In Docker, container-managed persistence means storing data outside a container’s writable layer so it can remain available after that container is replaced or removed. The usual choice for Docker-managed application data is a volume; a bind mount shares a chosen host path with the container, while a tmpfs mount holds temporary data in memory.

What does container-managed persistence mean in Docker?

It describes a pattern, not a separate Docker feature name: put data that must outlive a container in storage mounted into the container, rather than writing it only to that container’s writable layer. Docker describes volumes as “persistent data stores for containers, created and managed by Docker.” The volume has a lifecycle independent of any one container, and Docker manages its location on the host.

A container’s writable layer belongs to that container. If the container is destroyed, data stored only in that layer is lost. A volume can instead be mounted into a replacement container, which can then use the retained files.

Which Docker storage option should you use?

Storage option What it is for What happens when the container stops or is removed? Host access
Volume Docker-managed persistent application data, including database files Contents exist outside the lifecycle of a particular container and can be used by another container that mounts the volume. Docker manages the storage location; the container accesses it through its mount.
Bind mount A specific host file or directory that the host and container need to share, such as source code or configuration Files are in the host path, not the container’s writable layer. Directly maps the selected host path into the container. It is writable by default, so container processes can change host files.
tmpfs mount Temporary data that should be memory-backed rather than retained Contents disappear when the container stops. Memory-backed mount; not intended for durable files.

How do you keep data when a Docker container is removed?

Create or use a named volume, mount it at the directory where the application writes its data, and mount that same volume when starting a replacement container. Docker’s getting-started guide demonstrates a volume named log-data mounted at /logs: files written there remain available to a new container using the volume after the original container is deleted.

For a database, mount a volume at the database’s data directory so its files are not held only in the container’s writable layer. Docker demonstrates this pattern in its database guide. The correct mount path depends on the database image and its configuration.

Does persistence count as a backup?

No. A volume keeps files separate from a particular container, but that alone does not protect them from deletion, corruption, host failure, or other data loss. Treat persistence and backup as separate needs: use a backup process appropriate to the application and verify that data can be restored.

Is this definition universal across container platforms?

No. This explanation is specific to Docker’s documented storage options. Other container platforms may use different names, provisioning rules, lifecycle behavior, or persistence guarantees. Docker Compose likewise describes volumes as persistent data stores implemented by the container engine, but that does not establish identical behavior across every platform.
