No. A 2.8-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts (MoE) model does not require 2.8 trillion parameters of VRAM. Parameter count describes how many learned weights exist; memory use depends on the number of bytes used for each weight, how the checkpoint is sharded, and the extra memory needed for execution. In raw-weight terms, the complete model is about 5.6 TB in BF16, 2.8 TB in 8-bit, or 1.4 TB in ideal 4-bit storage before runtime overhead.

What the 2.8-trillion figure actually measures

“2.8 trillion parameters” is a count of scalar values in the model, not a statement that a single graphics card must expose 2.8 trillion bytes—or any other fixed number of bytes. To estimate storage, multiply the parameter count by the bytes used for each parameter:

raw weight memory = parameter count × bytes per parameter

The result is a lower bound for the weights alone. A running model also needs quantization metadata, embeddings, temporary workspaces, framework allocations, and a key-value (KV) cache for the text currently being processed.

Weight format Bytes per parameter Raw storage for 2.8T weights Approximate binary size
BF16 or FP16 2 5.6 TB (decimal) About 5.09 TiB
FP8 or INT8 1 2.8 TB (decimal) About 2.55 TiB
Ideal INT4 0.5 1.4 TB (decimal) About 1.27 TiB

“Ideal” 4-bit means exactly half a byte per parameter. Real implementations add scales, zero points, packing metadata, and alignment, so their usable footprint is higher than the arithmetic minimum. These figures also describe storage capacity, not speed or quality.

Why active parameters do not remove the full checkpoint

An MoE replaces one large, always-used feed-forward block with a collection of experts and a router. For each token, the router selects only a subset of those experts. The selected, or active, parameters determine much of that token’s computation and weight traffic.

The inactive experts still belong to the model. Their weights must remain stored somewhere so that a later token can be routed to them. Unless a system deliberately streams experts from another tier of storage, the complete expert pool is present across the deployment’s memory. Active-parameter counts therefore help estimate per-token compute, not the total size of the checkpoint.

Dynamic loading can move selected experts into a GPU when needed, but that is a placement strategy rather than deletion. It introduces transfer latency and bandwidth requirements, and a workload that routes broadly may touch many experts over time.

How a 2.8T MoE is divided across GPUs

Models of this scale are normally partitioned across many accelerators. NVIDIA’s trillion-parameter deployment guidance describes chopping a model into chunks and parallelizing those chunks when one GPU cannot hold it. Megatron Core documents several independent parallelism dimensions:

Tensor parallelism (TP)

TP splits the matrix operations in an individual layer across GPUs. Each accelerator stores a slice of the layer’s weights and exchanges intermediate results with its peers.

Pipeline parallelism (PP)

PP assigns different groups of layers to different pipeline stages. A request moves through those stages, allowing model depth to exceed the capacity of any one GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Context parallelism (CP)

CP divides long sequences among GPUs. It reduces activation pressure for large context windows, although it adds communication and scheduling complexity.

Expert parallelism (EP)

EP places different MoE experts on different GPUs. The router sends token activations to the devices hosting the selected experts, then the results are combined. This is the most direct way to distribute the expert pool, but routing creates all-to-all communication that benefits from a fast interconnect.

Data parallelism (DP)

DP replicates or shards work across groups of GPUs so the service can process more requests. It improves aggregate throughput; it does not by itself make one copy of the model smaller unless a sharded data-parallel scheme is used.

Megatron Core expresses the overall arrangement as:

Total GPUs = TP × PP × CP × EP × DP

Those factors describe a topology, not a universal answer. The required count depends on each GPU’s usable VRAM, the interconnect, the precision, the context length, the batch size, and the target latency or throughput.

Calculating a minimum GPU count

Start with the raw-weight estimate for the chosen format, then divide by the memory that can actually be allocated to model weights:

minimum GPU count ≈ weight capacity ÷ usable VRAM per GPU

This is only a capacity floor. Usable VRAM is less than the advertised card capacity because the runtime, communication buffers, kernels, and KV cache need room. For example, the 1.4 TB ideal-INT4 figure is not a promise that a fleet with exactly 1.4 TB of aggregate advertised VRAM will load successfully.

NVIDIA’s published example for a smaller 1.8-trillion-parameter MoE says FP4 needs half a byte per parameter and requires a minimum of five GPUs just to store the parameters. The same passage notes that practical user experience requires more than that minimum. The example illustrates the difference between fitting weights and running a useful service; it is not a GPU count for the 2.8T model.

How much VRAM does a 2.8T model need at 4-bit?

At the arithmetic ideal of 4 bits per parameter, 2.8 trillion weights occupy about 1.4 TB decimal, or roughly 1.27 TiB. That is the answer for raw weights, not the complete inference footprint.

A deployment must add:

  • Quantization scales, zero points, packing metadata, and alignment overhead.
  • Embeddings and any unquantized layers retained for numerical stability.
  • Kernel workspaces, communication buffers, and framework allocations.
  • KV-cache memory, which grows with context length, concurrent sequences, and batch size.

Consequently, capacity planning should leave headroom above 1.4 TB. The exact margin depends on the quantizer, inference engine, architecture, and workload; a single universal “4-bit VRAM requirement” cannot be derived from the parameter count alone.

What compression can and cannot change

Quantization reduces the bytes used by each weight, trading some combination of quality, kernel compatibility, and speed for lower memory use. Standard 8-bit and 4-bit representations are convenient planning points, but specialized formats can compress further.

The 2024 QMoE paper reports compressing a 1.6T SwitchTransformer-c2048 checkpoint from 3.2 TB in bfloat16 to less than 160 GB—approximately 0.8 bits per parameter—using a custom compressed format and custom kernels. The authors ran that system on eight RTX 3090 GPUs or four RTX A6000 GPUs. This demonstrates that an unusual compression-and-runtime stack can change the storage regime; it does not establish that an arbitrary 2.8T model will reach the same ratio, quality, or hardware compatibility.

Can CPU RAM or an SSD replace VRAM?

Partly. Offloading keeps some weights, expert layers, or cache data in system RAM and moves them to the GPU as needed. SSD-backed offload can extend the storage tier further. This can make a model technically loadable when aggregate VRAM is insufficient, but it does not make the model free to run.

  • Bandwidth: PCIe, memory-channel, and SSD throughput are far below the bandwidth of on-package GPU memory, so streamed experts can reduce token throughput.
  • Latency: If routing requests an expert that is not resident, transfer time appears in the critical path.
  • Working-set behavior: Repeatedly swapping experts is especially costly when a workload touches many experts instead of a small, stable subset.
  • Capacity: RAM or SSD must still hold the complete checkpoint, including all experts and metadata.

Offload is therefore a trade-off between VRAM capacity and performance. It can be appropriate for low-throughput experimentation, but a latency-sensitive service generally keeps as much of the active working set as possible in VRAM.

Why context length and batch size matter

Weight memory is mostly fixed after a model is loaded. Activation and KV-cache memory are workload-dependent. Longer prompts, longer generated responses, larger batches, and more simultaneous users all increase KV-cache usage. Context parallelism can distribute long sequences, but it does not eliminate the underlying data or its communication cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A configuration that fits one short request may fail when the same model serves many concurrent conversations. Capacity tests should therefore use the intended maximum context and concurrency rather than a single-file load test.

Inference is not training

The tables above describe inference weights. Training requires additional memory for gradients, optimizer states, activation storage, and often checkpoint or communication buffers. Those states can be several times larger than the weights, depending on the optimizer, precision, and parallelism strategy. A 2.8T model that is barely practical for sharded inference can be far beyond the memory budget of a conventional training setup.

A practical planning procedure

  1. Define the workload. Record maximum context length, concurrent sequences, batch size, target tokens per second, and acceptable first-token latency.
  2. Choose a representation. Compare BF16/FP16, FP8/INT8, and 4-bit options, including the quality and kernel support of the exact quantizer.
  3. Compute raw weight capacity. Multiply 2.8 trillion by the selected bytes per parameter and convert the result to decimal TB and binary TiB.
  4. Add runtime headroom. Reserve space for metadata, embeddings, workspaces, communication buffers, and the KV cache under the target workload.
  5. Select a parallelism topology. Choose TP, PP, CP, and EP to place layers and experts; add DP only when additional request capacity is needed.
  6. Check the interconnect. Expert routing and tensor parallelism can become communication-bound even when the aggregate VRAM is sufficient.
  7. Decide on offload. If weights cannot remain resident, benchmark CPU-RAM or SSD streaming with the intended routing pattern and measure latency, throughput, and swap frequency.
  8. Validate at production settings. Load the complete checkpoint and test maximum context, batch, and concurrency. A successful load at a smaller setting is not proof that the service will remain within memory at its limits.

Common mistakes and their corrections

  • Mistake: treating “2.8T” as bytes. Correct interpretation: it is a count; precision converts that count into storage.
  • Mistake: multiplying only the active-parameter count. Correct interpretation: active parameters estimate per-token computation, while the complete expert pool still needs storage somewhere.
  • Mistake: equating aggregate VRAM with usable capacity. Correct interpretation: subtract runtime overhead and reserve KV-cache space.
  • Mistake: assuming 4-bit always means exactly 0.5 bytes per parameter. Correct interpretation: metadata and implementation details increase the footprint.
  • Mistake: assuming offload has no performance cost. Correct interpretation: transfers consume bandwidth and can add latency whenever an expert is not resident.
  • Mistake: planning from a one-user benchmark. Correct interpretation: context length, batch size, and concurrency change activation and KV memory.

Bottom line for deployment decisions

A 2.8T MoE does not need 2.8 trillion parameters of VRAM. It needs enough total memory to hold its full checkpoint at the selected precision, plus execution overhead. The raw-weight planning points are about 5.6 TB at BF16, 2.8 TB at 8-bit, and 1.4 TB at ideal 4-bit. Multi-GPU sharding—especially expert parallelism—is the normal architecture. Active routing lowers compute per token, not the total checkpoint requirement; quantization and offload lower VRAM pressure only with corresponding quality, bandwidth, latency, or engineering trade-offs.
