Season 5, “A Grim Doctrine,” was announced to begin on October 6, 2026, with Doctrine as its new Support hero. That date is release context, not a promise that the same balance or ability behavior will remain after later updates. Blizzard’s hero profile is the appropriate reference when a patch changes a description.
Doctrine’s abilities and the decisions they create
Eternal Scepter: one weapon, two jobs
Eternal Scepter is Doctrine’s primary weapon. Blizzard’s hero profile describes it as a mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies; the Season 5 announcement describes the reach as mid-to-long range. The difference in wording does not change the key choice: your aim can either preserve a teammate or apply pressure to an opponent.
That dual purpose makes target selection more important than simply maximizing shots. When a teammate is in danger, a damaging opportunity may be less valuable than stabilizing them. When the team is healthy, the same weapon can help finish an enemy or force them away. Doctrine therefore rewards players who watch both health bars and enemy positioning rather than locking onto one role for an entire fight.
The infused shot is a larger piercing blast. Because the empowered shot is a distinct effect rather than a passive upgrade to every attack, you must decide when a line through several targets, a high-value heal, or a decisive burst of pressure is worth consuming your next ability enhancement.
Infuse: plan the next action before pressing it
Infuse adds a powerful effect to Doctrine’s next ability. It is not described as a permanent stat increase or a general-purpose resource; its value comes from choosing the ability that benefits most from the empowerment at that moment.
Infuse turns Doctrine’s rotation into a short planning exercise. Before activating it, identify whether the team needs an offensive opening, emergency sustain, safer movement, or a stronger ultimate swing. Pressing it without a clear follow-up can leave you with an ordinary ability when the fight reaches its decisive moment.
Invigorating Drones: ally sustain with an output boost
Invigorating Drones sends drones to an ally, granting attack speed and healing. This combines survival with increased offensive output, so the recipient matters: the best target is not automatically the teammate with the lowest health. A healthy ally who is about to deliver meaningful damage may create more value from the attack-speed increase, while a wounded teammate may require the healing immediately.

When Invigorating Drones is infused, drones also deploy on Doctrine. The documented effect gives you additional personal support while the ally receives the base benefits. This creates a different risk profile from using the ability uninfused: you can accompany an aggressive moment with more self-sustain, but Infuse is then unavailable for another ability until you have used it.
Shrouded Momentum: horizontal movement with protection
Shrouded Momentum is a horizontal rush that includes damage reduction. It can function as an escape from danger, a way to cross a gap, or a protected repositioning tool while pressure is high.
Its infused version grants free flight. That is a substantial change in movement behavior, not merely a longer rush. Save the empowered version when vertical access or aerial repositioning is more important than using Infuse on healing or damage. The correct choice depends on the battlefield and the enemy’s ability to punish your route; no fixed priority is established by the available descriptions.
Deliverance: team-wide health manipulation

You want your primary fire to solve two different problems
Doctrine suits players who enjoy deciding whether each attack should preserve an ally or pressure an enemy. You are comfortable changing targets as the fight changes, rather than committing to healing-only or damage-only behavior.
You like preparing a high-value follow-up
Infuse rewards deliberate sequencing. If you enjoy looking ahead one ability, selecting the right target, and turning a normal action into a stronger one, Doctrine offers that decision repeatedly. The trade-off is cognitive load: you must remember which ability you intend to empower and avoid spending the enhancement accidentally.
You want to increase an ally’s output as well as their survival
Invigorating Drones combine healing with attack speed. Choose Doctrine when you like enabling a teammate’s play rather than only reacting after damage has already occurred. The strongest moment may be a coordinated push, not an emergency at critical health.
You value protected repositioning
Shrouded Momentum gives horizontal movement with damage reduction, and Infuse can convert it into free flight. This is attractive if you want a Support who can relocate through danger and occasionally take a more unusual route through the map.

Doctrine asks you to coordinate a weapon that heals or damages, an empowerment that modifies the next ability, a drone target, movement timing, and a two-sided ultimate. If that number of simultaneous decisions feels distracting, a hero with a more predictable loop may be more comfortable. You dislike abilities whose value depends on teammates
Attack-speed bonuses, Overhealth, and reduced enemy maximum health become more valuable when allies recognize and use the opening. If you prefer a kit whose impact is less dependent on coordination, test whether Doctrine’s team-facing tools feel rewarding before committing to the hero.

A practical decision process before you queue
- Define your preferred contribution. Choose one primary motivation: flexible healing and damage, empowering an ally, protected mobility, or team-wide health manipulation.
- Match that motivation to a documented tool. Use Eternal Scepter for the heal-or-damage choice, Invigorating Drones for healing plus attack speed, Shrouded Momentum for protected horizontal movement, and Deliverance for Overhealth plus reduced enemy maximum health.
- Decide what Infuse is for. Before the round begins, identify whether you are most likely to need an empowered shot, infused drones, free flight, or another ability’s stronger effect. Keep the plan flexible, but do not activate Infuse without a follow-up in mind.
- Pick an ally for Drones by impact, not only by missing health. Consider who can convert attack speed into pressure and who needs immediate healing. The right target changes from fight to fight.
- Reserve movement for a clear purpose. Use Shrouded Momentum to escape, cross danger, or reach a better angle. Treat infused free flight as a route-changing option rather than an automatic upgrade.
- Coordinate Deliverance with an engagement. Its documented effects matter most when allies can use Overhealth and opponents can be pressured while their maximum health is reduced. Avoid treating it as a private survival button.
- Review the result after a match. Ask whether you made useful heal-versus-damage choices, empowered the ability that mattered, selected productive drone targets, and moved without wasting protection. If the answers are mostly yes, Doctrine is probably aligned with your preferences.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using Infuse immediately every time
Symptom: the empowerment is gone before a meaningful target or route appears. Correction: identify the next ability first, then activate Infuse when the intended follow-up is available.
Treating Eternal Scepter as damage-only or healing-only
Symptom: you continue attacking while an ally needs help, or stop applying pressure while the team is stable. Correction: scan ally and enemy conditions between shots and let the weapon’s dual function determine your target.
Sending Drones to the lowest-health ally by habit
Symptom: the heal lands, but the attack-speed benefit creates little pressure. Correction: weigh immediate survival against which teammate can use increased attack speed to change the fight.

Symptom: Shrouded Momentum moves you horizontally but leaves you isolated or still exposed. Correction: choose the safe landing area before starting the rush and use damage reduction to cross a specific danger zone.
