Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
A secure Docker deployment on a Linux VPS uses layers, not a single switch: patch the host and Docker Engine, protect the daemon socket, keep images minimal and verifiable, run containers without unnecessary privileges, expose only required network paths, and separate application data from the container filesystem. Rootless Docker can reduce the impact of a daemon or container compromise, but it has compatibility limits that must be tested before production.
The highest-risk mistake is treating Docker as an ordinary application account. Access to the Docker daemon API is effectively host-root access: a user or container that can control the daemon may be able to mount host paths, start privileged workloads, or alter the host filesystem. The controls below are arranged in the order that reduces the most risk on a typical single Linux VPS.

Understand the Docker attack surface on a VPS
Docker combines a privileged daemon, Linux kernel isolation, container images, virtual networks, mounted volumes, and application code. A weakness in any layer can enlarge the blast radius of an intrusion. Containers are not virtual machines: they share the host kernel, and the daemon may perform host-level operations on their behalf.
Why the daemon socket is root-equivalent
On a standard rootful installation, the Docker daemon runs with host-root privileges. Anyone who can send commands through its Unix socket can ask Docker to create containers, mount arbitrary host directories, change namespaces, or run processes with powerful privileges. Membership in the docker group normally grants that same control even when the user is not listed in /etc/sudoers.

Do not mount /var/run/docker.sock into an untrusted container. A socket-mounted container can issue API requests to the host daemon and turn an application compromise into a host compromise. Treat the socket file, group membership, backups containing the socket, and any remote API endpoint as administrator-only assets.
Assume the kernel is shared
Linux namespaces separate process IDs, mounts, users, networks, and other views; cgroups constrain resource use. They are foundational isolation mechanisms, not a guarantee that a container is harmless. Kernel vulnerabilities, excessive capabilities, unsafe mounts, and a privileged container can bypass much of the intended separation. Keep the kernel and container runtime patched, and layer discretionary and mandatory controls on top of namespaces and cgroups.

Harden the Linux VPS and Docker daemon first
Use a dedicated, minimal host
When practical, dedicate the VPS to Docker workloads rather than placing unrelated public services beside the daemon. Remove or disable services you do not need, keep administrative access limited to SSH, and monitor authentication attempts. A smaller host has fewer packages, listening ports, credentials, and configuration files that an attacker can abuse after a container escape.
Patch every security boundary
Maintain the Linux distribution, kernel, Docker Engine, container runtime, images, application dependencies, and security profiles. Docker publishes security announcements for urgent issues; include that stream in your patch process. Reboot when a kernel update requires it and verify afterward that the expected Docker service and firewall policy are active.
- Define an update window for the host and a separate, documented image-release process.
- Test Engine and kernel upgrades in a staging VPS when workloads rely on special storage, networking, or capabilities.
- Record the Engine version, kernel version, image digests, and exceptions for each production host so rollback is possible.
Restrict daemon control
Keep the Docker API on its local Unix socket by default. If an administrator must manage Docker remotely, prefer SSH transport or mutually authenticated TLS over a trusted management network. Never publish an unauthenticated TCP daemon endpoint to the internet or to a broad private network.
Audit who can read or write the socket and who belongs to the docker group. Remove inactive accounts, avoid sharing administrator credentials, and make privileged access time-limited where your operating process supports it. A web dashboard or automation service that controls Docker deserves the same trust level as root.
Apply host firewall and provider controls
Use the VPS firewall and your hosting provider’s network controls together. Permit SSH only from approved addresses or a management VPN, allow public traffic only to services that must be public, and deny unsolicited access to database, metrics, orchestration, and administrative ports. Review rules after Docker network changes because published ports can create host-level forwarding rules.

Build a trustworthy image supply chain
Start with maintained, minimal bases
Choose a maintained base image from a publisher you trust and remove packages that the application does not need. A smaller image has fewer binaries and libraries available to an attacker. Do not mistake a small image for a secure image: it still requires timely updates and a review of its build provenance.
Scan before deployment
Scan base images, application dependencies, and the final image in continuous integration, then scan again before production deployment. Set a policy for what severity blocks a release, who can approve an exception, and when an exception expires. Scanning is a decision aid; review whether a reported library is reachable and whether a fixed version is available.
Pin releases when reproducibility matters
For production, pin an image by immutable digest rather than relying only on a mutable tag such as latest. Record the digest in deployment configuration and document how a new digest is tested, approved, rolled out, and rolled back. Pinning prevents an unexpected tag change, but it does not replace an update schedule: deliberately refresh the digest to receive security fixes.

- Set an explicit non-root
USERin the final stage when the application supports it. - Use multi-stage builds so compilers, package managers, and debugging tools do not remain in the runtime image.
- Remove package-manager caches and temporary build files from the final layer.
- Copy only the files needed at runtime and set predictable ownership and permissions.
- Do not download unverified scripts during a build; verify checksums or signatures when the publisher provides them.
Keep secrets out of layers and ordinary configuration
Passwords, API keys, private certificates, and tokens must not appear in Dockerfiles, source repositories, build arguments, image layers, or shell history. A secret copied into an earlier layer remains recoverable even if a later layer deletes the file. Environment variables are also visible to processes and may be exposed through inspection or diagnostic output. Use a proper secret-management mechanism available to your deployment platform, grant each service only the secrets it needs, rotate credentials after suspected exposure, and keep secret-bearing backups encrypted.
Run containers with least privilege
Use a non-root UID and GID
Configure the application to run as a dedicated UID and GID inside the container. This limits what a process can modify in its own filesystem and makes accidental ownership of mounted host data less dangerous. Ensure mounted directories are owned or permissioned for that UID; do not “fix” a permission error by switching the entire container back to root.
Drop capabilities, then add only proven exceptions
Linux capabilities divide some traditionally root-only powers into smaller permissions. Start with all capabilities dropped and add a narrowly justified capability only after testing demonstrates that the application needs it. For example, binding a low-numbered port may require a specific networking capability in a rootful container; that is a smaller exception than granting every capability.
docker run --cap-drop=ALL --user 10001:10001 your-image@sha256:immutable-digest
The command is an example baseline, not a universal copy-and-paste deployment. Confirm the UID exists or is compatible with the image, and document every capability you reintroduce. Avoid --privileged; it removes many of the restrictions that make container isolation useful.

Retain the default seccomp profile
Docker’s default seccomp profile is intended to be a sane default for running containers. It blocks a set of sensitive system calls; Docker’s documentation describes the profile as disabling around 44 system calls out of more than 300. Keep it enabled unless a tested workload demonstrates a requirement for a custom profile. If you need an exception, begin with a reviewed, minimal profile rather than disabling seccomp globally, and include the profile in source control and deployment review.
Use AppArmor or SELinux
Where supported by the distribution, apply AppArmor or SELinux policies to constrain file access, executable behavior, and other operations beyond discretionary Unix permissions. Start from a policy appropriate to the image, test it in staging, and record denied operations before deciding whether to refine the policy or change the application. Do not switch mandatory access controls off merely to make a deployment start.
Make the root filesystem read-only
A read-only container root filesystem prevents many persistence and tampering techniques. Give the application narrowly scoped writable volumes or temporary filesystems only where it needs them.
docker run --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:rw,noexec,nosuid,size=64m --user 10001:10001 your-image@sha256:immutable-digest
Adjust paths and options to the application. A database, logger, or runtime that writes caches may need a dedicated volume; keep that volume limited to the required directory rather than making the entire root filesystem writable.

Do not confuse convenience with isolation
Host networking, host PID or IPC namespaces, broad device mappings, unrestricted bind mounts, and privileged mode all reduce isolation. Use them only for a documented requirement, and treat the exception as a higher-risk workload that may belong on a separate VPS.
Choose rootless or rootful Docker deliberately
Rootless Docker runs the daemon and containers as an unprivileged user instead of relying on a host-root daemon. This reduces the consequences of some daemon and container failures, but it does not make unsafe images or exposed services safe. Compatibility depends on the workload and the Linux distribution.
| Decision axis | Rootful Docker | Rootless Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Daemon privilege | Daemon normally runs with host-root privileges; socket access is root-equivalent. | Daemon and containers run in a user context, reducing dependence on host root. |
| Privileged ports | Can bind low-numbered ports subject to capability and policy controls. | Low-numbered ports commonly require a forwarding design or an approved host setting; test the exact distribution. |
| Storage and drivers | Broadest compatibility with storage drivers and host mounts. | Some storage drivers, filesystems, and mount patterns may be unavailable or behave differently. |
| Networking | Conventional bridge, firewall, and port-publishing behavior. | Networking components and performance can differ; verify published ports, VPNs, and service discovery. |
| Isolation depth | Still requires non-root users, dropped capabilities, seccomp, and AppArmor or SELinux. | Reduces daemon privilege but still requires image, network, capability, and kernel controls. |
| Operational burden | Familiar tooling, with a larger consequence if the daemon is compromised. | May require per-user services, additional setup, and workload-specific troubleshooting. |
| Best fit | Workloads needing broad host integration or features unavailable rootlessly. | Services that run without host-root access, privileged ports, or unsupported storage and networking features. |
How to evaluate rootless mode
- Create a dedicated, non-administrative Linux account for the workload and ensure the distribution provides the required subordinate UID and GID ranges.
- Install the distribution’s Docker rootless extras and run Docker’s
dockerd-rootless-setuptool.sh installsetup tool as that user. - Enable the per-user Docker service and set the client’s
DOCKER_HOSTto the user daemon socket as instructed by the installation output. - Run a staging workload that exercises image pulls, persistent volumes, backups, service discovery, health checks, logs, and every published port.
- Verify
docker inforeports rootless operation, then document the storage driver, network implementation, resource limits, and recovery procedure.
Do not migrate merely because rootless is available. If the application needs privileged ports, special devices, host networking, or a storage driver that is unsupported, either redesign the workload, place a narrowly scoped reverse proxy in front of it, or retain rootful Docker with stronger segmentation and privilege controls.

Design networks so a container cannot reach everything
Publish only required ports
A port is an attack surface even when the application behind it is healthy. Publish only user-facing endpoints and required internal paths. Keep databases, queues, admin panels, and metrics on private Docker networks or loopback-bound listeners.
docker run -p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080 your-image@sha256:immutable-digest
Binding to loopback prevents direct internet access to that published port; a reverse proxy or VPN can expose it through a deliberately controlled path. For a public service, bind only the specific host address and port you intend to serve, then enforce the same intent in the host and provider firewalls.
Separate service tiers
Use distinct networks for the front end, application services, and data tier. Attach a service only to the networks it needs, and allow documented service-to-service paths rather than placing every container on one flat bridge.
docker network create frontend
docker network create --internal app_net
docker network create --internal data_net
An internal network is useful for east-west traffic that should not be externally routed. Confirm that the application still has the outbound access it needs for updates or APIs; if it does not, provide a narrowly controlled egress path instead of attaching every service to the public network.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Account for Engine and firewall behavior
Docker Engine 28 introduced networking hardening intended to avoid exposure without explicit user intent for affected Linux iptables setups. This is an improvement, not a substitute for review: behavior depends on the Engine version, distribution, firewall framework, and network configuration. After an upgrade, inspect published ports from an external host, verify loopback bindings, and confirm that required traffic still passes.
Bind management interfaces narrowly
Dashboards, debug endpoints, container registries, and metrics should listen on loopback, a VPN address, or a management subnet. Add authentication and encryption at the application layer where supported. Never assume that an unadvertised port is private; scan the VPS from an independent network and compare the result with your intended exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect volumes, backups, and host data
Persistent volumes outlive containers, so they deserve host-level permissions and backup controls. Create a dedicated directory or volume per service, assign ownership to the service UID, and avoid mounting broad host paths such as the entire root filesystem. A read-only bind mount is safer than a writable one when the application only needs to read configuration or certificates.

- Encrypt VPS disks or provider snapshots at rest when the provider supports it.
- Encrypt backups independently, restrict backup-reader credentials, and test restoration on an isolated host.
- Keep database and upload volumes off networks where untrusted containers can reach administrative interfaces.
- Delete abandoned volumes and snapshots that may contain old credentials or vulnerable application data.
Remember that host users with sufficient filesystem permissions can read rootful Docker’s image and volume data. Host account security and storage encryption therefore remain important even when container settings are strict.
Monitor, test, and document the deployment
Establish a repeatable review
For every service, record its image digest, UID, exposed ports, attached networks, writable paths, capabilities, security profiles, secrets, and backup location. Review the record when the image, Docker Engine, kernel, or application configuration changes.
Observe the daemon and containers
Collect Docker daemon logs, container stdout and stderr, host authentication logs, firewall events, and resource metrics in a protected logging system. Alert on unexpected container creation, new published ports, changes to daemon configuration, repeated authentication failures, and sudden privilege or resource changes. Keep logs out of unbounded writable container layers so a full disk does not become a denial of service.
Test the controls, not just the startup path
- From an external network, verify that only intended ports respond.
- From each container, test that private networks and host services are unreachable unless explicitly required.
- Confirm a non-root process cannot write to protected mounts or install packages at runtime.
- Stop and restore a service from backup, then verify ownership, permissions, and secrets.
- Exercise health checks, log collection, rotation, and incident shutdown procedures.
Perform these checks in staging before tightening a production workload. Security controls that are never tested often fail during an outage, when operators are most tempted to disable them.
A practical deployment sequence
- Prepare the VPS. Apply distribution and kernel updates, remove unnecessary services, restrict SSH, enable the host and provider firewalls, and decide whether the host should be dedicated to Docker.
- Install and patch Docker. Use the distribution or Docker-supported installation method, update to a maintained Engine release, and subscribe to security announcements.
- Choose the daemon model. Test rootless mode first when the application does not need privileged ports, special devices, or unsupported storage and networking features. Otherwise, keep rootful Docker but restrict socket access and isolate the host.
- Prepare images. Select maintained bases, remove build tools from the runtime stage, set a non-root user, scan dependencies, and pin the approved production digest.
- Define runtime restrictions. Drop all capabilities initially, keep the default seccomp profile, apply AppArmor or SELinux where available, use a read-only root filesystem, and add only narrowly scoped writable volumes.
- Build private networks. Separate front-end, application, and data tiers; attach only required services; publish only user-facing ports; and bind administration to loopback or a management network.
- Handle secrets and data. Inject secrets through an appropriate secret mechanism, set volume ownership for the service UID, encrypt backups, and remove credentials from build history and image layers.
- Deploy in staging. Test startup, upgrades, rollback, networking, storage, logging, backups, and failure recovery with the same restrictions planned for production.
- Validate externally. Scan the VPS from outside, inspect Docker’s published-port rules, check firewall behavior, and confirm that no daemon API is reachable without authenticated administration.
- Operate continuously. Patch the host and images, rescan dependencies, review exceptions, rotate secrets, monitor logs, and rehearse restoration and incident response.
Common failures and safe fixes
The application cannot start as a non-root user
Usually the image writes to a root-owned directory or assumes it can bind a privileged port. Create the required directory with ownership for the service UID, move writable state to a dedicated volume, or put a controlled reverse proxy on the host. Do not grant full root or --privileged as the first fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRead-only filesystem errors appear
Identify the exact path being written from logs, then provide a narrowly scoped volume or temporary filesystem for that path. Keep configuration and application binaries read-only. If the application writes unpredictably across the image, fix its directory configuration before weakening the container globally.
Rootless networking or storage behaves differently
Check the rootless daemon’s documented storage driver, user service status, subordinate UID/GID ranges, port-forwarding design, and resource limits. Reproduce the issue in staging. If a required feature remains unsupported, isolate a rootful workload on a dedicated host or redesign the dependency rather than mixing privilege exceptions into every container.
A service is unexpectedly reachable
Inspect container port publishing, host firewall rules, provider firewall rules, reverse-proxy listeners, and Docker network attachments. Remove unused -p mappings, bind administrative ports to loopback or a management address, and retest from outside the VPS. Remember that an application listening on 0.0.0.0 inside a container can be reachable on every published host address.
An image scan reports a vulnerable package
Confirm the affected package and whether a fixed base or dependency release exists. Rebuild from the updated base, rescan, and redeploy by a new immutable digest. If an exception is unavoidable, document the affected component, exposure, compensating control, owner, and expiration date; do not silently suppress the finding.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether a workload belongs on this VPS
| Workload characteristic | Safer placement decision |
|---|---|
| Stateless HTTP service, non-root capable, ordinary bridge networking | Good candidate for rootless Docker after staging validation and strict port binding. |
| Database with persistent storage and private clients | Use a private data network, dedicated volume ownership, encrypted backups, and no public port; rootless feasibility depends on the storage driver. |
| Needs host devices, host networking, or broad mounts | Review whether the requirement can be removed. If not, isolate it on a dedicated VPS and treat it as a high-trust service. |
| Untrusted, user-supplied code | Do not rely on ordinary containers alone. Use stronger isolation and a separate host or sandbox architecture appropriate to the threat model. |
| Management or automation service controlling Docker | Place it on a restricted management network, protect its credentials, and treat compromise as equivalent to host-root compromise. |
