Docker containers can replace paid services, but installing them does not automatically save money. The $100-per-month figure in the headline is an individual claim, not an independently verified or typical result. To know whether a home lab saves you money, compare subscriptions you actually cancel with the hardware, electricity, storage, backup, and maintenance costs of running replacements.
What the $100 claim does—and does not—tell you
No independently verified evidence establishes that this particular home-lab setup saves $100 each month. The available sources do not identify the author’s seven containers or show which bills were cancelled, what the server cost, or how power and storage were counted. Treat the figure as a personal result, not a forecast for your own setup.
A useful calculation starts with a defined baseline: list what you pay now, what you would stop paying, and what new costs self-hosting adds. If you keep a subscription because the replacement lacks a feature you need, that subscription is not a saving. If you already own suitable hardware, its purchase cost may be sunk, but electricity and any added drives or backup capacity still matter.

Net monthly savings = cancelled recurring bills − replacement fees − electricity − storage and backup costs − monthly hardware cost
For hardware, choose and state an amortization period rather than treating a purchase as free. For example, divide the amount you assign to the server by the number of months over which you expect to use it. That is a budgeting choice, not a universal accounting rule. Keep gross subscription savings separate from net savings so the two figures are not confused.

Which self-hosted apps could replace paid services?
A June 2026 guide names several self-hosted apps as possible alternatives to subscription services. They are candidates, not confirmation of the title author’s stack, and each replaces only a particular function. The guide also lists Nextcloud for files and office use; it does not establish that any of these apps delivers the same features, reliability, or convenience as a paid service for every household.
Recommended Free Tools
| App | Possible role | What to check before counting a saving |
|---|---|---|
| Immich | Personal photo library and backup; the June 2026 guide presents it as a Google Photos alternative. | The guide says machine-learning features use RAM. Confirm that the setup meets your photo workflow and backup needs before cancelling another service. The official Immich introduction is available, but the cited material does not establish detailed feature equivalence or a backup guarantee. |
| Jellyfin | Media server for files you already have. | Its official Docker instructions show persistent configuration and cache storage, plus a mounted media directory. Jellyfin does not supply licensed content or, by itself, justify cancelling a streaming service. |
| Home Assistant | Local smart-home control and automation. | The project says the software is free and open source. Local-protocol devices can work without internet, while vendor-cloud-dependent devices may not; remote access and some voice integrations can require optional Home Assistant Cloud. |
| Vaultwarden | Password-management category. | The June 2026 guide lists it as a possible subscription alternative, but the available evidence does not establish security equivalence or suitability. Do not move critical credentials on the assumption that a self-hosted option is automatically as safe or recoverable as your current arrangement. |
| Pi-hole | Network-level DNS filtering and ad blocking. | The guide describes it as useful across devices on a home network. The available evidence does not measure ad exposure avoided or show a direct reduction in bills. |
| Nextcloud | File storage and office services. | The guide identifies it as a possible alternative to Dropbox or Google Drive. Check required storage capacity, collaboration features, client compatibility, reliability, and recovery before treating it as a full replacement. |
These are six examples from the guide, not an asserted seven-container list. The seventh service in the headline’s claimed setup is not identified by the available evidence, so it should not be guessed.

What a home lab costs beyond the software
Hardware and workload
Self-hosted software runs somewhere: an existing computer, a mini PC, a Raspberry Pi, a NUC, or a virtual machine are among the host options listed by the Home Assistant project FAQ. Whether you need new hardware depends on the services, their workload, and what equipment you already own. A June 2026 guide recommends a mini PC with 8 GB or more for its Immich setup, citing memory use for machine-learning features; that is the guide author’s recommendation, not an official Immich minimum or a universal specification for a home lab.
Persistent storage and backups
Containers do not remove the need to keep important data on persistent storage. Jellyfin’s Docker example maps configuration and cache to persistent locations and mounts a media directory from the host. Photos, documents, and media can make storage a substantial part of the setup, so estimate capacity from your own library and future growth. A NAS or additional drive can provide capacity, but storage on one device is not an independent backup; plan a separate recovery copy and include its ongoing cost.

Power, maintenance, and cloud dependencies
Hardware uses electricity, and the actual cost depends on measured consumption and your local electricity rate. Measure the equipment under its normal workload and multiply its energy use by your rate; do not substitute a generic server-power estimate for your own setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Home Assistant states that its software is free and open source, with no subscription required to use it and no features locked behind a paywall. Hardware and optional Home Assistant Cloud are separate costs. Its Container installation also places responsibility for the Linux host and updates on the user. Docker can consolidate services, but it does not eliminate patching, troubleshooting, or recovery work.
Local versus cloud operation affects resilience as well as cost. Home Assistant says local protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome do not need an internet connection; devices that require a vendor cloud may become unreachable during an outage. Optional remote-access and voice-assistant integrations can also depend on Home Assistant Cloud.
How to test whether self-hosting makes sense for you
- Write down the current baseline. List each subscription, its actual recurring charge, the function it provides, and whether you would genuinely cancel it if a self-hosted replacement worked.
- Choose replacements by required function. Check client support, collaboration, remote access, reliability, and any features you rely on. A similar category name does not prove that an app meets your needs.
- Inventory hardware and storage. Decide whether an existing machine can host the workload or whether you need a mini PC, other host, drives, or a NAS. Estimate capacity and provide an independent backup path.
- Estimate ongoing costs. Include measured electricity use at your rate, storage and backup fees, replacement hardware over a stated useful life, and any optional cloud service or other recurring fee.
- Run the replacement before cancelling. Test normal use and recovery, including whether you can access the service from the devices and locations you need. Keep the existing service until the replacement is reliable enough for your requirements.
- Recalculate after the change. Record the cancellation date and actual bill avoided, then compare it with ongoing and amortized costs. Report gross subscription savings and net monthly savings separately.
What an auditable $100-per-month claim needs
To substantiate a specific monthly savings figure, a before-and-after account should identify every cancelled service and its actual cost, when it was cancelled, any replacement fees, the hardware purchase and amortization period, measured energy use and electricity rate, and ongoing storage and backup costs. Without those details, readers cannot tell whether the claim means $100 in gross bills no longer paid or $100 left after operating costs.
