Docker hosting on a VPS means renting a Linux virtual machine, installing Docker Engine (or selecting an image that already includes it), and running your containers under your own server account. You control the operating system, packages, networking and data instead of handing those decisions to a managed container platform. The practical choice is between installing Docker on a clean VPS, which gives you more control over the host, and choosing a Docker-ready image, which reduces initial setup. Whichever route you take, check the VPS operating system and CPU architecture, install the distribution-specific packages, verify Docker and Compose, and review firewall behavior before publishing any port.

What Docker hosting on a VPS actually provides

A VPS is a virtual Linux server with allocated compute, memory, storage and network access. Docker Engine runs on that server and supplies the daemon, container runtime, image handling, networking and volume features needed to launch isolated application processes. Your provider operates the underlying virtualization and physical hardware; you administer the guest operating system and everything above it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This arrangement is useful when you need server-level control: you can choose the Linux distribution, install system packages, decide how containers communicate, attach persistent storage and apply your own update and access policies. It is not the same as a fully managed container service. You remain responsible for hardening the host, controlling exposed ports, updating Docker and the operating system, protecting secrets, backing up application data and recovering from failures.

Docker publishes a general installation guide organized by supported distributions and CPU architectures. Start with the guide that matches the image on your VPS rather than copying commands written for another distribution or architecture: Docker Engine installation overview.

Choose your installation route

There are two legitimate ways to begin. Neither is automatically more secure or more reliable; the difference is where the initial operating-system and package decisions are made.

Decision point Clean VPS with manual installation Docker-ready provider image
Initial effort You select the VPS image, configure the host and follow Docker’s distribution-specific repository instructions. Docker is installed as part of the image or one-click deployment, shortening the first boot process.
Host choice and control You choose and maintain the operating system, repositories and package versions yourself. You accept the image’s supplied operating system, packages and defaults, then take over maintenance after deployment.
Security work You must review administrative access, updates and published ports after installation. You still must review administrative access, updates and published ports; a preinstalled daemon does not remove those tasks.
Lifecycle and support You track Docker’s release channel and the Linux distribution lifecycle directly. You must verify how often the image is refreshed, which OS release it uses and what the provider supports.

A provider image is therefore a time-saving starting point, not a managed security boundary. There is no independent price, performance or reliability comparison established here, so choose based on the control and maintenance model you can operate.

Check the VPS before installing Docker

Do these checks while the server is still clean. They prevent the most common mismatch between an installation guide and the machine you actually rented.

  • Identify the distribution and release. Confirm whether the VPS runs Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS-derived software or another supported Linux distribution. Package names and repository setup differ.
  • Confirm the architecture. Check whether the machine is x86_64/amd64, arm64 or another architecture, then use the matching Docker instructions and image variants.
  • Confirm administrative access. Manual installation normally requires a user with sudo privileges. If you plan rootless mode, confirm that you can edit the user and group mappings required by that mode.
  • Record the network policy. Note the provider’s cloud firewall or security-group settings, the VPS’s local firewall status and which ports are intended to be public. Docker’s port publishing can change how traffic reaches containers.
  • Plan storage separately from the container filesystem. Containers are replaceable; application data must be placed in a persistent location and included in your backup plan.

Install Docker Engine manually on Ubuntu

Docker’s Ubuntu documentation describes an apt-repository route and installs the Engine, command-line client, containerd, Buildx and the Compose plugin together. Follow the current repository and keyring steps in Docker’s Ubuntu installation guide; those steps vary with the Ubuntu release and architecture.

  1. Inspect the host. Record the Ubuntu release and architecture, and update the base package index using your normal administrative process.
  2. Configure Docker’s official apt repository. Use the repository and signing-key procedure shown in the Ubuntu guide for the release you identified. Do not substitute a repository intended for a different Ubuntu codename or architecture.
  3. Install the engine and companion packages. The package set documented by Docker is docker-ce, docker-ce-cli, containerd.io, docker-buildx-plugin and docker-compose-plugin. On a correctly configured Ubuntu repository, the package command is:
    sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
  4. Start and enable the service. Use the service-management instructions in the same guide so the daemon starts now and after a reboot. Check the service status before attempting a deployment.
  5. Review access permissions. Decide which local users may invoke Docker. Membership in a host group that can control the Docker daemon is a privileged capability; grant it deliberately and use sudo until your access policy is clear.

Docker documents a convenience installation script, but recommends it only for testing and development environments. For a long-lived VPS, the distribution-specific repository method makes the package source and update path explicit.

Verify Docker and Compose before deploying an application

Verification should prove both that the daemon is reachable and that the Compose integration you intend to use is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the harmless test container with sudo docker run hello-world. A successful run downloads the test image if necessary, creates a container and prints a confirmation message.
  2. Check the client and server versions with docker version. If you are using sudo, run sudo docker version until your user permissions are configured.
  3. Confirm the Compose plugin with docker compose version. The current command is the space-separated Compose v2 form; a legacy standalone docker-compose binary is a different installation.
  4. Record the installed versions and the image architecture. Keep those details with your deployment notes so an update or recovery operation can reproduce the environment.

If the test container cannot connect, inspect the daemon service status and local permissions before changing application settings. If an image cannot be pulled, check outbound DNS and HTTPS access from the VPS and verify that the image has a variant for the host architecture.

The firewall issue Docker explicitly warns about

Docker’s Ubuntu documentation states: “If you use ufw or firewalld to manage firewall settings, be aware that when you expose container ports using Docker, these ports bypass your firewall rules.” The warning appears in Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu.

In practical terms, a rule that appears to deny a port in the host firewall may not be sufficient to prevent traffic from reaching a port published by Docker. Treat port publishing and firewall policy as one change, not two independent settings.

  • List every port you intend to publish and the reason it must be reachable.
  • Check both the provider-level firewall or security group and the VPS’s local firewall configuration.
  • Publish only the interface and port required by the application; keep databases, queues and administration endpoints private whenever possible.
  • After starting a container, test from an allowed network and from a deliberately disallowed network. Confirm that the observed exposure matches your policy.
  • Recheck the rules after Docker, the operating system or the provider image is updated.

Do not assume that a container is private merely because the host firewall shows no allow rule for its published port. The safest default is to publish nothing until you have a reason and a test for each exposed service.

Deploy a first container without confusing the test with production

The hello-world container validates the engine but does not represent a persistent service. A real deployment normally requires an image tag, environment settings, a network, published ports and a storage plan. Use the image maintainer’s documentation for those application-specific values, then make the deployment reproducible with a Compose file when it contains multiple services or non-trivial configuration.

Before starting an application container, write down:

  • the exact image name and immutable tag or digest;
  • the container’s listening port and the host port, if any, that will be published;
  • required environment variables and where their secrets will be stored;
  • which directories or named volumes hold irreplaceable data;
  • health checks, restart behavior and dependencies on other services;
  • the rollback image and the procedure for restoring data if an update fails.

Start with a private binding or an internal network when the service does not need Internet access. Expose a public HTTP or HTTPS endpoint only after the firewall and TLS design are ready. A successful docker run command proves that a process started; it does not prove that the application is backed up, encrypted, monitored or safe to expose.

Rootless Docker: a lower-privilege option

Rootless mode runs the Docker daemon and containers as a non-root user. Docker describes it as a way to mitigate potential vulnerabilities in the daemon and container runtime, but it is a mitigation rather than a guarantee of security. You still need secure images, least-privilege application settings, updates and network controls.

The documented prerequisites include the newuidmap and newgidmap helper utilities and at least 65,536 subordinate user IDs and group IDs assigned to the user. Verify those mappings and the helper binaries before attempting the rootless setup; otherwise the daemon may fail during initialization or be unable to create the required user namespace.

Rootless operation changes practical behavior. Low-numbered host ports, system-wide service management, storage paths and access to devices may require different configuration than a rootful daemon. Test the complete application workflow, not just the daemon start, and document which user owns images, volumes, logs and sockets. If your application or monitoring tools require root-only host features, confirm compatibility before choosing this mode.

Using a VPS image with Docker already installed

Some providers publish images that include Docker. For example, Hetzner’s Docker CE image documentation describes an image based on Ubuntu 24.04 that includes the Compose plugin. DigitalOcean’s Docker documentation describes a Docker one-click Droplet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are examples of documented image offerings, not a ranking or endorsement. Before selecting one, verify the current image date, underlying OS lifecycle, installed Docker and Compose versions, default users, firewall behavior, update method, available regions, support scope and whether the image is rebuilt when security fixes are released. Once the VPS is running, perform the same verification and exposure tests as for a manual installation.

Operational work that remains yours

A Docker-ready VPS does not automatically provide production operations. Treat these as explicit work items in your deployment plan:

  • Persistent data: separate databases, uploads and other state from disposable container layers, and test that data survives container replacement.
  • Backups: define what is backed up, how often, where copies are stored and how you will perform a full restore. A snapshot that cannot be restored is not a tested backup.
  • Updates: track Docker Engine, Compose, the Linux distribution and every base image. Schedule updates, read release notes and keep a rollback path.
  • Secrets: avoid embedding credentials in images or public Compose files. Restrict file permissions and rotate credentials when access changes.
  • TLS and ingress: decide how certificates are issued, renewed and protected before exposing an application to the Internet.
  • Monitoring: watch host disk, memory, CPU, container health and logs. Set thresholds that trigger action before the VPS runs out of resources.
  • Recovery: document how to recreate the VPS, retrieve images, restore data and redirect traffic after a failed update or host loss.

The exact commands for these tasks depend on the application, distribution and chosen storage and networking design. They should be validated separately rather than inferred from the fact that Docker installed successfully.

Common failure branches

The daemon is not reachable

Check the Docker service status, recent service logs and whether your user has permission to access the daemon socket. Rootless and rootful installations use different service contexts, so confirm which mode you configured before changing permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The container starts but the site is unreachable

Confirm that the process is listening on the container port you mapped, that the host port is not already occupied and that the provider firewall permits the intended traffic. Remember that Docker-published ports may bypass ufw or firewalld rules; test the actual network path instead of relying on a rule listing.

The image will not run on the VPS

Compare the image’s available architectures with the VPS architecture. An amd64-only image will not run natively on an arm64 host. If the image supports several architectures, pull the tag again and inspect the selected variant before troubleshooting the application itself.

A rootless setup fails during initialization

Verify newuidmap, newgidmap and the user’s subordinate UID/GID ranges. Confirm that the ranges meet Docker’s documented minimum of 65,536 each and that the user session can start the rootless service.

An update breaks the service

Stop further changes, record the image and package versions, inspect logs and restore the last known-good image and data according to your rollback plan. Do not delete persistent data while investigating; container replacement and data recovery are separate operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a VPS is the right Docker host

A VPS is a good fit when you want a dedicated Linux environment, administrative control and the flexibility to run one or several containerized services without buying physical hardware. It is less suitable if you need a provider to operate patching, backups, high availability, traffic management and incident response for you. In that case, compare managed services separately rather than assuming a preinstalled Docker image supplies those guarantees.

The decision is straightforward: choose manual installation when you need control over the operating system and package lifecycle; choose a Docker-ready image when reducing first-boot work matters and its maintenance details meet your standards. In both cases, verify the engine, keep Compose available for reproducible multi-container deployments, and treat published ports, data protection and recovery as deliberate engineering decisions.
