For casual games, a foam dodgeball set is a practical place to start—but check the ball size and count before buying. School and organized play may require a specific format or an approved ball, so the right set depends on who is playing and which rules apply.
Why the right dodgeball set depends on the game
Dodgeball has more than one ball format. The World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) publishes separate foam and cloth rules, as well as youth and grassroots adaptations. Its live rules page lists foam and cloth rules with May 2026 revision dates.
That distinction matters when choosing equipment: balls differ by format, and competition rules can specify the type, dimensions, and number required. A recreational set is not automatically suitable for school or sanctioned play.

- Format: Choose foam, cloth, or another recreational type based on the game you intend to play. Foam is a sensible starting point for casual play; cloth sets suit games following cloth rules. The formats are not interchangeable for rule-bound play.
- Size and material: Check the actual specifications rather than relying on a broad product label. Age-group rules may prescribe both.
- Ball count: Make sure the set includes enough balls for your ruleset. In the WDBF’s 2022 rules document, foam play uses six balls and cloth play uses five.
- Players and rules: Identify the age group and whether the game is recreational, a school competition, or sanctioned competition before selecting a set.
- Approval: If an organizer requires an approved ball, confirm that the exact product is approved. A generic claim such as “official” in a retail listing is not enough by itself.
How many balls and what size do the rules call for?
The figures below come from specific rule documents, not a universal standard. WDBF’s cited document is its 2022 rules version; check its live rules page and the event organizer’s requirements before treating those specifications as current for a competition.

Casual play
Search for a foam dodgeball set, then verify how many balls are included, their size, and the intended age range. Retail descriptions vary, and the available rule sources do not establish a universally best set or verify any particular product listing.

School games
Ask the teacher, school, or competition organizer which rules apply. Requirements can differ by age group: British Dodgeball’s 2024/25 school regulations, for example, specify three size 1 foam balls for U11 and five size 2 cloth balls for U13/U15. Do not use those figures as a substitute for the rules of another school competition.

Confirm the current ruleset, ball format, dimensions, quantity, and any approval requirement with the governing body or event organizer before ordering. The WDBF’s 2022 rules document says official competitions must use WDBF-approved balls, while the federation’s live rules page lists later revisions. Check the live requirements rather than relying on an older document or a seller’s wording.
