Yes, a 185Hz screen can make supported games and some animations look smoother, while a higher-resolution screen can show finer detail. But those two numbers alone do not guarantee a noticeable upgrade—or tell you how much battery it will use. The key caveat: the cited 185Hz phone example does not establish that the display is 2K.
What do 2K and 185Hz mean on a phone?
Resolution: how much detail the screen can show
Resolution is the number of pixels in the display image. More pixels can render finer detail, but perceived sharpness also depends on screen size and how far away you hold the phone. Pixel density combines resolution and display size, so compare the exact pixel dimensions or pixels per inch rather than relying on “2K.” Phone makers do not use that label consistently.
Refresh rate: how often the image can update
A 185Hz refresh rate means the screen can update up to 185 times per second in supported conditions. That can make motion look smoother, especially when scrolling or playing a game that can produce high frame rates. It does not mean every app or game runs at 185 frames per second, nor that the display stays at its maximum all the time.
Does a 2K 185Hz display look better?
It may, but the result depends on what you do with the phone and what you can perceive. Higher resolution is most useful when fine detail is visible at your normal viewing distance. Higher refresh is most apparent in fast motion, smooth scrolling, and games that support high frame rates. Screen size, content, app support, and individual sensitivity all affect the difference.

The official ASUS ROG Phone 9 product page lists a 6.78-inch E6 AMOLED display with refresh rates up to 185Hz through Game Genie. That page does not establish a 2K resolution, so it is an example of a phone advertising up to 185Hz—not proof of a verified 2K/185Hz combination.
For a sense of how specifications can differ, Nothing lists the Phone (2) with a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display at 2412 × 1080 pixels and an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh range. Its Phone (3a) Pro is listed as a 6.77-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with adaptive refresh up to 120Hz. These manufacturer specifications are useful comparison points, not a controlled test of perceived sharpness.

Will a 2K 185Hz display drain the battery faster?
A higher refresh rate can use more power, but the battery effect cannot be calculated from resolution and refresh rate alone. Panel and chipset behavior, brightness, software, adaptive refresh, and workload also matter. A phone that lowers refresh when displaying static content may use less power than one that holds a high rate, but the cited product pages do not provide controlled tests isolating refresh rate or resolution.

That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent measurement. ASUS describes the ROG Phone 9 display as adaptive, but its page does not quantify the battery cost of using 185Hz.

The manufacturers publish usage-duration figures for these phones, but those figures are not directly comparable battery tests of display settings. ASUS reports at least 4.5 hours of heavy gaming, 22.1 hours of video streaming, and 23.4 hours of Instagram scrolling for the ROG Phone 9. Nothing reports 26 hours of YouTube, 11 hours of BGMI gaming, 24 hours of Instagram scrolling, and 45 hours of voice calls for the Phone (3a) Pro. These are manufacturer-reported usage claims, not evidence of how much battery a 2K/185Hz display would consume.

- Verify the resolution. Look for exact pixel dimensions or pixel density, not just “2K” or “FHD+.”
- Check the refresh modes. Find out the supported range, whether refresh is adaptive, and whether the mode you want applies to your apps or games.
- Consider size and brightness. Resolution and refresh do not describe the full viewing experience; display size and brightness matter too.
- Match the screen to your use. Confirm that your games support high frame rates if gaming smoothness is the reason for choosing a high-refresh phone.
- Look for comparable battery tests. Capacity alone does not establish endurance. Prefer tests that use similar brightness, workloads, and display settings.
A spec sheet can confirm what a phone supports; it cannot establish that you will see a meaningful improvement or predict the battery penalty for your own use. The cited sources are manufacturer pages, not independent perception tests or controlled battery comparisons.
