Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
A VPS with Docker can host far more than a single website. The most useful workloads are self-hosted applications, developer and continuous-integration tools, multi-container application stacks, and several small personal services consolidated on one server. Docker packages each service with its dependencies, so applications that need different runtimes or library versions can coexist without being installed directly into the VPS operating system.
That flexibility has an important operational limit: Docker does not automatically make a VPS secure, highly available, or infinitely scalable. You need root or equivalent daemon control, a plan for image updates and backups, and deliberate firewall rules. In particular, a published Docker port can remain reachable even when ufw appears to deny it.

What Docker on a VPS actually means
A VPS gives you a virtual machine with its own operating system, storage, network interface and administrative access. Docker runs a daemon on that operating system. Each container is an isolated process environment built from an image; a container can expose a network port, mount persistent storage and communicate with other containers on a private Docker network.
For a small production server, the usual management layer is Docker Compose. A docker-compose.yml (or compose.yml) file describes services, images, ports, volumes, networks and environment variables. You can then create or update the complete application with one command instead of repeating a collection of package-installation and configuration steps.

Containers share the VPS kernel rather than running separate virtual machines. They are therefore lightweight and quick to replace, but they are not a substitute for host security, backups or redundancy.
The main things people run in Docker on a VPS
| Workload group | Examples | Why a container is useful | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted applications | n8n, Plausible, Ghost, Outline | Repeatable deployment, isolated dependencies and straightforward upgrades | Most need persistent volumes, a domain, TLS and regular backups |
| Developer and CI tools | GitLab, Gitea, Drone CI, self-hosted GitHub Actions or GitLab runners | Separate build environments and predictable tool versions | Build jobs can consume substantial CPU, memory and disk I/O |
| Multi-container applications | A web service with database and cache containers | Compose can create, network and update the stack as one unit | Back up data services separately from disposable application containers |
| Personal service consolidation | Traefik, PostgreSQL, Vaultwarden, Uptime Kuma and selected AI services | Several useful services share one VPS while remaining logically separated | One host remains one failure domain; monitor resources and exposure |
Self-hosted web applications
Docker is a practical way to run an application that publishes a web interface but is not available from your hosting provider’s one-click catalogue. Examples commonly deployed as Compose projects include workflow automation with n8n, analytics with Plausible, publishing with Ghost and collaborative documentation with Outline.
These applications normally need more than one setting. You may have to provide a database connection, a secret key, an external URL and a persistent volume. Treat the container itself as replaceable: the volume and configuration are the parts that must survive a rebuild.
Developer tools and CI runners
GitLab, Gitea and Drone CI are typical container workloads for a development VPS. Docker is also used to host self-managed GitHub Actions runners or GitLab Runners. A runner can start a clean build environment for each job, reducing the chance that one project’s dependencies contaminate another.
CI is resource-hungry by nature. Before putting runners on a small VPS, check available memory, CPU capacity and storage I/O. Limit concurrent jobs when necessary, and avoid placing untrusted build workloads beside sensitive services without a clear isolation and access policy.

Multi-container application stacks
A common pattern is a web application container plus a database container and a cache container. Compose gives the services a private network and stable service names, so the web application can reach the database without exposing the database port to the public internet. The public-facing service is the only one that normally needs a host port.
Keep the stack definition in version control. Record the image versions, environment-variable names, volume locations and upgrade notes. If a deployment fails, you can inspect the previous Compose file and restore the prior image rather than reconstructing the server by hand.
Several personal services on one host
A consolidated VPS can run a reverse proxy such as Traefik, PostgreSQL, n8n, Vaultwarden, Uptime Kuma and other carefully selected services. The reverse proxy can terminate TLS and route different hostnames to containers that are not directly exposed.
Consolidation lowers the number of servers to patch and back up, but it also concentrates risk. A VPS outage affects every service on it, and a memory leak in one workload can starve its neighbours unless you monitor and constrain resource use.
Why use containers instead of installing everything directly?
Isolation for conflicting dependencies
Two applications may require different language runtimes, database clients or library versions. Installing both directly on one operating system can create package conflicts and make upgrades risky. Each image carries the user-space dependencies it expects, allowing those applications to run side by side.

This is isolation, not an absolute security boundary. Containers still share the host kernel and can access any host paths or capabilities you explicitly grant them. Use least-privilege settings and avoid mounting the entire host filesystem into ordinary application containers.
Repeatable deployment and migration
A Compose file describes the intended state of a stack. On a replacement VPS, installing Docker, restoring the project files and restoring the persistent data can reproduce the service without manually repeating every package step. This makes migrations and disaster recovery more predictable.
Simpler updates and rollbacks
Updating a container usually means fetching a newer image and recreating the service while retaining its volume. Before changing a stateful service, take a database-aware backup and confirm that the new image supports your configuration. Keep the previous image reference long enough to roll back if the application or migration does not behave as expected.
When Docker on a VPS is the wrong choice
Shared hosting without root or daemon control
Most shared hosting plans do not give you control of the Docker daemon, kernel networking or required firewall rules. A container definition cannot compensate for that missing access. Use a VPS or another environment explicitly designed to run Docker when you need to manage images, networks and published ports.

No one to maintain images and data
Every image eventually needs updates for application bugs, operating-system packages or security issues. Someone must review changes, apply updates, test the service and verify backups. If nobody owns that work, adding containers increases operational risk rather than reducing it.
Requirements that exceed one host
One VPS is a poor fit when the design requires host-level redundancy, automatic multi-node scheduling or independent scaling across many services. Docker can package workloads, but a single machine cannot provide the availability of multiple failure domains. At that point you need an orchestration and infrastructure design that matches those requirements, not merely more containers on the same VPS.
What you need before deploying
- Administrative access: root or equivalent privileges to install Docker, configure networking and manage the host firewall.
- Capacity: enough memory, CPU and disk for the application, its database, image layers, logs and backups. CI runners and AI services can need much more capacity than a small web service.
- Persistent-storage plan: identify which directories or named volumes contain irreplaceable data. Containers can be recreated; those volumes cannot.
- Domain and TLS plan: decide whether a reverse proxy will be the only public entry point and how certificates will be renewed.
- Update ownership: assign a person or team to review image changes, restart services and handle failed upgrades.
- Backup and restore procedure: a backup is useful only if you can restore it to a clean host and recover the application.
A practical deployment workflow
- Choose the workload and its data. Separate stateless web processes from databases, uploaded files and other persistent data. Write down the ports that must be public and the ports that should stay private.
- Install Docker from its current official distribution instructions. Verify that the daemon is running and that your administrative account can invoke Docker without accidentally granting broader access than intended.
- Create a project directory. Store the Compose file, an environment-file template without real secrets, deployment notes and a backup script in a protected location or version-control repository.
- Define the services. Give the application, database and cache separate services. Put internal services on a private Compose network. Add persistent volumes for data that must survive container replacement.
- Publish only the entry point. Prefer binding an application port to
127.0.0.1when a reverse proxy on the VPS will receive public traffic. Do not publish a database or administration port simply because the image documentation lists one. - Start and inspect the stack. Run
docker compose up -d, then checkdocker compose psanddocker compose logs --tail=100. Confirm that health checks, database migrations and file permissions completed successfully. - Put TLS and routing in front. Configure the reverse proxy with the intended hostnames, certificates and upstream container names. Test both the public hostname and the local upstream before declaring the deployment complete.
- Back up and test recovery. Export databases in a consistent manner, copy uploaded files and preserve the Compose definition. Restore to a separate directory or temporary VPS so that a successful backup is demonstrated rather than assumed.
- Document updates. Record the current image references, the date of each change and the rollback command. Update one stack at a time and watch logs and resource usage afterward.
The Docker port and firewall problem on a VPS
Published ports are the most important networking trap. Docker’s documentation says, “Because these rules are required for the correct functioning of Docker bridge networks, you should not modify the rules created by Docker.” It also states that, by default, external source IP addresses are allowed to connect to ports published on the Docker host’s addresses.
Docker uses iptables by default; the Engine firewall-backend option can select iptables or nftables. The practical consequence is that a host-level ufw deny rule may not control traffic that Docker has redirected to a published container port.
Why a port can stay open
Third-party explanations of the mechanism describe UFW as managing the host’s INPUT chain, while Docker’s published traffic is translated by NAT and processed through forwarding rules. In that arrangement, UFW can report an apparently correct policy while the Docker-published port remains reachable.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
A documented real-world example allowed only ports 22, 80 and 443 with UFW, yet a Nexus service remained reachable on port 8081 because the Compose file published it on 0.0.0.0. The lesson is broader than that one service: a port mapping is an exposure decision, not merely an internal routing convenience.
Safer ways to control exposure
- Bind to localhost: publish the service on
127.0.0.1:HOST_PORT:CONTAINER_PORTand let a reverse proxy be the public entry point. This is suitable when the proxy runs on the same VPS. - Filter in DOCKER-USER: Docker evaluates this chain before its own forwarding rules. Add carefully tested allow and deny rules there when you need host-level filtering of container traffic.
- Use a cloud firewall or security group: restrict inbound traffic before it reaches the VPS. Permit only the ports and source ranges the service actually requires.
Do not disable Docker’s rule management as a first response. Docker advises against doing so for most users because it can break bridge-network connectivity. Change exposure deliberately, then verify the result from outside the host.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to test from outside
Run a connection test from another network or a second server, not only from the VPS itself. For a web service, request the public address with curl; for a raw TCP check, use a tool such as nc against the expected port. Test both an allowed port and a port that should be closed. Compare the result with docker ps, which shows the active port mapping, and with the firewall rules you intended to enforce.
Choosing a setup: direct install, Docker, or more than one host
| Decision factor | Direct installation | Docker on one VPS | Multi-node design |
|---|---|---|---|
| Root access | Needed for system packages and services | Needed for the Docker daemon, networking and firewall integration | Needed across hosts plus orchestration control |
| Dependency isolation | Lowest; packages share the host environment | Strong user-space separation between images | Separation across containers and hosts |
| Firewall model | Host firewall usually controls service listeners directly | Account for Docker’s published-port rules, DOCKER-USER and any cloud firewall | Combine host, container, network and load-balancer controls |
| Operational burden | Fewer moving parts for one simple service | Image, Compose, volume, backup and update management | Scheduling, service discovery, failover and multi-host operations |
| Scaling limit | Bound by the VPS and the installed service | Still bound by one VPS and one failure domain | Can distribute workloads, but adds substantial infrastructure complexity |
Choose Docker when repeatability, dependency isolation or a multi-service layout solves a real problem. Choose a direct installation when one uncomplicated service is easier to operate that way. Choose multiple hosts only when availability or independent scaling justifies the added operational system.
Operational checklist after launch
- Review
docker psand the Compose file for every published port. - Confirm that databases and uploaded files are on persistent storage rather than only inside a writable container layer.
- Limit administrative interfaces to localhost, a VPN or an explicit allowlist.
- Watch disk usage: old image layers, container logs and database backups can fill a VPS unexpectedly.
- Apply image and host updates on a schedule, with a tested rollback path.
- Test service recovery after a reboot and test restoration on a clean environment.
- Perform an external port scan or connection test after firewall changes; a clean UFW status screen is not proof that every Docker-published port is closed.
Bottom line for VPS owners
Docker is most valuable on a VPS when you are running several services, need conflicting runtimes kept apart, or want Compose to make deployment, migration and updates repeatable. Self-hosted applications, CI tools and web/database/cache stacks are natural fits. Shared hosting without daemon access, one uncomplicated WordPress site and requirements for multi-host redundancy are not.
Plan the data first, publish only the ports that must be public, and treat Docker’s firewall path as separate from a basic UFW checklist. Bind internal services to localhost or private networks, filter container traffic with the DOCKER-USER chain or a cloud firewall when appropriate, and always verify exposure from outside the VPS.
