Docker Engine does not have an official fixed CPU or RAM minimum for a VPS. Docker’s installation documentation specifies supported operating systems and, for binary installations, a Linux kernel version of 3.10 or newer, but it does not say that every Docker server must have a particular number of cores or gigabytes of memory.

Your containers determine the real requirement. A small stateless service may run on 1 vCPU and 1–2 GB of RAM, while a multi-service application such as Immich needs 2 CPU cores and at least 6 GB of RAM according to its project documentation. Add memory for the operating system, Docker’s image and volume data, logs, and temporary workload spikes. The safest approach is to size for the heaviest container, then reserve headroom and apply per-container limits.

What Docker itself requires on a VPS

Docker Engine is relatively lightweight compared with the applications it runs. The official Docker installation pages do not publish a universal numeric minimum for CPU or RAM on a VPS. Instead, they identify supported distributions and releases, such as Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 25.10 and 26.04 LTS; Debian 12 and 13; RHEL 8, 9 and 10; and Fedora 43–45. The binary-installation documentation lists Linux kernel 3.10 or newer.

Those are compatibility requirements, not a promise that a particular application will run well on a small server. A host can install Docker successfully and still fail when a database, media indexer, build job or monitoring stack exhausts its memory.

A frequently cited third-party estimate from ServerMania gives 512 MB of RAM as an absolute minimum and 2 GB as a recommendation, with CPU depending on the applications. The page’s publication year is not stated, so treat these figures as a rough lower bound rather than an Engine specification. In practice, 512 MB leaves almost no room for a modern Linux distribution and useful containers.

How to translate an application’s requirements into VPS capacity

Read the documentation for every image or application before choosing a plan. Record the minimum and recommended CPU, RAM and disk figures, then account for services that the application depends on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the largest memory requirement, not an average

RAM is usually the first VPS limit. If one service requires 6 GB and two supporting services require 1 GB each, a 4 GB VPS cannot become adequate by running the containers one at a time if the application is intended to operate together. Add the requirements of services that run concurrently, then reserve memory for the host.

Count CPU bursts as well as idle usage

Many containers are quiet most of the time but use several cores during startup, indexing, encryption, image processing or compilation. A plan with one vCPU may keep a light API online but make a database migration or media import painfully slow. CPU limits can protect neighboring services, but they cannot create processing capacity that the VPS does not have.

Include storage, logs and volumes

Container images, writable layers, named volumes, database files and JSON logs all consume the VPS disk. Virtru’s on-premise host guidance specifies 2 CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 40 GB hard drive for its standard host; its gateway product specifies 8 GB of RAM. The 40 GB figure illustrates that disk is part of sizing even when the question focuses on CPU and RAM.

Published requirements from real Docker workloads

The following figures come from the named projects’ documentation. Publication years were not stated on the pages, so do not interpret them as current guarantees for every release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Workload or source CPU requirement RAM requirement Disk or qualification
Immich 2 CPU cores minimum; 4 recommended 6 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended Application documentation; other storage needs depend on the library
Virtru standard on-premise host 2 CPU 4 GB 40 GB hard drive
Virtru gateway product Not stated 8 GB Gateway-specific figure
Regula worker At least 1 CPU per worker 3 GB per worker Scale memory and CPU with the number of workers
ServerMania general Docker guidance Depends on applications 512 MB absolute minimum; 2 GB recommended Third-party estimate; publication year not stated
Docker Desktop on Linux Not stated 4 GB minimum Desktop product requirement, not a VPS requirement

These numbers span very different software. A Regula worker’s 3 GB requirement cannot be used as a Docker Engine minimum, and Immich’s 6–8 GB guidance reflects its own services and workload. Use the image-specific figure that matches your deployment.

How many CPU cores should a Docker VPS have?

One vCPU: light, single-service deployments

One vCPU can be reasonable for a small reverse proxy, webhook receiver, low-traffic API, static site or development container when the image documentation does not demand more. Keep expectations modest: background jobs, TLS handshakes, compression and package updates compete for the same core.

Two vCPUs: a practical starting point for multiple services

Two vCPUs are a common starting point for a stack containing an application and supporting services. Immich lists 2 cores as its minimum, and Virtru’s standard host also specifies 2 CPU. Two cores allow the operating system, Docker housekeeping and at least one active container to make progress while another service is busy.

Four or more vCPUs: sustained processing and concurrency

Choose four or more vCPUs when the application recommends them, when several containers perform work simultaneously, or when users expect fast imports, builds or media processing. Immich recommends 4 cores. Additional cores help only if the application and its dependencies can use them; they do not compensate for insufficient RAM or slow storage.

CPU limits and shares

Docker can cap a container with fractional or whole CPUs. A limit prevents one workload from consuming every core, but an overly low cap causes throttling and long request times. Start with the application’s recommendation, observe peak usage, and adjust rather than imposing the same limit on every service.

How much RAM does Docker need on a VPS?

1–2 GB: only for genuinely small workloads

A single lightweight container may fit in 1–2 GB if its own documentation supports that range and traffic is low. Leave room for the host operating system, SSH, updates, the Docker daemon, filesystem cache and logs. A nominal 1 GB plan can run out of memory during an image build or restart even when the service is normally idle.

4 GB: a realistic small-stack tier

Four gigabytes is a more comfortable starting point for a reverse proxy plus one or two modest services. It also matches Virtru’s stated 4 GB standard-host requirement. Do not treat 4 GB as enough for every database, search engine or media application; the container documentation takes precedence.

6–8 GB: applications with heavier dependencies

Immich documents 6 GB as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended, with 2 and 4 CPU cores respectively. A VPS in this range provides room for its concurrent services and some host overhead, but large libraries, indexing and transcoding can still require more capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More than 8 GB: concurrency, workers and growth

Increase RAM when you run multiple workers, retain large in-memory caches, build images on the server, host several databases or expect growth. Regula specifies 3 GB per worker, so two workers require at least 6 GB before adding the operating system and other containers.

Docker’s resource-constraint documentation notes that a container memory limit can be set as low as 6 MB with the --memory option. That is a control-plane minimum, not a useful operating requirement: almost any real application needs far more.

Disk, operating system and kernel requirements

Choose a VPS image supported by Docker’s current installation documentation. The listed releases include Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 25.10 and 26.04 LTS; Debian 12 and 13; RHEL 8, 9 and 10; and Fedora 43–45. For a binary installation, the documented kernel requirement is 3.10 or newer.

Reserve disk for the base operating system, unused image layers, container logs, volumes, backups and temporary files. A 40 GB disk, as specified for Virtru’s standard host, can be adequate for a modest service but may be insufficient for media libraries or databases. Configure log rotation and monitor Docker’s storage usage with docker system df; remove unused images only after confirming that they are not needed for rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical VPS sizing method

  1. List every service that runs concurrently. Include the application, database, cache, queue, reverse proxy, workers and monitoring containers.
  2. Collect each image’s minimum and recommended figures. Prefer the image maintainer’s documentation. Record whether a value is per worker, per node or for the entire stack.
  3. Add concurrent RAM requirements. Use recommended values for production when available. Then reserve additional memory for the Linux host, Docker, filesystem cache and short-lived spikes.
  4. Select CPU capacity from the largest requirement and the workload pattern. Treat 2 vCPUs as a starting point for a multi-service stack, 4 when the application recommends it or sustained processing is expected.
  5. Calculate storage. Add image layers, volumes, databases, logs, backups and growth. A disk that is technically large enough on day one can become a failure point as logs and uploads accumulate.
  6. Check the VPS plan’s real limits. Confirm that the provider supplies dedicated or shared vCPU as advertised, usable RAM, swap policy, disk type and network limits. These details affect performance even when the headline numbers match.
  7. Deploy with limits and observe. Measure memory working set, CPU throttling, restart counts, disk consumption and response times before committing to a smaller tier.

Set limits so one container cannot starve the VPS

Without explicit limits, a container can consume available host resources until the kernel invokes the out-of-memory killer or other services become unresponsive. Apply limits appropriate to the application rather than copying the examples unchanged.

Limit a standalone container

docker run -d
  --name api
  --memory=2g
  --cpus=1.5
  example/api:latest

--memory=2g caps the container’s memory, while --cpus=1.5 limits its CPU time to the equivalent of one and a half cores. If the process genuinely needs more, it may be killed or throttled; raise the limit only after confirming that the VPS has headroom.

Declare limits in a Compose file

services:
  api:
    image: example/api:latest
    deploy:
      resources:
        limits:
          cpus: "1.5"
          memory: 2G

Test the behavior of your installed Compose version and deployment mode, particularly if the same file will be used with Swarm or another orchestrator. For a single VPS, verify the effective limits with docker inspect and observe actual usage after startup.

Inspect usage after deployment

docker stats

Use the output to identify sustained memory growth, CPU throttling and containers that regularly approach their limits. A limit should leave enough margin for normal peaks; a container that sits at its cap is undersized even if it has not crashed.

Swap, headroom and failure prevention

Swap can provide emergency breathing room during a short memory spike, but it is much slower than RAM and should not be used to satisfy an application’s normal requirement. Check whether your VPS provider enables swap, how much is available and whether you are allowed to configure it. Keep critical databases and latency-sensitive services from depending on swap.

  • Leave host memory for SSH access, security updates and Docker operations.
  • Set log rotation so a chatty container cannot fill the disk.
  • Alert before memory, CPU or disk reaches saturation rather than waiting for a restart.
  • Test a cold restart; an application that only works after caches are warm may need more RAM.
  • Keep backups outside the container’s writable layer and verify that restore space exists.

Docker Desktop is not a VPS sizing guide

Docker Desktop on Linux lists 4 GB of RAM as a minimum. Desktop runs an additional virtualization and integration layer, so that number should not be copied to a headless VPS. Conversely, a VPS that can install Docker Engine with less memory is not automatically suitable for Desktop or for a demanding application.

Recommended starting points

Deployment pattern Starting CPU Starting RAM When to move up
One lightweight service 1 vCPU 1–2 GB Memory pressure, build jobs or noticeable CPU contention
Small application stack 2 vCPU 4 GB Additional databases, workers, cache growth or sustained traffic
Immich-style multi-service workload 2 vCPU minimum; 4 recommended 6 GB minimum; 8 recommended Large libraries, indexing, transcoding or concurrent users
Multiple Regula workers At least 1 CPU per worker 3 GB per worker, plus host overhead More workers or additional services
Virtru standard host profile 2 CPU 4 GB Gateway deployment, which specifies 8 GB, or added services

These are starting points derived from the cited workload figures, not guarantees for every version or traffic level. The application’s own release-specific requirements override a generic tier recommendation.
