Secure Docker on a VPS by treating both the host and the Docker daemon as production infrastructure: patch them, keep the daemon socket private, use small trusted images, run workloads with the fewest privileges possible, protect secrets, and keep host security controls enabled. Rootless Docker can reduce the damage from a daemon or runtime exploit, but it does not replace kernel, operating-system, image, or network hardening.

The order matters. A leaked Docker API or an unpatched host can defeat careful application-level settings, while a privileged container or sensitive host mount can turn a routine application compromise into host takeover.

What secure Docker on a VPS actually means

A VPS normally combines a public network address, a general-purpose Linux host and several services that may share the same kernel. Docker adds another control plane: the daemon can create containers, mount host paths, configure networking and change firewall state. Anyone who gains equivalent control of that daemon can usually control every container and may be able to reach the host.

Docker security therefore has four layers:

  • Host layer: the VPS operating system, kernel, SSH access, firewall and mandatory-access controls.
  • Daemon layer: who can reach Docker and what interfaces the daemon listens on.
  • Image and supply-chain layer: where images come from, what packages they contain and how they are built.
  • Container layer: user IDs, Linux capabilities, mounts, network paths, filesystem permissions and runtime secrets.

Hardening one layer does not compensate for abandoning another. Rootless mode, for example, changes the daemon’s privilege boundary but cannot make an untrusted image trustworthy or an exposed API safe.

The Docker security checklist for a VPS

Priority Control What it prevents or limits How to verify
1 Patch the host OS and Docker Engine Known container-escape and daemon vulnerabilities Review the OS update status and run docker version; confirm both client and server components are on an approved release.
2 Keep the Docker API off the network Remote users creating containers or mounting the host Inspect daemon configuration and listening sockets; only the local Unix socket should be reachable unless remote administration is a documented requirement.
3 Use trusted, minimal base images Unneeded packages and vulnerable dependencies Record the registry, image digest and build source for every production image.
4 Avoid privileged containers Broad host-equivalent capabilities Review deployment files for privileged: true or --privileged.
5 Run applications as non-root users Impact of an application-level compromise inside a container Check the image’s declared user and the runtime user shown by docker inspect.
6 Limit bind mounts and capabilities Reading or altering sensitive host resources Audit mounts, Linux capabilities and security options in the final deployment configuration.
7 Inject secrets at runtime Credentials persisting in image layers or source history Search Dockerfiles and image history for tokens, keys and passwords.
8 Keep SELinux, AppArmor and seccomp protections enabled Unsafe system calls and unauthorized access Check the host policy status and container security options before deployment.
9 Restrict container-to-container communication Lateral movement after one service is compromised Document which networks and service links are required; remove unused paths.

Patch the VPS host and Docker Engine first

Keeping the host OS and Docker Engine current is the first security rule because a vulnerability in the kernel, container runtime or daemon can permit a container escape. An attacker who escapes may obtain host-root authority regardless of how carefully an individual application was configured.

Use a repeatable maintenance process

  1. Subscribe to security updates for the VPS distribution and schedule a maintenance window.
  2. Apply operating-system updates, including kernel and container-runtime packages.
  3. Restart services or reboot when the update requires it; a package being installed does not mean the vulnerable process is already replaced.
  4. Update Docker Engine and its related components from the distribution or vendor channel you have approved.
  5. Run docker version and docker info after maintenance. Confirm the server-side daemon is running the intended release and that storage, security options and rootless status match your design.
  6. Record the date, versions and rollback plan. Test a representative deployment after every engine or kernel change.

Do not treat a long-lived VPS snapshot as a security control. A restored snapshot can reintroduce an old kernel, daemon or image even if the current host was patched.

Do not expose the Docker daemon socket

The Docker daemon socket is an administrative interface, not an application API. The standard local Unix socket should remain local. OWASP’s guidance specifically warns against exposing the daemon socket to the network, including making it available from containers. Anyone who can control the API can create a container, mount host directories, replace workloads or otherwise operate Docker without physical access to the VPS.

Check the daemon’s exposure

  1. Inspect the daemon configuration for TCP listeners and remove any listener that is not required.
  2. Use a socket-inspection command such as ss -lntp to see whether a Docker service is listening on a network address.
  3. Review firewall rules from outside the VPS. A service that is not reachable externally should still not be unnecessarily bound to a broad interface.
  4. Audit container definitions for mounts of the Docker socket, commonly represented as /var/run/docker.sock. Remove the mount unless a narrowly scoped, separately reviewed control-plane integration genuinely needs it.

If remote administration is unavoidable, place it behind a private management network and strong authentication, restrict source addresses at the firewall and monitor every API client. Do not assume that TLS alone makes an unrestricted Docker API safe; authenticated users may still have full daemon control.

Build from trusted, minimal images

Docker’s build guidance recommends a trusted source and a small base image. Fewer packages mean fewer potential vulnerabilities, fewer binaries for an attacker to abuse and a smaller amount of software to patch.

Choose and pin the base

  • Pull from a registry and publisher your team has explicitly approved.
  • Prefer a maintained minimal base that contains only what the application needs at runtime.
  • Pin production deployments to an immutable digest rather than relying only on a moving tag. Keep a record of the human-readable tag for maintenance, but deploy the digest you reviewed.
  • Separate build-time tools from the runtime image with a multi-stage build. Compilers, package managers and test data should not remain in the final stage.
  • Remove caches, package indexes and temporary files where the package system permits it; this reduces image size but does not replace vulnerability scanning.

Keep the build reproducible

Review Dockerfiles as code. Disallow arbitrary remote scripts, verify downloaded artifacts where a project publishes checksums or signatures, and make dependency versions explicit. Scan the resulting image and its software bill of materials in the same pipeline that publishes it. A scanner finding is a decision point, not an automatic reason to suppress the issue: determine whether the package is reachable, whether a fixed version exists and whether the image should be rebuilt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run containers with the least privilege

A container is not a security boundary that makes root harmless. A process running as root inside a container has more opportunity to exploit a runtime flaw, misuse a mounted path or damage application data. Run the service as a dedicated non-root UID whenever the software supports it.

Set a non-root user

  1. Create a dedicated user and group in the image, with ownership of only the directories the application must write.
  2. Declare that user in the image or deployment configuration.
  3. Start the application and verify its effective UID from inside a test container.
  4. Give write access only to specific data directories. Keep the application code and configuration read-only where practical.

Some software requires a low-numbered port or writes to a fixed path. Adapt the image or use a higher internal port and a reverse proxy instead of reverting the whole container to root.

Drop capabilities and block privilege changes

Linux capabilities divide root’s powers into smaller units. Drop all capabilities first where possible, then add only the specific capability the application demonstrably needs. Add a no-new-privileges security option so an executable cannot gain additional privilege through set-user-ID or file capabilities. Test after each change; a startup failure is preferable to silently granting broad authority.

Never use privileged mode as a convenience

A privileged container receives a very broad set of host-related powers and can undermine the isolation you are trying to preserve. Remove --privileged and privileged: true from production definitions. If hardware access, packet capture or another exceptional function is required, document the exact device, capability and host path, then grant only that narrow access and monitor it.

Limit host mounts and protect the filesystem

Every bind mount is a deliberate bridge from the host into the container. Avoid mounting operating-system configuration, the Docker data directory, SSH material, host home directories or the Docker socket. A read-write mount can let a compromised process alter host files; a read-only mount still discloses whatever it contains.

Safer mount decisions

  • Prefer named volumes or application-specific directories over arbitrary host paths.
  • Use read-only mounts for configuration, certificates and code unless the process must write them.
  • Give each service its own data directory and ownership.
  • Do not mount a broad parent directory when a single file or subdirectory is sufficient.
  • Review mounts during every deployment change; an innocuous-looking compose override can add a sensitive path.

Where supported, make the container root filesystem read-only and provide writable temporary storage explicitly. This limits persistence after an application compromise and makes unexpected writes visible during testing.

Keep secrets out of images and source control

Deleting a secret in a later Dockerfile layer does not reliably remove it from earlier image layers. Do not place passwords, API keys, private keys or tokens in Dockerfiles, build arguments, copied configuration files or image history.

Use runtime injection

  1. Store secrets in Docker’s secret mechanism or an external secret manager designed for runtime delivery.
  2. Grant each service only the secrets it needs.
  3. Mount or expose the secret at runtime, not while producing a reusable image.
  4. Prevent secrets from appearing in logs, crash reports and diagnostic endpoints.
  5. Rotate credentials if a secret has entered an image, build cache, registry, source repository or support bundle.

Environment variables are convenient but can be exposed through process inspection, debugging output or accidental logging. Use a file-based secret interface when the application supports it, and restrict file permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep host security controls enabled

SELinux, AppArmor and seccomp add restrictions beyond ordinary Unix permissions. Keep the distribution’s profiles enabled unless a documented compatibility test proves a narrower change is necessary. Replacing a profile with an unconfined setting to make a container start removes an important layer of defense.

This warning is especially important with rootless Docker. Rootless mode relies on user namespaces, and host settings that disable or weaken confinement can expose more of the kernel to unprivileged processes. On Ubuntu, an apparmor=unconfined configuration removes protection that would otherwise limit this attack surface.

Restrict networking and container-to-container communication

Create networks around application roles rather than attaching every container to one flat network. A public reverse proxy may need to reach a web service, while a database should accept connections only from the application network. Remove unused published ports and bind administration interfaces to a private address.

Some daemon configurations can disable unrestricted inter-container communication. If you use that control, explicitly allow only the links your application requires and test service discovery, health checks and migrations. Network segmentation limits lateral movement; it does not replace authentication between services.

Is rootless Docker worth it?

Rootless mode runs the Docker daemon and containers as an unprivileged user instead of running the daemon as host root. Its main benefit is blast-radius reduction: if an attacker exploits the daemon or runtime, the resulting process starts with the unprivileged user’s rights rather than automatic host-root authority.

Question Standard root-run daemon Rootless mode
Daemon privilege The daemon normally has host-root authority. The daemon runs as a non-root user.
Impact of a daemon exploit Potentially direct host-root control. Initially limited to the unprivileged user’s rights, subject to kernel and host weaknesses.
Setuid and file-capability binaries May be present in the normal installation and runtime path. Avoided except for the newuidmap and newgidmap helpers required for user namespaces.
Kernel exposure Uses the host’s root-privileged interfaces. User namespaces expose privileged kernel interfaces to an unprivileged user; privilege-escalation bugs in that area have occurred.
Operational maturity Long-established deployment model. An academic analysis described rootless mode as experimental in Docker 19.03 and fully supported from Docker 20.10; verify compatibility with the exact current release and workload.
Compatibility Broadest support for networking, storage and hardware integrations. Some integrations, low ports, storage drivers and host-level features may require changes or may not work.

Choose rootless when its boundary matches the workload

Rootless is attractive for multi-tenant development hosts, CI workers and services that do not need host-level administration. It is less attractive when the workload requires privileged networking, direct device access, unusual storage drivers or a daemon managed centrally by root. In those cases, rootless may still be possible for selected services, but test the complete deployment rather than assuming feature parity.

Deploy and verify rootless deliberately

  1. Create a dedicated unprivileged account for the Docker workload; do not reuse a human administrator’s account.
  2. Install the rootless prerequisites supplied by your Linux distribution and Docker release.
  3. Run the rootless setup tool for that account and enable the resulting per-user service.
  4. Log in as the service user and run docker info. Confirm that the server reports rootless operation and that the data directory is not the system-wide root-owned directory.
  5. Start a representative application, including its volumes, networks, health checks and restart behavior.
  6. Test reboots, updates, backups and log collection. Verify that no deployment step silently falls back to a root-run daemon.

Rootless is not a complete defense. User namespaces enlarge the kernel attack surface, and weak host hardening can reduce their benefit. Keep the kernel, engine, profiles and firewall maintained even after switching modes.

A practical deployment gate for every release

  1. Source: approve the registry, image digest and Dockerfile changes.
  2. Build: build with a minimal final stage, scan dependencies and ensure no secrets enter layers or cache.
  3. Identity: confirm a non-root UID, dropped capabilities and no-new-privileges behavior.
  4. Filesystem: review every mount, make code and configuration read-only where possible, and restrict writable paths.
  5. Network: publish only required ports and attach the service only to required networks.
  6. Runtime: keep SELinux, AppArmor and seccomp controls active; reject privileged mode unless an exception is approved.
  7. Operations: define backups, log handling, secret rotation, patch windows and an emergency rollback.
  8. Verification: inspect the running container, not just the source compose file. Deployment overrides and host-level defaults can change the effective security settings.

What to do when a hardening change breaks a container

The application fails after switching to a non-root user

Inspect the first failing write or bind operation, then change ownership of only that directory or configure the application to use an appropriate path. Do not restore root for the entire process as a first response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service needs a capability

Identify the exact operation that fails, add the smallest capability that permits it, and retest with all other capabilities dropped. Record the exception and its removal condition.

Networking stops working in a restricted setup

List the required service-to-service connections, confirm that each service is on the intended network and remove accidental dependencies on broad broadcast or host networking. Do not solve an application-networking bug by exposing the Docker API.

Rootless mode cannot start or persist across reboot

Check the per-user service, subordinate user and group mappings, storage location and kernel support. Verify operation as the dedicated account after a clean login and reboot; a test performed as root does not validate rootless operation.

How to audit an existing VPS

Start with the highest-consequence findings: network-reachable Docker APIs, privileged containers, Docker-socket mounts, sensitive host bind mounts and stale host or engine versions. Next inspect image provenance, runtime users, capabilities, profiles, secrets and network segmentation. Keep an inventory showing which finding belongs to the host, daemon, image or application team, with an owner and a due date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the audit after major engine, kernel, base-image or orchestration changes. Security settings are effective only when they remain true in the final running configuration.
