Usually, no. A Fortnite update does not automatically reset every player’s preferences. If your sensitivity, keybinds, graphics, audio, HUD or accessibility options changed, first determine whether they changed once after the patch or return to default every time you launch the game. A one-time change may be an update-side adjustment; repeated resets usually indicate a local file-permission problem on Windows, a cloud-settings failure, the wrong account or platform profile, or (in Creative) a separate island-settings reset.
Use the checks below before playing competitively. They help you identify exactly what changed, test whether Fortnite can save new values, and choose the correct fix for PC, console, mobile or Creative mode.
What a Fortnite update can change—and what it cannot prove
Seeing default-looking options after a patch is not proof that Epic reset every player’s settings. Fortnite stores preferences through local and account-related systems, and a patch can expose a problem with either one. The useful question is whether the values remain after you save them and restart.
Epic’s End User License Agreement (EULA) also warns that character data, progress, customization and other service-related data “may cease to be available to you at any time without notice from Epic, including without limitation after a patch, update, or upgrade is applied by Epic.” That is a legal possibility statement, not evidence that a specific update erased your settings. Treat it as a reason to keep a record of important values, then diagnose the actual symptom.

One-time change versus a reset on every launch
| Pattern | Most useful interpretation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Several options look different once after an update, then stay after you save them | A one-time migration, changed default, account/profile mix-up or display-detection change | Audit the important categories and run a save-and-relaunch test |
| The same options return to defaults every time Fortnite opens | Settings are not being written locally or downloaded correctly | Use the Windows file-permission branch, or the cloud troubleshooting branch for other platforms |
| Only an island’s rules or devices changed in Creative | A Creative island-settings action, not a global player-settings reset | Inspect the island’s settings and whether Restore Defaults was used |
Check these settings before you queue
Confirm that you launched the expected Epic account and the expected profile on your console, PC or mobile device. A different account can look exactly like a reset because it has different preferences. Then work through the categories below and write down or screenshot values you cannot easily reconstruct.
Video and display
- Quality preset and 3D Resolution
- Frame-rate limit
- Display mode (fullscreen, windowed fullscreen or windowed)
- Output resolution and monitor selection
- Motion Blur
- Rendering mode, such as the mode you normally use for competitive play
Epic’s graphics guidance specifically points players to in-game video settings, 3D Resolution and rendering mode when diagnosing post-update graphics problems. A display-driver change or a newly detected monitor can also make a correct setting appear different, so compare the actual values rather than judging only from how the game looks.
Controls and aim
- Mouse or controller sensitivity, including horizontal, vertical and build/edit multipliers
- Aim-down-sights and scope sensitivity
- Controller dead zones and trigger settings
- Keybinds, build binds and edit binds
- Toggle versus hold choices for crouch, sprint, aim, edit and interact
- Any custom controller layout or mouse-button assignment
Audio and communication
- Master, music, sound-effects and cinematic volume
- Voice-chat input and output devices
- Voice-chat volume, voice method and push-to-talk behavior
- Mute settings for party, game and incoming players
HUD and accessibility
- HUD visibility and scale
- Reticle, damage indicators and visual sound effects
- Subtitles and text-related options
- Color-blind mode and strength
- Other accessibility toggles you rely on during play
Run a persistence test before changing everything
This short test separates a one-time post-update change from a settings-storage failure. Use an option you can recognize immediately, such as the frame-rate limit or a noncompetitive HUD scale.

- Open Fortnite’s Settings and change one easily identifiable value.
- Apply or confirm the change using the on-screen control; do not simply close a menu if the interface offers an Apply button.
- Exit Fortnite normally through its menu. Avoid testing during a forced shutdown or while the device is losing power.
- Launch Fortnite again on the same account and platform profile.
- Check the exact value. If it remains, the update may have caused a one-time change. If it returns to the previous or default value, continue with the platform-specific troubleshooting below.
Repeat with a second category only after the first value proves whether saving works. This prevents you from losing track of which change failed.
Windows PC: fix settings that reset every launch
Epic documents a Windows-specific fix for a common symptom: Fortnite’s settings revert whenever the game starts. The problem is often the read-only attribute on the local configuration file.
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%localappdata%in the address bar. - Open
FortniteGame, thenSaved, thenConfig, thenWindowsClient. - Right-click
GameUserSettings.iniand choose Properties. - On the General tab, clear Read-only.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch Fortnite, change one test setting, exit normally and relaunch to verify that the value persists.
Do not delete the file as a first step. Deleting it can remove your current local configuration and makes it harder to tell whether the original issue was simply a permission flag. If the Read-only box becomes selected again, check whether security software, a controlled-folder policy or a system cleanup utility is restoring it; make sure Fortnite is allowed to write to its own configuration folder.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

If the PC symptom includes crashes or poor performance
A settings reset may be part of a broader installation or driver problem. Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the game’s minimum requirements, updating the graphics driver, trying Performance Mode when it suits your hardware, and verifying game-file integrity in the Epic Games Launcher. Perform those checks after the file-permission test so you know which change addressed the problem.
Cloud Download Failure: when settings cannot load or save
Fortnite can display “Cloud Download Failure: Failed to Download Client Settings from the cloud.” This is a different path from a Windows GameUserSettings.ini permission issue. It can prevent settings from loading correctly or stop changes from carrying between sessions.
- Check Epic Games Server Status for an active Fortnite or account-service incident.
- Completely close Fortnite and restart the device.
- Clear the device or launcher cache using the cache-clearing procedure for your platform.
- Retry the game and run the one-setting persistence test.
- If the failure remains, test a reliable network connection and consider a public DNS service according to your platform’s network instructions.
- Work through Epic’s connection-troubleshooting steps, then restart the game and device again.
- If Fortnite still reports the cloud failure, contact Epic Support. Epic notes that a corrupted settings file may require support intervention.
The cloud-settings guidance applies to PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile. The GameUserSettings.ini procedure does not: that file path is a Windows PC instruction and should not be applied to a console or phone.

Console and mobile troubleshooting
On a console or mobile device, first record the exact values that changed. Restart Fortnite, restart the device, and check Epic’s server status before making broad changes. Re-run the persistence test with one harmless option. If the value still cannot be saved, the likely causes are a service-side cloud problem, an account/profile mismatch or a damaged local cache.
Xbox and PlayStation
Verify that the console profile is linked to the Epic account you normally use. A guest profile or a different linked account can present a clean set of preferences. After a full game and console restart, test again. Do not browse for or modify Windows folders on these platforms; if values continue to revert, preserve screenshots of the settings and the exact error message for Epic Support.

Nintendo Switch and mobile
Check that the game is fully updated, that the device has stable network access and that you are using the intended Epic login. A cache clear or reinstall should be considered only after recording your settings and confirming that the problem is not an active service incident. A reinstall does not fix an account-side cloud failure by itself.

Do not confuse Creative island settings with player settings
Fortnite has a separate Creative settings system. Player settings affect how you interact with Fortnite generally; island settings control the rules, devices and behavior of a particular Creative island. In Creative, Restore Defaults resets the selected island-settings category or tab. That action does not demonstrate that a global update reset your sensitivity, keybinds or HUD.
If only one island behaves differently, open that island’s settings and inspect the relevant category. If every mode shows the same changed controls or graphics values, return to the account, persistence and platform checks instead.
Use the symptom to choose the right branch
| Platform | Scope of change | Timing | Likely storage path | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Most or all settings | Reverts every launch | Local configuration file | Clear Read-only on GameUserSettings.ini, then test |
| Any platform | Most or all settings | Cannot load or save; cloud error appears | Cloud/account settings | Server status, cache, network/DNS, restart and support |
| Console or mobile | One or more categories | Changed once after patch | Account profile or update migration | Confirm account, record values and test persistence |
| Creative only | One island or settings tab | After an island edit or Restore Defaults action | Island settings | Inspect that island’s settings, not global player options |
How to protect competitive settings in the future
- Keep a written list or screenshots of sensitivity, dead zones, keybinds, rendering mode, frame-rate limit and visual-accessibility choices.
- After a major update, launch a private or low-stakes session and verify input, aim, frame rate, audio and HUD before entering a tournament or ranked match.
- Change one setting at a time when troubleshooting and note whether it survives a normal restart.
- Save screenshots that include the settings page and any error message; they give support a precise before-and-after record.
- Keep your Epic account and platform profile consistent across devices.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact support after you have confirmed the correct account, run a normal restart, checked server status, tested persistence and completed the platform-appropriate fix. Include your platform, operating-system version where relevant, Fortnite version if shown, the categories that changed, whether they revert every launch, the exact Cloud Download Failure text, and what happened after clearing cache or changing the Windows file attribute. Do not send passwords or authentication codes.
