Yes—PS5 supports mice over USB and Bluetooth at the system level. That does not mean every gaming mouse will work, or that every game accepts mouse input. Sony warns that “Not all devices work with your console,” and game developers decide whether keyboard and mouse controls are enabled in their games. Confirm both the exact mouse model and the specific game before buying.

This guide explains how to check compatibility, connect a mouse, choose useful features, and diagnose failures without relying on unsupported “best mouse” lists. No universal winner, compatibility percentage, or laboratory test is established by the available official documentation.

What “works on PS5” actually means

Mouse compatibility has three separate layers. Treating them as one is the reason a mouse can appear to connect yet fail in a game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. The PS5 recognizes the device

At the console level, Sony documents USB and Bluetooth mouse support. A wired mouse can be connected through USB; a Bluetooth model can be paired through the Accessories settings. Recognition only means the operating system can communicate with the device.

2. The console exposes basic controls

When a compatible mouse is recognized, PS5 provides settings for handedness and pointer speed at Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories. These are console-level controls, not a promise that a mouse maker’s entire PC software suite is available.

3. The game accepts mouse input

Each game decides whether mouse and keyboard controls are enabled. The 2020 PlayStation FAQ explains that support is controlled by game developers, and SteelSeries notes that “It is common for game developers to disable mouse input for their games” (PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ; SteelSeries support). A mouse can pass the first two layers and still do nothing in a particular title.

These layers also explain why two owners can report different results with what appears to be the same product. One may be using a different revision, connection mode, or game version. A successful PS5 menu test confirms only the console side; it does not certify a mouse for every game in your library.

Check these facts before you buy

Use this checklist for the exact mouse SKU and the game you intend to play. “Gaming mouse” on the product name is not a compatibility certification.

  • Game support: Look for current documentation from the game developer or publisher stating that mouse input works on PS5. Do not infer support from PC, Xbox, or another PlayStation title.
  • Connection mode: Confirm whether the model is documented for USB or Bluetooth use on PS5. If it uses a proprietary wireless receiver, find model-specific console instructions; Sony’s general page does not certify every wireless dongle.
  • Exact model and revision: Check the full SKU, not just a product family name. Different revisions can use different receivers or firmware.
  • Operating system requirements: Determine which settings can be changed on the mouse itself and which require a Windows or macOS application. A PC utility does not automatically run on PS5.
  • Stored profiles: If you need a particular CPI (often called DPI), polling rate, or button layout, verify that the mouse can save it to onboard memory and that the console can use the stored profile.
  • Physical fit: Choose a shape and handedness that suit your grip and available desk space. PS5 does not provide a way to correct an uncomfortable shape.
  • Return policy: Because compatibility is model- and game-dependent, a return window is useful if the official checks are incomplete.

Questions that prevent an expensive assumption

  • Is the listing describing the wired model, a wireless model, or a bundle with more than one receiver?
  • Does “PlayStation compatible” refer to PS5 specifically, or only to a manufacturer’s broader console category?
  • Can the mouse be used at its default settings if you do not own a computer for configuration?
  • Which buttons are standard mouse inputs, and which depend on a desktop remapping utility?
  • Will the game recognize a mouse in its menus, gameplay, or both?
  • Is the support statement current for the present game version and console software?

Answering these questions is more useful than choosing by a headline sensor number. The official pages do not establish that a more expensive mouse, a particular weight, or a higher polling rate guarantees PS5 or game compatibility.

USB, Bluetooth, and receiver-based wireless: what the evidence supports

Connection What PS5 documentation establishes What you must still verify
USB cable PS5 supports USB mice at the system level, with mouse settings available in Accessories. The exact mouse, its firmware behavior, and whether your game accepts mouse input.
Bluetooth PS5 provides a Bluetooth Accessories pairing path and can display nearby devices. Whether the exact Bluetooth mouse is compatible. A device appearing in discovery is not proof that it will operate correctly.
Wireless receiver or dongle The general Sony instructions do not certify every proprietary receiver. Manufacturer instructions for the exact model, receiver mode, firmware, and the target game.

USB is the simplest first test because it avoids pairing mode and battery questions, but “simplest” is not the same as universally supported. Bluetooth can be convenient when the model’s Bluetooth mode is explicitly documented, while receiver-based wireless must be checked against the maker’s console instructions. A receiver that works on a computer should not be treated as automatically certified on PS5.

Sony’s support article is the controlling setup reference for the console and explicitly cautions that “Not all devices work with your console” (PlayStation Support: How to use a keyboard and mouse on PS5 consoles). Follow the mouse manufacturer’s instructions in addition to Sony’s steps.

How to connect a USB gaming mouse

  1. Turn on the PS5 and connect the mouse to a USB port with its cable.
  2. Wait briefly for the console to recognize the device.
  3. Open Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories.
  4. Check whether the mouse settings page appears. Adjust handedness and pointer speed if needed.
  5. Open the target game and check its own controller, input, or keyboard-and-mouse settings. The game must support mouse input independently of the PS5 menu.

If the mouse works in the Accessories screen but not in the game, the likely issue is game-level support rather than the USB connection. Verify the title’s current developer documentation before changing hardware. If the settings page never appears, check the cable, try another port, and confirm the model’s documented connection mode before concluding that the game is responsible.

How to pair a Bluetooth gaming mouse

  1. Put the mouse into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its manual. A model with several wireless modes may require selecting Bluetooth rather than its receiver mode.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
  3. Wait for the mouse to appear, then select it.
  4. After pairing, open Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories to view available mouse controls.
  5. Test the mouse in the PS5 interface, then verify mouse support inside the game.

Sony notes that incompatible devices may still appear in the Bluetooth discovery list. Discovery is therefore only a pairing attempt, not a compatibility guarantee (PlayStation Support).

Pairing pitfalls

A multi-mode mouse can be discoverable in the wrong mode, so check its selector or button before repeating a scan. If it was previously paired with another device, disconnect that device and put the mouse back into explicit pairing mode. Do not interpret a device name in the list as proof that its buttons, sensor, or game input will function correctly.

How to verify a game before spending money

Because there is no universal PS5 game-compatibility list in the cited documentation, check each title separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Visit the game publisher or developer’s current support page.
  2. Search for the title plus “PS5 mouse and keyboard support” or “console mouse input.”
  3. Confirm that the statement applies to the PS5 version, not only the PC version or a different console.
  4. Check whether mouse input is available in all modes. Some games can limit keyboard-and-mouse controls to menus, accessibility functions, or selected modes.
  5. Look for notes about required settings, adapters, or unsupported competitive modes.
  6. Save the page or support-ticket reference if the wording is ambiguous; policies can change after updates.

Do not treat another player’s setup, a retailer filter, or a mouse appearing in Bluetooth search as proof for your game. A filtered manufacturer catalog can help locate products advertised for PlayStation, but it does not establish per-game support (SteelSeries PlayStation compatibility filter).

Which mouse features matter on PS5?

Shape and hand orientation

Choose a right-handed, left-handed, or ambidextrous design that matches how you hold the mouse. Sony’s handedness setting changes the console’s control behavior; it cannot make a physically right-handed shell comfortable for a left-handed player. Compare the shell dimensions, thumb-button placement, and grip style in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Buttons and remapping

Extra buttons are useful only if the game recognizes them and the desired assignments can be stored without a computer. Check whether the mouse saves non-macro keybinds onboard and how the console identifies those buttons. Avoid assuming that every programmable control works in every title. A button that depends on a software layer may revert to its factory function when the mouse is connected to PS5.

CPI, polling rate, and sensitivity

The supplied official material does not establish a universally best CPI, polling rate, sensor specification, or mouse weight for PS5. Select a model whose settings can be configured in a supported desktop application and saved to onboard memory if you need a specific setup. Then adjust the game’s own sensitivity controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Onboard profiles

SteelSeries states that supported mice can retain CPI, polling rate, and non-macro keybinds in an onboard profile for console use. Its support guidance also says macros and lighting adjustments do not save to the device in this scenario (SteelSeries: Does my mouse work on consoles?). This is a SteelSeries-specific documented example, not a rule for every manufacturer. Check the exact model’s manual for profile slots, retained settings, and whether switching profiles requires software.

Configure and save a profile on a computer before moving the mouse to the console if the maker requires desktop software. Confirm which settings survive unplugging and which are merely active while the application is running. Never assume that a macro, lighting preset, or advanced remap transfers simply because it appears in the PC application.

Wired versus wireless priorities

A USB connection removes battery charging and receiver-pairing variables, but it leaves cable length and desk routing to manage. Bluetooth avoids a cable but adds pairing and compatibility checks. Receiver-based wireless can offer a different feature set; because Sony’s general page does not certify every dongle, treat it as a model-specific decision rather than assuming it is equivalent to USB or Bluetooth.

Requirements, ownership and cost checks

The cited Sony and manufacturer pages do not provide a universal price range or prove that a premium mouse is more compatible. Set a spending limit, then compare only models that pass the device and game checks. A low-priced mouse that cannot be used in your game is not a saving, while an expensive model whose essential features require a computer may be unnecessary for a console-only setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for practical requirements: the correct cable or receiver, a USB port, pairing instructions, and—when onboard configuration is required—temporary access to a Windows or macOS computer. Read the retailer’s exact model description and keep the receipt until the mouse has passed both a PS5 menu test and an in-game test. Do not buy an unverified adapter or alternate receiver solely because a listing claims broad console support.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The mouse never appears or moves in PS5 menus

  • For USB, reconnect the cable directly to the console and try another USB port.
  • For Bluetooth, repeat pairing mode and remove stale pairings before trying again.
  • Confirm that the mouse is in the intended connection mode; multi-mode mice can be set to Bluetooth, USB, or a proprietary receiver.
  • Check the manufacturer’s PS5 instructions and firmware notes for the exact SKU.
  • Test with the console’s Other Accessories page. If no controls appear, treat the model as unconfirmed rather than assuming the game is at fault.

The mouse appears in Bluetooth search but cannot be used

Discovery does not prove compatibility. Unpair it, restart the console and mouse, and consult the model’s compatibility documentation. If Sony’s setup page does not recognize the device after a fresh pairing attempt, choose a model with explicit PS5 support rather than relying on the listing alone.

The mouse works in menus but not in a game

This is usually a game-support question. Open the title’s current control settings and developer support page. Look for a separate “mouse and keyboard,” “input device,” or “PC-style controls” option. If the developer disables mouse input, no PS5 pointer-speed adjustment or mouse profile can override that decision.

Buttons, macros, or lighting behave differently

Console support can be limited to the settings stored in the mouse. Reconfigure the profile on a computer, save only the features the manufacturer documents as onboard-compatible, and reconnect the mouse. SteelSeries specifically distinguishes retained CPI, polling rate, and non-macro keybinds from macros and lighting tweaks; other brands may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input feels too fast or too slow

Adjust pointer speed under Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories, then tune the game’s own sensitivity setting. Change one control at a time so you can identify which setting affects menus and which affects gameplay. Do not use a generic “best DPI” number as a substitute for the game’s documented controls.

Practical buying decisions

If you mainly play one known mouse-enabled game

Start with that game’s support page, then shortlist mice whose exact models and connection modes are documented for PS5. An onboard-profile model is worthwhile only if you need settings that the console cannot configure and the manufacturer confirms they are retained.

If you play several games

Assume support varies by title. Favor a mouse that can connect through a documented PS5 method and retain basic settings without requiring desktop software during play. Keep the receipt and verify every frequently played game before discarding your existing controller setup.

If you want a mouse for menus as well as games

System-level support may be sufficient for navigation and text entry, provided the model is recognized. Game support remains a separate check; menu operation does not imply gameplay compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If wireless convenience is the priority

Decide whether Bluetooth or a receiver-based mode is documented for your exact model. Pairing convenience is not a reason to skip the compatibility check, and a receiver that works on a PC is not automatically certified for PS5.

If you do not own a computer

Prefer a model that offers usable defaults and documented onboard storage. If changing CPI, polling rate, or button assignments requires a desktop application, make sure you can complete that setup before purchase. Do not count on installing the maker’s utility on PS5.

What is not established

  • There is no official, universal percentage for PS5 mouse compatibility in the cited sources.
  • No single mouse is established as the objectively best PS5 choice.
  • The available material does not support a universal recommendation for weight, sensor type, CPI, or polling rate.
  • No current, comprehensive game-by-game compatibility list is supplied by the cited Sony and SteelSeries pages.
  • No hands-on test was performed, so model-specific performance claims would be speculation.

These limits are useful decision information: compatibility must be confirmed for the game, model, and connection mode rather than inferred from a product category.

Bottom line for PS5 mouse buyers

A gaming mouse can work on PS5, but “works” has to pass two independent checks: the console must recognize the exact device, and the game developer must allow mouse input. Use Sony’s USB or Bluetooth setup paths, verify the exact SKU and connection method, and treat onboard-profile features as manufacturer-specific. If either the device or the game lacks documented support, there is no reliable reason to expect a purchase to work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any gaming mouse on PS5?

No. PS5 supports USB and Bluetooth mice at the system level, but Sony warns that not all devices work. Check the exact model, connection mode, and manufacturer instructions.

Why does my mouse work in the PS5 menu but not in a game?

Game developers decide whether mouse input is enabled. A title can ignore the mouse even when the console recognizes it, so check the game’s current support page and input settings.

Does a Bluetooth mouse appearing in PS5 search mean it is compatible?

No. Sony says incompatible devices may still appear in the Bluetooth discovery list. Pairing visibility is not proof of usable operation.

Are wireless receiver mice supported?

Do not assume so. Sony’s general instructions do not certify every proprietary receiver. Verify the exact model, receiver mode, and console instructions from the manufacturer.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Can I change DPI or polling rate on PS5?

PS5 provides handedness and pointer-speed controls. Other settings depend on the mouse. SteelSeries documents onboard retention of CPI, polling rate, and non-macro keybinds on supported mice, but this should not be generalized to every brand.

Do macros and RGB lighting transfer to PS5?

Not necessarily. SteelSeries says its console profile can retain certain settings but not macros or lighting adjustments. Check the exact mouse manual and save supported settings to onboard memory.

Is there one best gaming mouse for PS5?

No universal winner is established. The right choice depends first on game support, exact model compatibility, connection method, hand orientation, shape, and the settings the mouse can retain without PC software.

Should I buy a mouse advertised as PlayStation compatible?

Use that label as a starting point, not proof. Confirm that the listing identifies your exact PS5 model and connection mode, then verify support for the specific games you play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

PS5 mouse buying is a compatibility check, not a universal ranking exercise: verify the exact mouse and connection mode, then verify every game you intend to play.
