, not only a demonstration title.
- The method uses software and game copies you are legally entitled to use in your jurisdiction.
Without that evidence, the reliable answer is that the handheld is unconfirmed—not that it plays 3DS games properly.

Nintendo DS and DSi backward compatibility
The 2DS family also supports most Nintendo DS software. Nintendo notes that DS and DSi games display in 2D, so the lack of stereoscopic 3D is not a problem for those titles either.
There is an older-hardware exception: some DS games require accessories that plug into the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. 3DS-family systems do not have that slot, so those accessory-dependent games are not supported. This caveat is separate from ordinary 3DS-game compatibility and does not mean that standard DS cartridges fail.
Region compatibility when buying used hardware or games
Check region before paying for a console or cartridge. Nintendo’s UK product information warns that software from other regions cannot be used on the New Nintendo 2DS XL. A console purchased in one market may therefore reject a cartridge or software release from another market, even when the title and hardware model appear identical.

- Confirm the console’s region from its system settings, packaging or seller description.
- Confirm that the game cartridge belongs to the same supported region.
- Ask whether the system has been modified; unofficial software can change behavior and support conditions.
- Test both screens for dead pixels, severe yellowing, touch accuracy and hinge damage.
- Test the cartridge slot, SD or microSD slot, charging port, buttons, circle pad, shoulder buttons, cameras and speakers.
- Verify that the battery charges and does not swell, overheat or lose power immediately.
- Check that the console can connect to its intended account and software services, recognizing that Nintendo’s online services and storefront availability can change over time.
Availability and condition today
Nintendo has ended manufacturing of the 3DS family. New-in-box stock is therefore unusual, and current listings are generally used or refurbished. Availability, condition and price vary by region and seller; a historical launch price is not a dependable indication of what a particular listing is worth now.

For the broadest 2D compatibility, search specifically for a New Nintendo 2DS XL rather than relying on a listing that says only “2DS.” The “New” designation is the part that identifies support for New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software.
Common problems and what they mean
The cartridge is rejected
First check region, then confirm that the cartridge is a genuine Nintendo 3DS or DS product and that the console contacts are clean. If the title is New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive, an original 2DS cannot run it. A generic handheld may reject it simply because it has no official cartridge support.
The game starts but the screen looks different
On a 2DS, a flat 2D image is expected. The console is not defective because it does not show depth. If the image is distorted, missing a screen, or has persistent artifacts, test another cartridge and inspect the display and software settings.
The game requires a feature the console lacks
Check whether the requirement is New Nintendo 3DS hardware, a camera, motion input or a discontinued accessory. A 2DS can remove stereoscopic depth while retaining many other system features, but it cannot add hardware that a particular title requires.
A third-party emulator runs slowly or incorrectly
Update only through the device maker’s documented process, confirm the emulator’s settings for dual screens and touch input, and test a legally obtained game file known to be supported. If the exact model and title have no reliable compatibility evidence, changing graphics settings may not solve the underlying limitation.
Decision guide
- Want official 3DS cartridges with no 3D? Choose a Nintendo 2DS-family system.
- Want the widest 2D compatibility? Choose the New Nintendo 2DS XL, subject to region, condition and availability.
- Only need standard 3DS games and want the least expensive official option? An original Nintendo 2DS can work, provided none of your games require New Nintendo 3DS hardware.
- Considering a non-Nintendo handheld? Treat compatibility as unverified until documentation and model-specific testing confirm the games you intend to play.
Bottom line
A handheld does not need glasses-free 3D to play Nintendo 3DS games properly. Nintendo’s 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL are official examples: they run compatible 3DS games in 2D. The New Nintendo 2DS XL is the safer choice for a complete 2D library because it also supports New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software. A generic non-Nintendo handheld is not an automatic substitute, and its compatibility must be proven for the exact device and game.
