Doctrine is a Support hero introduced with Overwatch Season 5, which began on October 6, 2026. His kit is built around manipulating lifeforce: the Eternal Scepter can heal allies or damage enemies, Infuse upgrades the next ability, Vital Drone strengthens a teammate, Crimson Veil provides directional defense and movement, and Deliverance changes the health rules for everyone caught in its drone swarm.
The important choice is not simply whether to heal or attack. Doctrine players must decide which resource matters most in the next few seconds: allied sustain, enemy pressure, a teammate’s output, personal escape, or a fight-wide health swing. The sections below explain every documented ability, the Infused versions, the listed passive and perks, and a practical way to combine them.
What Doctrine does in Overwatch
Doctrine occupies the Support role but does not play like a purely defensive healer. His primary weapon works in two directions: it restores allied health and harms opponents. That gives him a reason to keep a clear mid-to-long-range line of sight even when his team is not currently in danger. He can contribute pressure between healing moments instead of waiting for a separate damage window.

Eternal Scepter: one weapon for healing and damage
The Eternal Scepter is Doctrine’s primary weapon. Its projectiles heal allies and damage enemies, and its effective description is mid-to-long range. That dual purpose is the foundation of his neutral game: Doctrine can maintain a teammate from distance, then direct the same weapon at an opponent when an opening appears.
Healing use
When an ally needs sustain, aim the Scepter at that teammate and keep the line of fire open. Because the weapon is not limited to a short-range aura, Doctrine can support an ally while holding a position away from the main collision point. This is especially useful when the team is split between a forward player and a safer backline, although no numeric range, healing amount, projectile speed, or ammunition rule is established.

Damage use
When allies are stable, the Scepter becomes a source of ranged pressure. Damaging an enemy is not a separate stance or a different ability; it is the other documented outcome of the same weapon. The strategic question is whether a marginal amount of damage is more valuable than topping up an ally who may soon re-enter danger.
Infused Scepter
Infusing the Eternal Scepter makes its projectiles larger and able to pierce targets. Larger projectiles can make precision easier, while piercing changes the value of aligned targets. The documented effect does not provide a damage multiplier, healing multiplier, duration, or number of targets, so those values should be taken from the current in-game ability details rather than assumed from the name.
Use the Infused form when the fight presents a clear line through multiple relevant targets or when landing the normal projectile consistently is the immediate problem. Do not spend Infuse merely because the Scepter is available; its other empowered forms can solve mobility or ally-amplification problems that a larger projectile cannot.

Infuse: Doctrine’s central timing mechanic
Infuse strengthens Doctrine’s next ability. Blizzard presents it as a way to make an ability more potent when the moment calls for it. It is therefore a setup resource, not a standalone damage button. Activating Infuse without a specific follow-up wastes the kit’s most flexible decision point.

- Choose Eternal Scepter when the fight offers a valuable projectile line and you need the larger, piercing projectiles to affect more than one target.
- Choose Vital Drone when one ally is about to deal damage or absorb pressure and Doctrine also needs the drone’s attack-speed and life benefit.
- Choose Crimson Veil when survival or repositioning is the problem and free flight creates a route that a ground dash cannot.
These are strategic interpretations of the documented effects, not published performance guarantees. The correct choice changes with team spacing, enemy positions, and whether Doctrine is currently solving a sustain problem or a pressure problem.
Vital Drone: amplify one ally, or both heroes with Infuse
Vital Drone sends a drone to an ally. The drone grants attack speed and life benefits, making it a single-target amplification tool rather than a general team heal. The strongest target is usually the teammate who is already converting opportunities into damage or who must survive concentrated pressure for the next exchange.
Normal Vital Drone
Use the normal version when an ally’s immediate contribution matters more than Doctrine’s own enhancement. An active damage dealer can make better use of attack speed, while the additional life helps a teammate remain in the engagement long enough to finish a play. The ability is also a way to reinforce a frontline player without requiring Doctrine to stand beside that player.
Infused Vital Drone
When Vital Drone is Infused, its benefit also applies to Doctrine. That changes the decision from “which ally gets stronger?” to “can both of us exploit the same window?” It is particularly attractive when Doctrine must expose himself to maintain pressure or when the team’s plan depends on two heroes remaining active at once.
Because the documented description does not state the drone’s duration, exact attack-speed increase, life value, targeting restrictions, or cooldown, those details should not be inferred. Read the current ability tooltip for the live numbers and use the strategic effect—single-target reinforcement with a personal component when Infused—as the stable principle.

Crimson Veil: four-way damage reduction and Infused flight
Crimson Veil lets Doctrine dash forward, backward, left, or right while reducing incoming damage. The four-direction choice matters: the ability is not limited to a forward engage. A backward dash can break contact, while a lateral dash can move Doctrine out of a predictable line without surrendering as much ground.
Defensive dash
The damage reduction makes Crimson Veil a survival tool as much as a movement tool. Use it when incoming fire is the immediate threat, selecting the direction that leads toward cover, a teammate, or a better line for the Scepter. Since no reduction percentage or duration is provided, the ability should be understood qualitatively rather than as permission to stand in danger indefinitely.
Infused Crimson Veil
Infusing Crimson Veil grants free flight. This expands the routes available to Doctrine beyond a ground-level dash. Flight can open an escape path over an obstacle, create a new angle for supporting an ally, or let Doctrine reach a safer elevation before resuming Scepter fire.

It solves personal mobility and positioning; Vital Drone solves allied output and shared survivability. Pick the form that addresses the failure condition most likely to decide the current exchange.
Deliverance: Doctrine’s ultimate
Deliverance launches a swarm of drones. Allies caught in its effect gain additional life in the form of Overhealth, while enemies have their maximum health reduced. Blizzard summarizes the design as: “Allies gain Overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited.”
What the two effects mean
- Ally Overhealth gives Doctrine’s team extra room to remain in a fight. It can support an advance, help a group hold a contested area, or buy time while another ability is being prepared.
- Reduced enemy maximum health changes the opponent’s health ceiling rather than simply describing a burst of damage. That makes Deliverance a resource-denial ultimate: enemies have less maximum health available while its effect applies.
No published description establishes the swarm’s radius, duration, exact Overhealth amount, reduction value, line-of-sight rule, or whether the maximum-health change can be cleansed. Those are balance and implementation details that may vary by patch. The reliable strategic identity is the simultaneous contrast: your team receives extra health while the opposing team’s maximum is constrained.

When to use Deliverance
Use Deliverance when both sides are committed to the same fight and the health swing can influence several players at once. A single-target emergency is usually a better reason to consider Vital Drone or the Scepter, whereas Deliverance is designed to affect a broader contest. Its value rises when allies can capitalize on their additional life immediately and enemies cannot simply avoid the swarm’s area.
Do not describe the ultimate as a conventional damage nuke. The documented enemy effect is a reduction to maximum health, and the allied effect is Overhealth. Treating it as a direct damage spell can lead to poor timing and an inaccurate expectation of what the button does.
Passive and perk choices
The official hero page lists a movement-triggered self-heal passive. The available description does not specify the movement threshold, healing amount, cooldown, or whether every movement source qualifies. Its practical implication is that repositioning can contribute to Doctrine’s own sustain, so standing still after taking damage is not always the best recovery plan.
Minor perks
- Saving Grace: provides an immediate heal for a Vital Drone target.
- Blood Drain: lets Doctrine self-heal from Eternal Scepter damage.
Saving Grace favors a player who uses Vital Drone to stabilize an ally at a critical moment. Blood Drain favors a more aggressive Scepter pattern in which damaging enemies also supports Doctrine’s own health. Neither description supplies a numerical heal value, so compare them by the problem they solve rather than by an assumed percentage.
Major perks
- Transfusion: dealing damage or healing reduces Infuse’s cooldown.
- Life’s Toll: lowers Doctrine’s maximum life in exchange for stronger Eternal Scepter healing.
Transfusion rewards consistent Scepter activity in either direction: accurate damage and useful healing both contribute to returning Infuse sooner. Life’s Toll is a deliberate durability trade. It can increase the strength of Doctrine’s healing output, but the lower maximum life makes positioning and Crimson Veil discipline more important.

1. Start with sustain versus pressure
Keep the Scepter on the ally who needs to remain functional when survival is the limiting factor. Shift to enemy damage when allied health is stable and pressure can force the opponent to retreat or spend resources. This is a continuous choice, not a permanent mode.

2. Decide whether the next problem is shared output or personal movement
Vital Drone is the single-target amplification answer: it gives an ally attack speed and life, and its Infused version gives Doctrine the same benefit. Crimson Veil is the mobility answer: it reduces incoming damage during a directional dash, with Infuse adding flight. If a teammate is ready to convert a window into damage, favor the drone; if Doctrine cannot survive or reach a useful angle, favor the Veil.
3. Reserve Infuse for a visible payoff
Before activating Infuse, identify the ability that will be pressed next. A clear projectile line points to Eternal Scepter, a two-hero pressure window to Vital Drone, and a dangerous or vertical route to Crimson Veil. If none of those conditions exists, waiting preserves the option to respond to the next development.
4. Treat Deliverance as a fight-wide health decision
Look for a moment when allies can remain close enough to benefit from Overhealth and enemies are committed enough for reduced maximum health to matter. The ultimate is strongest when it changes the terms of a shared engagement, not when it is spent on an isolated target who can disengage.
Example decision sequences
Supporting an aggressive teammate
- Use the Eternal Scepter to keep the forward teammate healthy from range.
- When that teammate is ready to commit, send Vital Drone to provide attack speed and life.
- Infuse Vital Drone if Doctrine also needs to enter the same pressure window.
- Continue switching the Scepter between ally healing and enemy damage according to which side is losing health.
Escaping a collapsing position
- Use the Scepter to maintain the ally who can cover the retreat.
- Activate Crimson Veil in the direction of cover, a teammate, or a safer firing lane.
- Infuse Crimson Veil when ground movement is insufficient and free flight opens a viable route.
- Once repositioned, reassess whether Infuse should be saved for the next Scepter or Vital Drone opportunity.
Turning a contested fight
- Keep allies within the area where a drone swarm can affect several of them.
- Use Deliverance when both teams are committed, granting allies Overhealth while limiting enemy maximum health.
- Follow the ultimate with Scepter healing for allies who are still taking damage, or Scepter pressure against enemies whose reduced health ceiling makes continued focus valuable.
What is and is not known about Doctrine’s numbers
Blizzard’s published descriptions establish the qualitative effects above but do not provide independent numeric balance statistics in the supplied material. Exact healing, damage, cooldown, range, duration, Overhealth, maximum-health reduction, and perk values should therefore be read from the current in-game hero information and patch notes. The strategic framework remains useful across balance changes because it is based on the relationships among sustain, pressure, amplification, mobility, and health denial rather than on a particular percentage.
Bottom line
Doctrine is a flexible Support whose strength comes from choosing the right lifeforce trade at the right time. The Eternal Scepter alternates between healing and damage; Infuse upgrades the next ability; Vital Drone reinforces an ally and can include Doctrine; Crimson Veil protects and repositions him, with Infused flight; and Deliverance gives allies Overhealth while restricting enemy maximum health. Play him by identifying the fight’s most urgent resource problem, then spend Infuse or the ultimate only when their documented upgrade changes that problem.
