No. A 10,000mAh phone battery does not automatically last twice as long as a 5,000mAh battery. The mAh figure measures electric charge, not runtime; runtime also depends on battery voltage and how much power the phone uses. If voltage and power use are alike, twice the capacity could yield roughly twice the runtime—but phones and real-world use rarely match perfectly.
What mAh tells you—and what it does not
mAh means milliamp-hours, a measure of electric charge capacity. It does not say how many hours a phone will run. To compare stored energy, voltage matters too: watt-hours (Wh) account for both charge and voltage. Qualcomm describes battery life as battery capacity in watt-hours divided by power consumption in watts. Qualcomm’s explanation of smartphone battery life also notes that voltage must be considered when comparing mAh figures.
A larger battery is like a larger fuel tank: it can hold more, but how long it lasts depends on how quickly the device uses what it holds. A phone’s power use changes with its display, modem, processor, graphics hardware, sensors, and other components, as well as the task being performed.

When could twice the mAh mean close to twice the runtime?
If the 10,000mAh and 5,000mAh figures refer to internal batteries at the same nominal voltage, the larger battery suggests roughly twice the charge capacity and, at equal voltage, roughly twice the energy. Runtime could approach a 2:1 ratio if the phones also use power at similar average rates under comparable conditions.

Those conditions matter. A brighter screen, demanding game, weak cellular signal, or active wireless connection can change power use. If the battery voltages are unknown, mAh alone does not establish an exact energy ratio. For a more meaningful comparison, look for Wh and compare runtime for the same activity under similar test conditions.
Why battery-life claims differ
The activity being tested
Video playback, streaming, web browsing, calls, audio, gaming, and standby place different demands on a phone. Samsung’s battery-testing guidance uses separate categories such as talk, audio, video, and internet use rather than treating battery life as one universal activity. Samsung’s test-method guidance says results can vary with device settings, network conditions, and use.

The test setup and wording
Brightness, network connection, signal quality, software, and audio settings can affect a result. “Up to” playback figures are estimates for particular activities, not promises of everyday runtime. Apple, for example, lists different estimates for local and streamed video on the same phone.

The battery’s age and condition
A battery’s available capacity can decline as it chemically ages, which may shorten the time between charges. Apple distinguishes battery life—the time a device runs before it needs recharging—from battery lifespan, or how long the battery lasts before it needs replacement. Its lithium-ion battery guidance explains that aging can reduce the charge a battery holds.

How to compare two phones’ battery life
- Compare energy first. Use Wh when available. If specifications give only mAh, look for the battery voltage before treating the capacities as directly comparable.
- Compare the same activity. Match local video with local video, browsing with browsing, or another specific use. Do not treat a playback result as a general runtime score.
- Check the test conditions. Look for details such as brightness, network, and whether the test used streaming or locally stored content. Different setups can produce different results.
- Read the metric carefully. An “up to” estimate and a standardized endurance figure are not interchangeable. The European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL), for example, reports rated battery capacity separately from endurance per cycle.
- Account for battery condition. Compare similarly aged batteries, or consider the phones’ battery health if one has been used longer.
EPREL illustrates why capacity and endurance should be read as separate measures: an Apple A3094 registry entry, accessed in 2026, lists 4,383mAh and 45 hours of endurance per cycle; a Samsung SM-F976B registry entry, also accessed in 2026, lists 4,854mAh and 51 hours 10 minutes per cycle. These are model-specific registry values, not results from a controlled, same-condition comparison between the phones.

The label indicates a high charge capacity, but it cannot tell you by itself how many hours the phone will last or whether it will outlast another model. Check the phone’s stated runtime for the activities you care about, and treat “up to” claims as scenario-specific estimates. If your practical goal is simply more time away from an outlet, a portable power bank can provide an option to recharge; its capacity label alone does not establish how much usable charge it will deliver to a particular phone.
