No—not always. Whether your old 4G SIM will work with 5G depends on your carrier and the SIM itself. You also need a 5G-compatible phone, a suitable plan and account setup, and 5G coverage where you are. Ask your carrier to check your SIM and account before replacing a card or buying a phone.
Will your old 4G SIM work with 5G?
There is no universal rule that every 5G connection requires a new SIM. Some carriers support compatible 4G SIMs, while others may require a newer SIM for a specific phone, account, or activation. The label “5G SIM” alone does not settle whether your current card will work.
Carrier guidance illustrates the difference. In the United States, Verizon says compatible 4G and 5G physical SIMs, as well as eSIMs, currently work on its 5G network. Its guidance also says a SIM may not support every feature of a different device, so compatibility should be checked for your setup: Verizon SIM card FAQ. By contrast, T-Mobile tells existing customers upgrading devices to activate the new SIM supplied with the 5G device; customers who no longer have it should contact T-Mobile or visit a store for a replacement. That is activation guidance for T-Mobile customers, not proof that all older LTE-era SIMs fail: T-Mobile SIM card support.

What else is needed to connect to 5G?
- A 5G-capable phone: A SIM cannot add 5G radio hardware to a 4G-only device. The phone must also support the bands and certification relevant to your carrier.
- 5G coverage: Your carrier must offer 5G where you are. Coverage can vary by location.
- An eligible plan and account setup: Some carriers require a 5G plan or account provisioning for access.
- A compatible SIM or eSIM: The carrier must support it for your device and account, and it may need activation after a device change.
For example, Rogers lists 5G/5G+ coverage, a 5G mobile plan, a compatible device, and a SIM among the requirements for its Canadian service. It says the device uses the fastest network it supports locally: Rogers 5G and 5G+ support. Requirements like these are carrier- and market-specific, not a universal SIM rule.
Why does my 5G phone show LTE?
A 5G phone may show LTE when 5G is unavailable in its current location, when its settings or carrier setup do not allow 5G, or when the device cannot use the available 5G network. A 5G icon indicates a connection to the carrier’s 5G network; it is not guaranteed everywhere. Verizon says its 5G devices shift automatically to LTE where 5G is unavailable. Local rules can differ too. Brunei’s Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications says local 4G SIMs connect to its 5G network, while 3G SIMs do not; whether a 5G SIM is needed depends on the current SIM: Brunei MTIC 5G FAQ. This is a local example, not a rule that applies to other countries or carriers.

- Check the exact phone model. Confirm with your carrier that it supports 5G on that network, including the relevant bands and any device certification requirements.
- Check coverage and settings. Verify that 5G is available at your location and that the phone’s network settings allow 5G.
- Verify your plan and account. Ask whether your plan qualifies and whether 5G access needs to be enabled or provisioned on your account.
- Ask the carrier to check your SIM or eSIM. Give the carrier your phone model and account details. Replace or activate a SIM only if the carrier says it is required for your setup.
- Follow the carrier’s activation steps and restart if advised. If 5G still does not appear, ask the carrier to troubleshoot the device and account. LTE may remain the available connection outside 5G coverage.
Should you buy a SIM or a new phone?
Do not buy a generic SIM kit to solve a carrier compatibility or account-provisioning issue. A replacement SIM is carrier- and account-dependent, and the carrier can confirm whether you need one and how to activate it. A phone upgrade is relevant only if your current phone does not support 5G on your carrier’s network; changing the SIM will not make a 4G-only phone connect to 5G.
