Docker Compose V2 is the Go-based Compose implementation built into the Docker CLI. You run it as docker compose, not the legacy docker-compose executable. V2 uses the rolling Compose Specification, which unified the old 2.x and 3.x formats. The top-level version key no longer selects a schema, so a safe migration is mainly a command, installation, configuration, and automation audit—not a format-number conversion.
This guide explains the behavioral differences, supported installation paths, project-name rules, environment-variable changes, validation commands, and the script failures most often seen after an upgrade.

Compose V1 and V2 at a glance
Compose V1 was a separate Python program first released in 2014. Its command was docker-compose. Compose V2 was announced in 2020, rewritten in Go, and delivered as a Docker CLI plugin invoked with docker compose. Docker’s current history documentation describes Compose V5, released in 2025, as functionally identical to V2 for command-line behavior, with an official Go SDK as its primary distinction. Migration guides that say “V2” generally mean the docker compose behavior described here.

What actually changed in Compose V2
The command moved inside the Docker CLI
The visible change is the space between docker and compose. V1 treats docker-compose as its own executable. V2 is a subcommand handled by the Docker CLI, so Docker’s normal context selection, configuration, and plugin discovery apply. A shell, Makefile, CI job, or runbook that calls the hyphenated command can therefore fail even when the YAML file is valid.

Use the following checks on a host that should run V2:
docker version
docker compose versionThe first command confirms that the Docker CLI can reach the engine; the second confirms that the Compose plugin is installed and discoverable. A working engine without the second command means the plugin is missing, disabled, or not on the CLI’s plugin path.

V2 is compiled Go code distributed with Docker’s supported tooling rather than a separately managed Python package. Docker Desktop includes it. On Linux, install the Compose CLI plugin alongside Docker Engine and the Docker CLI. Docker documents the old standalone binary only for backward compatibility and says that installation route is not recommended. Pin a specific Compose release only when your operational policy requires it; otherwise, keep the plugin updated with the supported Docker distribution.
Legacy format numbers were replaced by one specification
The Compose Specification merged the capabilities of the old 2.x and 3.x file formats. You no longer choose between those behavior sets by changing a number in the YAML. Compose validates the model against the current specification and warns when a legacy schema marker is present.
Some defaults and automation behavior differ
Most service keys continue to work, but scripts can expose differences that interactive use hides. V2 allocates a terminal for docker compose exec by default. In a noninteractive CI process, that can produce “input is not a TTY” errors or leave a job waiting for terminal input. Add -T (or --no-tty) when the command is intended for automation.

The Compose Specification and the obsolete version key
The Compose Specification is Docker’s latest recommended file format. The top-level version property remains defined only for backward compatibility; it is informative and does not select a parser schema. Docker’s documentation states that V2 ignores this element and emits an obsolete-field warning when it is used.
For a modern file, remove the key when practical:

- '8080:80'Keeping version: '3.8', for example, does not force 3.8 semantics. Conversely, changing it to version: '2' does not restore V1 behavior. If an internal tool still checks for the field, leave it temporarily, document that it is informational, and plan its removal after that tool is updated.
Which Compose file does V2 load?
V2 supports the historical docker-compose.yaml and docker-compose.yml names for compatibility. The preferred names are compose.yaml and compose.yml. If both a canonical and a legacy filename are present, Compose prefers compose.yaml. This precedence can make a migration appear ineffective when you edit the older file but V2 is reading the newer one.
Before changing a file, identify exactly what the command will load. Check the working directory, any -f options, and the COMPOSE_FILE environment variable. Multiple files are merged in the order supplied, so an override file can replace or extend values from the base file.

docker version
docker compose versionIf the engine is stopped, start Desktop before testing a project. A successful plugin version check does not by itself prove that the selected Docker context is reachable.
Linux Engine with the Compose CLI plugin
On Linux, install the Compose CLI plugin through the package channel appropriate for your Docker Engine and distribution, alongside the Docker CLI. Verify the plugin with docker compose version. Keep the plugin managed by the same update process as the engine where possible, and ensure CI runners receive it as well as developer workstations.
Standalone binary
The standalone Compose binary is a legacy backward-compatibility option. It preserves the old installation style but does not provide the supported CLI-plugin lifecycle. Use it only when an environment cannot be changed immediately, and treat that as a temporary exception with an owner and removal date.
A migration procedure that is safe for teams and CI
- Inventory every invocation. Search shell scripts, Makefiles, task runners, CI definitions, deployment hooks, documentation, and scheduled jobs for
docker-compose. Include quoted strings and scripts generated by templates. - Install and verify V2 on every execution host. Confirm
docker compose versionon laptops, build agents, release runners, and production jump hosts. Do not assume that installing Docker on one machine updates another. - Change the executable form. Replace
docker-composewithdocker composewhile preserving the command and option order. For example,docker-compose up -d apibecomesdocker compose up -d api. - Identify the active files. Check
-farguments,COMPOSE_FILE, the working directory, and whether both canonical and legacy filenames exist. Make the preferred file explicit in automation when ambiguity is possible. - Render the model before starting services. Run
docker compose configfrom the project directory. This parses YAML, interpolates variables, merges the selected files, resolves extensions, and prints the canonical configuration. Theconvertcommand is an alias. Save the rendered output as a review artifact in CI when configuration changes need approval. - Remove or document the legacy schema marker. Delete the top-level
versionkey when dependent tooling permits. If it must remain, expect the obsolete-field warning and make clear that it is not controlling validation. - Audit environment variables. Remove V1-only settings listed in the next section, then replace them with current Docker configuration mechanisms where Docker documents an equivalent. An ignored variable is more dangerous than an error because it can create a false sense of control.
- Freeze project naming deliberately. Set a project name explicitly when scripts, monitoring, backups, or network policies refer to generated resource names. Test the resulting container, network, and volume names before rollout.
- Test compatibility behavior intentionally. If an application depended on V1’s legacy interpretation, run a controlled test with
--compatibility, compare the result, and document why the flag is required. Do not add it globally without evidence. - Make noninteractive commands noninteractive. Add
-Tto automateddocker compose execcalls. Also check for commands that expect a prompt, a terminal-sized output stream, or an attached log session. - Roll out in stages. Validate the rendered configuration, start an isolated project, run health checks and smoke tests, then migrate shared runners and production jobs. Keep a rollback path to the last known-good script and plugin package.
What docker compose config catches before deployment
config is the most useful migration checkpoint because it shows what Compose will actually submit to the engine rather than what a human thinks the YAML says. Run:
docker compose configUse it to find missing variables, unintended overrides, malformed YAML, duplicate service definitions, and differences between local and CI file sets. Review the output for:

- Image names and tags after variable substitution.
- Published ports and network attachments.
- Volume source paths, especially relative paths resolved from the project directory.
- Profiles and services that are excluded unless explicitly enabled.
- Environment values that may have been supplied by a shell, an
.envfile, or a later override file.
Run the command with the same -f options and environment used by the deployment job. A local render is not equivalent if CI supplies different variables or files.
V1 environment variables that V2 ignores
Compose V2 ignores several variables that affected the old Python client. Leaving them in a shared environment file does not preserve their behavior.

Do not silently rename these variables and assume the result is equivalent. Confirm the replacement’s scope—client, daemon, Desktop, or CI—and test it under the same context used in production.
Project names, generated resources, and why names suddenly differ
Compose derives a project name that prefixes containers, networks, and (when unnamed) volumes. V2 applies this precedence order:
- The command-line
-poption. - The
COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAMEenvironment variable. - The top-level
nameelement in the Compose file. - The project directory name.
Project names may contain lowercase letters, digits, dashes, and underscores. A directory name with spaces, uppercase characters, or punctuation can therefore fail validation or produce a different normalized name than V1 did. Set -p or COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME in automation when resource identity matters, and use a stable value per environment to avoid collisions.

Changing the project name creates a new namespace. Existing containers and networks under the old name are not automatically adopted. Plan cleanup and data migration separately, especially when named volumes contain state.
Common post-upgrade failures and fixes

Using --compatibility without masking problems
The --compatibility option can help when a project depends on selected legacy behavior, but it is not a universal V1 switch. It should be a deliberate, tested exception. Compare the rendered model and runtime behavior with and without the flag, record which service setting requires it, and remove it once the Compose file is expressed in the current specification.
Do not use the option to suppress warnings or postpone understanding a changed deployment. Compatibility mode can preserve a narrow behavior while leaving other V1 assumptions—such as ignored environment variables, project naming, or TTY allocation—unchanged.
A practical validation checklist
- Command: every caller uses
docker composeand the target host passesdocker compose version. - Engine:
docker versionsucceeds under the intended Docker context. - Files: canonical and override filenames, working directory, and
-forder are known. - Schema: the file follows the Compose Specification; the obsolete
versionmarker is removed or consciously retained. - Render:
docker compose configproduces the expected services, variables, ports, networks, volumes, and profiles. - Environment: no V1-only variable is relied upon.
- Names: project, container, network, and volume names are valid and stable.
- Automation:
execcommands use-Twhere no terminal exists, and jobs do not depend on interactive prompts. - Compatibility: any use of
--compatibilityhas a documented reason and a test case. - Rollback: the previous script, configuration, and plugin package can be restored if a staged deployment fails.
Bottom line for a V1-to-V2 migration
Replace the hyphenated command, install the supported Compose plugin, validate the fully resolved model, and audit automation assumptions. Do not convert version: '2' to version: '3' as a migration strategy: both are legacy markers under the current specification. The failures that matter most after upgrading usually come from an uninstalled plugin, a different file being selected, ignored V1 environment variables, changed project names, or an unexpected TTY—not from the absence of a format number.
